Oceanside Elks to hold bingo

Health and Fitness Day for seniors

OCEANSIDE ---- The Mottino Family YMCA and the city of Oceanside will sponsor the third annual Healthy Happy Hour Senior Health and Fitness Day at 4:30 p.m. May 22 at 4701 Mesa Drive. Oceanview Cemetery cleanup set

OCEANSIDE ---- Volunteers are needed for the semi-annual cleanup of Oceanview Cemetery to take place from 10 a.m. to noon May 24 in time for Memorial Day. Cleanup includes but is not limited to weeding, picking up trash, uncovering headstones, weedwacking along the fence lines. Bring rakes, hoes, gloves, gas-powered weed-wackers and gardening tools. Fundraiser benefits wounded military

OCEANSIDE ---- The Oceanside Republican Women Federated and the Wounded Warrior Project will host a Great Gatsby Party and Croquet Tournament from 3 to 8:30 p.m. May 31 at the El Camino Country Club, 3202 Vista Way. Proceeds go to help returning troops suffering from traumatic brain injuries. Tickets cost $60 per person. Sponsorships are needed. Call (760) 583-3579.

Volunteer to drive a senior

OCEANSIDE ---- The Oceanside Senior Center is seeking volunteer drivers for a new transportation service helping senior ages 65 and older. Volunteers ages 18 and older will be reimbursed for up to 150 miles or $75 per month to drive their own vehicle and assist seniors on the outing. Drivers will be required to participate in the city's volunteer process inclusive of fingerprinting and background checks, provide a DMV printout, participate in training exercises and provide proof of vehicle insurance meeting the state requirements.

The senior center is developing a list of qualified drivers prior to launching the program. Call (760) 435-5250.

Russian men's ensemble to perform

OCEANSIDE ---- The St. Petersburg Men's Ensemble from Russia will present a concert at 4 p.m. May 24 at First Presbyterian Church, 2001 El Camino Real. The ensemble performs a variety of music from sacred music and ancient Russian chants and folk songs to modern compositions and transpositions of popular melodies. Free-will donation accepted. Annual All-Class Reunion set

OCEANSIDE ---- The annual All-Class Reunion of Oceanside and Oceanside-Carlsbad Union high schools will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 8 at Heritage Park Village, 220 Peyri Road, behind Mission San Luis Rey. Set-up for various classes will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 7. A $1 per person donation is requested. Carlsbad Garden Club names new officers

CARLSBAD ---- The Carlsbad Garden Club, currently celebrating its 75th anniversary, recently installed a new slate of officers. They include: Jeanette Sweringen, treasurer; Barbara Manzano, vice president; Ellen McGrath-Thorpe, president; and Barbara Diamond, secretary.

Photo exhibition set

CARLSBAD ---- "A Day in the Life of Carlsbad and Karlovy Vary" is the result of competitions in which teens in Carlsbad and sister city Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic submitted photos based on "A Day in the Life of" their hometowns. Award-winning photographs will be exhibited at the Cole Library, 1250 Carlsbad Village Drive from May 19 through 30 . All submitted photos will be on exhibition at the Carlsbad Oceanside Art League Gallery in the Village Faire, 300 Carlsbad Village Drive, Suite 101, from June 4 to July 6. The exhibit was show in Karlovy Vary during the celebration of the city's 650th anniversary in April and May.

Diet planning for seniors

Carlsbad Newcomers to meet June 4

Peggy Sprague will discuss the art created by children (and adults) from third world countries using chocolate, coffee, wine and lipstick, rather than paint which is unavailable.

Camp H.O.P.E. deadline approaching

CARLSBAD ---- Hospice of the North Coast’s Hope Bereavement Center will hold its 11th annual Camp H.O.P.E. June 6 to 8 at Green Oak Ranch in Vista. Applications are being accepted through May 16. Camp H.O.P.E. is a weekend retreat for children (ages 7 and older) and their families that have recently experienced the death of a parent, child or other relative or close friend. The camp offers a special combination of fun recreational activities and supportive therapeutic art or sharing activities to assist participants to build trust, and develop good coping skills as well as to build friendships with people who have had similar experiences. Cost is $35 for the reservation fee. All other costs are covered by donations and grants by various community organizations.

Museum to host skateboarding exhibit

ENCINITAS ---- The San Dieguito Heritage Museum will host the opening of its new exhibit, "Skate and Create: A History of Skateboarding in San Dieguito," from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 31 at the museum, 450 Quail Gardens Drive. The multimedia, interactive display will describe the region's significant contributions to the international sport of skateboarding. The Crosby to host charity tournament

RANCHO SANTA FE ---- The Guardians of San Diego will host its 17th annual charity golf and tennis tournament beginning at 9 a.m. June 3 at The Crosby at Rancho Santa Fe, 17525 Rancho del Rio. Youngest 'Schindler's List' survivor to tell his story

RANCHO SANTA FE ---- The Chabad Jewish Center of Rancho Santa Fe will host Leon Leyson, the youngest survivor known to have been saved by Oskar Schindler, who will speak at 7 p.m. June 3 at a private residence. Leyson, 78, will discuss "Saved by an Angel." The story of Oskar Schindler was told in 1993 in Steven Spielberg's Academy award-winning film "Schindler's List." Schindler, the owner of an enamelware factory in Poland, saved Jews from the death camps by convincing Nazi officials he needed laborers to work in his factory. Reserve by May 27. Environmental film festival set

ENCINITAS ---- The Downtown Encinitas MainStreet Association will host Patagonia's Wild & Scenic Film Tour as part of The Cottonwood Creek Environmental Film Festival on June 6 through 8 (in conjunction with Encinitas Environment Day on June 8) at various venues in downtown Encinitas. The festival will include a Very Important Planet Party, an all-day screening of environmental films; a competition for local films; and a sunset film screening hosted by the Surfrider Foundation. Venues include La Paloma Theatre, Chapel of Spiritual Awareness and the Encinitas Library. Cost is $5 per film segment or $20 all day, which includes entry to the VIP party.
