OCEANSIDE: MiraCosta hunting for interim, then permanent leader
Interim president John Hendrickson taking job in Northern California

OCEANSIDE ---- The MiraCosta College board is looking for someone to keep the district's top administrative seat warm until a permanent superintendent-president is found.
And it doesn't have the luxury of time.
MiraCosta's current interim leader, John Hendrickson, recently announced that he has accepted a job as chancellor of the West Valley-Mission Community College District in Northern California.
He will leave MiraCosta at the end of the month.
Anyone interested in replacing him on an interim basis must apply by Friday, June 6, said Human Resources Director Sheri Wright. Candidates will be screened by a three-member board sub-committee, as well as a committee made up of faculty, staff and student representatives.
The board will interview the finalists June 13. And whoever is selected will serve from July 1 until Dec. 31, or until a permanent president-superintendent is hired.
"It's a very quick timeline," spokeswoman Bonnie Hall said Friday.
The interim superintendent won't be eligible for the permanent job, Wright said.
Hendrickson, who makes roughly $217,000 a year at MiraCosta, moved into the leadership post last summer after President Victoria Munoz Richart resigned with a settlement package of cash and benefits valued at $1.6 million. Though he had served a brief stint as the district's interim vice president for business and administrative services in 2006, Hendrickson wasn't in MiraCosta's employ when he took the top job.
He will make $240,000 a year at the West Valley-Mission Community College District.
At MiraCosta, Hendrickson chaired the search for a permanent president-superintendent, but the board scrapped that effort in April after the search committee ---- a mix of faculty, staff leaders and some members of the public ---- forwarded just two applicants for consideration.
Now, the board is poised to start over.
Last month, it set a goal of January 2009 to fill the top spot. And at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, it will host a "structured dialogue" with staff, students and community members to discuss how the search should proceed.
No action will be taken during that meeting, Hall said.
Instead, each board member will participate in a discussion about topics such as the composition of the committee that will screen candidates for board consideration, and whether to hire a search firm to assist in the process.

you would think that the faculty be made to do all the work for selecting a president given that they are explicitly responsible for chasing former president
Richart out!
jvc wrote on Jun 1, 2008 9:46 PM:It is very simple. Keep the board out of it until the very last vote is required. They have mucked up every selection they have made. With the college on probation and quality staff leaving in droves, it is no wonder they cannot find a suitable replacement. And to all the other false jvc's about to blog here, stop it. Unless you too intend to fully support the faculty and other college professionals. Enough wingnut drivel.

Hendrickson and his salary of $ 115.38

No future president at MCC should make more than $100,000 per year, $40.08 per hour, the same as
the faculty..... the bonus for the president would be the prestige factor!

Why is the NCT allowing this fraud?
Floyd wrote on Jun 2, 2008 12:25 PM:Based on the performance of the administrative staff (and the Board) at Mira Costa (pronounced "cost-ah", not "coast-ah") College, there would be significant improvement if they were all replaced with graduating MCC students.

Let the state take over the college since they can't get along, and see if the taxpayers' money can't be better spent. Hendrickson doesn't even answer the public's requests - he just kisses the boards' patoot.

Homework wrote on Jun 2, 2008 5:58 PM:This time a full background check is in order so unlike the last permanent incumbent (Richart), we don't discover until after hired that there was a track record of abysmal failure at all previously held jobs and even an investigation of alleged misuse of a state-issued credit card while at Cascadia College! Please don't retain MCC's "attorneys" or Inspector Clouseau to do the background check.

MiraCosta College serves our community well. We should be proud of our community college, even as it undergoes current troubles. The most current Accreditation Report shows that one of the most pressing problems at MiraCosta is caused by a Board unable to function in concert with staff and faculty. We at CEE are concerned about this problem, but we this believe that it is not insurmountable and that the citizens of the MiraCosta District who desire a quality education for our students will ensure that the balance is restored. It is important to recognize that the faculty, staff, and administrators at MiraCosta College have the interests of the students and excellence in education at heart. No rational citizen disputes this, though there are some bloggers who seem to hate teachers and other employees of the MiraCosta District. Citizens for Excellence in Education know that it is the faculty who deliver our excellent education, and the staff and administrators whose excellent service ensures that support is provided in this enterprise. All citizens who favor excellence in education support faculty, staff, and administrators at MiraCosta College.

Is the CEE the former MCC faculty PAC that has now gone underground with their schemes to
undermine the public trust for the MCC
board and scheming to undermine the future voting process of board members?
