Common sense tells you something is up

Regarding "Holes in Horn's story raise doubts," May 9: Bill Horn's version of meeting with a developer (Cricket) is wrong. Just plain common sense tells you that it was not appropriate.

When will the public get wise and impeach him, or at least not vote for him again?

Flat-earthers taking on water

The HMS Flat Earth has been taking on water for quite some time now but, after ramming the iceberg of reality, almost every rat on board has gone over the rail –– even Newt Gingrich.

Darrell Beck still has two hands on the wheel, however. While the rest of the crew is scrambling for the life boats, Capt. Darrell is now trying to promote climate change into a "pagan religion" (Letters, May 12). There is a difference between religion and science, however. The causal relationship between greenhouse gases and global warming is based on science. The need to deny unpleasant aspects of reality and replace it with a paranoid fantasy is more like a religion.

We all wish that global warming wasn't real. Most of us, however, have the intellectual honesty to face up to reality and take appropriate action, especially when the consequences of inaction could be so devastating. It seems that no matter how obvious the threat, there will always be a fanatical rear guard of "bitter enders" whistling past the graveyard on their way to the rubbish bin of history. Bon voyage.

A human rights activist

I am responding to a letter written by Norma Parker in which she refers to Tina Jillings as an "illegal immigrant activist" (Letters, May 9). I want to set the record straight.

I know Tina Jillings very well and I admire her diligence, passion and tenacity. She just never gives up on her quest for human rights, civil rights and constitutional rights for all people. She is a human rights activist. She will stand up against anyone who abuses the rights of others.

Currently, I know that she is fighting for the rights of a woman who is a deaf-mute. This woman is a Caucasian living in a skilled nursing facility. She is not being treated with dignity, and her rights are being violated. Tina is doing everything she can to protect this woman and her rights.

If any of you think that just because Tina is a Latina that she is only concerned with Latino issues, you are wrong! She is a wonderful person who cares about her community more than anyone I have ever met. So if you are going to write things about her, please be sure you know what you are talking about and stop spreading lies.

Wood has performed well as mayor

Letter writer Marilyn Prado (Letters, May 10) gave some good reasons why Oceanside Mayor Jim Wood deserves to be re-elected. It should also be noted, to his credit, that he has demonstrated a concern for our environment. He recognized the proposed San Onofre toll road as an environmental issue that threatens the local Trestles recreation area. Wood showed leadership when he opposed the Robertson cement plant project location and had the wisdom to see it as a very bad planning decision. He opposed a development by the lagoon that many with expertise felt threatened wildlife.

Candidate Rocky Chavez was on the opposite side on all of these issues. Councilman Jack Feller ran hard for many months as a mayoral candidate before he suddenly ... abandoned his effort. Rather than let Wood have the luxury of running unopposed, up pops Councilman Chavez as a choice. Fairly or unfairly, it has given his candidacy the aura of being the result of political maneuvering by Wood's adversaries.

Regardless, the bottom line is that Wood has performed well and we voters should see that he keeps his job as mayor.

Redistribution of wealth

So today I listened to Barack Obama tell Wolf Blitzer when he is president he will attack the income of CEOs and others he feels are overpaid in an effort to redistribute the wealth as he sees fit, "making it fair#" for all Americans! Question: Does Mr. Obama think he will be representing the United States of America, or does he plan to turn us into the new U.S.S.R.?

Here is a fact for him to consider: What we make in income is not his business or concern, nor should it be! When it becomes government's business to determine and micromanage who makes how much and what they do with it, we have moved to another era in the history of American economic development, one that is very unfamiliar to a past model responsible for producing the greatest and most prosperous country known to man.

What he fails to recognize is that a prosperous life is, in most cases, our own choice and comes at great individual sacrifice in preparation, work and investment. The great thing about America is that we all have opportunities to better ourselves given the will, ingenuity and courage. Mr. Obama's statements are not only divisive but should send waves of fear through those of us who love the freedoms and opportunities of our country and system, one that has set the stage for incredible prosperity and accomplishment, both individually and collectively.

His memory is not so short

In his letter of May 12, Eric Parish mentions land stolen by Israel in 1948 and 1967. Does he think our memories are so short that we have no concept of history at all? In 1948, the state of Israel was created by the United Nations, which defined the boundaries. If Mr. Parish has a complaint, it should concern the U.N.

In 1967, Israel was attacked by Egypt, Jordan and Syria, whose goal was to destroy the nation of Israel. In defending itself, Israel pushed the attacking enemies out of the Golan Heights and Sinai Peninsula. As a result, 19 years of recurrent shelling by Syria from the Golan Heights was stopped and Israel was again able to use the previously blockaded Straights of Tiran. Except for the constant attacks by its Arab neighbors, Israel would have had no reason to occupy those lands.

Public transit is supposed to be a public service

Thanks to Mr. Conaughton for covering the North County Transit District board meeting ("Riders plead for continued service," May 13). One group that was not mentioned were students who depend on the local buses to get to school, elementary and high school. Some parents are not able to drive and must convey their young learners to school by bus. Many high school students depend on the bus to get to school. What are these people supposed to do? Isn't this supposed to be a public service?

I also like Mr. Crissman's suggestions in the Community Forum article ("NCTD budget can be balanced," May 12). Where is the budget meeting on Thursday being held? I would like to attend.

Government builds our roads

Chuck Milne (Letters, May 7) chastises government for taxing the sale of gasoline: He states that the federal portion of the tax on gasoline is "pure profit for the feds. They don't take any risk, but get all the reward." It has been federal, state and local government that has built the roads and highways on which we drive our gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles.

After World War II, the federal government, in cooperation with the states, planned and built the Interstate Highway System. This system (locally, Interstates 5, 8 and 15) was designed to interconnect the nation for commercial and noncommercial vehicles.

Now the government needs to design and build a high-speed rail (or mag-lev) network. Regionally, Southern California needs to be connected to Northern California and to southern Nevada and southern Arizona. Why are so many San Diegans anti-tax and anti-government? Government is the economic lifeblood of this county, or do you think that aircraft carriers docked at North Island, with their crews of 5,000 to 6,000 sailors, are funded by the Bush family fortune? Sea World would not exist if the federal government had not dredged out and created islands in what is now Mission Bay Park.

A bit of satire

Now that the city is finally building a bridge across the Oceanside Harbor/Pacific Street entrance, I'm not seeing my captivating friend as often. However, today I missed seeing him enough to take the long way around to the 800 block of North Pacific Street. He's gone! When I make my daily trip to the harbor, I'm accustomed to seeing him in the same place –– the second-story porch on the east side of the street. Usually he's facing the ocean, but never looks my way when I wave to capture his attention. He's a good-looking young man and dresses to suit the weather. Clothing might consist of a fancy T-shirt, colorful shorts or bathing suit, or denims and jacket –– each outfit complemented by a hat and sunglasses. On the days he's inside the house, I'm so disappointed, but suppose he has a right to occasionally take a nap or watch a favorite TV program.

I'm sure he'll be back leaning on the railing –– perhaps tomorrow. I appreciate his diligence acting as our beach and harbor greeter. All in all, it will be a significant plus to have a completed bridge crossing from Pacific Street to the harbor.

Something to complain about

I agree 100 percent with Doris Martin (Letters, May 2). If that guy (Bob Sheard, Letters, April 28) couldn't gripe and complain and wake up with phony claims about how and why the little Oceanside airport is a catastrophe just waiting to happen, he couldn't write a letter. If I was that worried about the dangers lurking there, I wouldn't buy there in the first place, and I sure as heck wouldn't continue to live near that perilous area. Hopefully, Bob won't move near the railroad, or goodbye Amtrak.

Is there a secret bonus that all of these little old ladies get for leaving their shopping carts in the middle of a parking space? I know that these antique rent-a-cops who burn up all of our expensive gas can write a ticket for illegal parking in a handicapped spot. How about writing tickets to all these inconsiderate slobs who are too good to put the carts where they belong?

Chris wrote on May 14, 2008 9:26 PM:The letter by Robert Matthews is just more ignorance about Israel. Under the British mandate the British did everything they could to facilitate the Zionist to set up their state whereas they wouldn't allow the Palestinians to do the same. So finally the zionist had so much strength militarily and politically that the UN partitioned Palestine and gave the Zionist 56% of the land and the Palestinians 43%. During the so-called war in 1948 the zionist took more land so they ended up with 78% of the land that used to belong to the Palestinians. The point is that the Zionist had no right to set up their state in a land that belonged to the Palestinians and was promised to them by the British. As I said before the 1967 war was started by Israel. Matthews talks about the UN. The UN pased a resolution 242 that said Israel needs to vacate the land it occupied in the 67 war but of course they didn't. So where is all this crying from Matthews about Israel violating international law and UN resolutions. Well we know the answer to that don't we.

sdraoul wrote on May 14, 2008 11:24 PM:Amazing how many intellectual sociopaths there are in North County where the best educated and most wealth in the area live.

On the one hand, there is whining and crying about how many illegals there are. Then, how much ID theft they do by using false and borrowed Social Security. Then they whine when I report what Social Security says mostly illegally-working people have paid into SS Trust Funds over the YEARS. It accumulates because illegals can’t collect benefits.

Social Security says there have been $400 Billion paid in by people with “bad” Social Security numbers; we all know that illegals aren't entitled to Social Security cards, thus, do the math.

Then these geniuses say it’s impossible for illegals to pay that much in because they all make minimum wage. Wrong! Most make far more than that. The raids in Iowa showed us that most illegals busted there were making more than $12 and hour -- which in Iowa is good money.

These very same people without a scintilla of evidence claim there are 20 million illegals here and that they came across an unguarded border illegally.

Baloney! Both are urban lies.

12-13 million max. Over half came in legally.

To think that such ignorance runs rampant among so many people.

Since there is no legal way to "borrow" someone's Social Security Number, the proper word would be "stolen" or maybe "usurped" or maybe "illegally used", but definately not the word "borrowed". That was and continues to be their goal. The unrest in the Middle East is because of the Arab worlds inability to acknowledge Israel's right to exist. Israel is not as big as New Jersey and a speck in the in the whole Mid East. It's not about land. It's about hubris. 1. John Edwards, first choice of white, southern, uneducated, blue-collar working people, salutes Hillary Clinton but enthusiastically endorses Barack Obama as the best choice. This gives Obama a few new probably delegates plus instant street cred with a demographic that has been difficult for him when competing against another populist Democrat (not a Republican).
2. In a special election for a Congressional district of mostly white, southern, uneducated, blue-collar working people in Mississippi, the Republicans (who had held the seat for many years) ran a campaign aggressively linking the conservative Democratic candidate to Barack Obama and Rev. Wright. Despite their long time hold on the district (which Bush carried by more than 20 points in 2004), the tactic backfired and the Democrat won in a landslide. This was the third such "safe" Republican long-held district that the Democrats flipped from the GOP in just a matter of weeks in special elections.

While Hillary may have been the first choice among white, southern, uneducated, blue-collar working people (at least before the Edwards endorsement), there is no evidence that they will vote against Obama when the choice is a third Bush term instead of another populist Democrat. There is plenty of concern, however, that many of the independents or new voters attracted by Obama, would either vote for McCain or not at all if Hillary were to miraculously pull a white rabbit out of a hat, because of her enormous negative ratings among these demographics.

I'm not sure what it means to be "agenized" but the idea of some kind of hidden agenda does not compute. We're worried about the devastating consequences of climate change, that's all. What possible hidden agenda could there be?

Obviously people who have financial ties to gross polluters DO have an agenda for delaying, denying, and obfuscating the reality of global warming. If you're looking for agendas, they're not even hidden, they're right out in the open. The oil industry makes a ton of money, and cutting down on their pollution would also cut into their profits. They don't want to do that. They can afford to buy a lot of obfuscation, and that's what they do.

It's just like the tobacco companies denying that smoking causes cancer. Money in the bank.

Ethanol and compact fluorescents are not the answer, but at least they're tiny, fumbling, tentative first steps. There isn't an "answer", but there are lots of possible answers. In the late 1970s, about 45 percent of the meatpacking industry was unionized. By the late 1980s, that had dropped to 21 percent as more immigrants took jobs in the industry, Mintert said."

No one is trying to shut down any debate about the science.
What we are pointing out is that there is no debate. There was a debate back in the 70's when climate change was first observed and the extreme fluctuations generated conflicting initial perceptions as to either global cooling or warming.
Scientific literature can include differing opinions, and sometimes studies produce conflicting results.
Since that time, on the issue of climate change, a consensus of consistent results has emerged from real, objective (non-oil company) studies.
The climate change deniers are not debating. They are just saying, "Ain't so, ain't so" with no reasons or no science to back them up. This is not a debate, it is a childish tantrum.
That is why they are compared to the Flat Earth Society, because they are functioning at the same level.

Instead of the Zionist comming in and working with the Palestinians, they wanted a Jewish state and didn't want to integrate with the Palestinians. Now you have here these so-called illegal aliens who come here and blend into society. They did not come and force me out of my home and drive me off into the desert. So, eagle deal with this.

DD Wiz wrote on May 15, 2008 3:11 PM:The post from "Backcountry" (1:21pm) makes reference to"that famous 'scientist' Albert Gore."
This is obviously a new participant here. I have mentioned many times that Al Gore is not a scientist, does not claim to be one, and his work is not accepted as peer-reviewed science.
Al Gore was trained as a journalist, and has been effective in communicating information about climate change, but he is a secondary derivative source, not a primary scientific source.
"Backcountry" challenges us to "make believers" out of the deniers by providing PROOF to support the conclusion of human contribution to climate change.
This, too, has been submitted many times and can be submitted again. I still have numerous primary scientific sources documenting both the science of measurable climate change and the empirical evidence of human contribution to it (in conjunction with and exacerbatio of other natural and cyclical forces).
I will be glad to post them again if "Backcountry" promises to honor his pledge to be made into a believer when presented with objective, documentary evidence.
In the meantime, you can check this out for yourselves by going to Google, select "Advanced" mode, scroll down to select the "Google Scholar" search to constrain the results to PEER-REVIEWED scientific sources, and find for yourselves the thousands of supporting studies, and the complete lack of dissenting studies.

The Marriage Protection Act would make that not a statute, but a Constitutional Amendment -- and, by definition a Constitutional Amendment cannot be unconstitutional.

When winter rolls around, we will have global cooling that will continue for three or four months. Mark my words! Write down today's high temperature (put it on the refrigerator, maybe) then do it again on November 15th. Based on the vast accumulation of evidence freely available to us all in peer-reviewed Auto Club guidebooks, I can predict with certainty that November 15th will be colder than today (wildfires notwithstanding).

Floyd wrote on May 15, 2008 5:56 PM:When bloggers say "Even though it is currently impossible to accurately predict the precise details of global warming, the basic processes and the broad outlines are very clear", they really mean "I've made up my mind, don't confuse me with the facts". That's not science, that's dogma.

If “they” had FICA confiscated from their pay check, “they” DESERVE “Social Security benefits” from whoever confiscated their earnings – but, only the amount that was confiscated, plus reasonable interest. AH! There’s the rub. What started as a popular – albeit, totalitarian – retirement scheme, is now nothing more than socialism with a fancy name. Get used to it. As someone said: “You ain’t seen nothin’ yet.”

gerold wrote on May 15, 2008 6:27 PM:Backcountry asks me to convince the global warming deniers about the reality of climate change.

I would love to do that, but seriously, it would take a few hours of explanation to give you all the background necessary to understand the relationship between the reflection/absorption of incoming solar radiation, re-radiation of heat to space from the surface of the earth, and the infra-red absorption/transmission characteristics of the atmosphere.

I'm not saying that to put you off or put you down. Seriously. There are plenty of resources easily availible to educate yourself if you really want to find out. Search for "greenhouse gas" and go to the wikipedia page. It's only about 6 pages long, but if you don't have a scientific background you will have to make an effort to understand.

It will take some work, but given the importance of the issue, it's well worth the effort.

Greenergy's statement is an example of global warming double-talk. Of course there is no debate. The global warming people can't debate when they can't provide evidence to support their theory. It's no wonder most common-sense people recognize that the global warming theory is a fraud based on smoke and mirrors. And until the GW people show PROOF to support their claims, there will be plenty of "deniers" who understand that the global warming scam is all about polititics, power and control.
