ESCONDIDO: Beverages & More coming to town
Some hail store as new amenity, others raise questions

ESCONDIDO ---- Beverages & More is slated to open its first Escondido store on July 18, providing local residents with a liquor store that advertises low prices and a wide range of beer and wine selections.
But City Councilman Sam Abed said Escondido already has too many liquor stores, and the manager of the city's largest liquor store said he was disappointed that his longtime local landmark will now have to compete against a corporate chain.
Beverages & More will take over the former site of Tweeter, just west of Interstate 15 in the Staples/Sports Authority plaza. The new store will fill an inland North County void for the chain, which has stores in Carmel Mountain Ranch, Oceanside, Temecula, Encinitas and Solana Beach.
The 10,000-square-foot store will be among the largest liquor stores in the city. Holiday Wine Cellar has operated a 12,000-square-foot store at Mission Avenue and Escondido Boulevard since 1965. A Liquor Barn on East Valley Parkway closed in late 2007.
Jaime Rueda, a Beverages & More employee who will manage the new store, said Monday that the location was chosen based on high volume of traffic in the area and the presence of so-called "big box" retailers. In addition to Staples and Sports Authority, a Target and a Mervyn's are nearby.
Rueda said the new store will employ 15 to 20 people and be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week.
Jim Crone, who handles many commercial leases in the city, said Monday that the company also looked at a site in the Signature Plaza in downtown Escondido and two sites just east of Interstate 15: the former Good Guys site north of Valley Parkway and the former Barnes & Noble site on the south side of Valley.
Crone is not the leasing agent for the site chosen by Beverages & More.
City Councilman Dick Daniels said Monday that the store will keep more residents shopping within Escondido, which means more sales tax revenue to cover park maintenance and the salaries of police officers and firefighters.
"Beverages & More stores are popular wherever they open," said Daniels. "I've had several people ask me over the last couple of years why we don't have one."
Harvey Mitchell, chief executive of the Escondido Chamber of Commerce, said the store will be popular because of selection and prices.
"I imagine they will be very busy right from the start," said Mitchell. "People like to get things for close to wholesale price."
But City Councilman Sam Abed said the 117 stores already selling liquor in Escondido are more than enough.
Daniels disagreed, contending that Beverages & More will be located several miles west of where the city suffers from an oversaturation of liquor stores on East Valley Parkway. He also said the new store will be far different from a typical corner liquor store.
James Howell, manager of Holiday Wine Cellar, conceded that Beverages & More offers many more products than a typical liquor store. But he said Holiday also has an extensive selection.
Hesaid he was disappointed to hear that Beverages & More was coming to Escondido.
"It kind of takes away from those who have been in town for many years," said Howell, explaining that his store has been open for 43 years. "But I'm sure it will be a fun competition."

Since When wrote on Jun 2, 2008 4:30 PM:Notice how quick Councilman Abed is to cite "numbers/statistics"...when it suits his argument...he's "all over" the "FACTS". Some time throughout the years, it seems Councilman Abed has annointed himself "King" and "All Knowing" and "All Gifted"...whatever he THINKS he BELIEVES...you can't negotiate with that type of individual. We can just VOTE him OUT!!!

Marie-Anne wrote on Jun 2, 2008 4:50 PM:Holiday Wine Cellar is and always has been a special gem in Escondido. Where else can the common man actually hold a $2K bottle of Rothschild's in his own hand?
That said, Bev Mo is an upstanding store, and shouldn't be compared to the ubiquitous corner liquor stores festooned throughout Escondido. Sam, you know I support you, but that was a benighted statement at best.
AboutTime wrote on Jun 2, 2008 4:57 PM:That's going to be nice. There's a difference between the person that picks up a flask of Thunderbird wine and the guy that picks up an Australian chardonnay. BevMo caters to the latter. And while it's great to have Holiday Wine Cellar, I'm sure there's room for another store, given a city of 140,000 people.
Looking at it closely wrote on Jun 2, 2008 5:29 PM:Having a clean, well-run discount beverage outlet with low prices may well hurt the the seedier stores that concern some of our city leaders. It could even cause them to shut their doors. If liquor is still a legal commodity, then at least it should be sold in a clean and safe place. The already existing "mom and pop" liquor stores around town don't fit that description and are things we can do without.
escondido resident wrote on Jun 2, 2008 6:05 PM:there are to many liquor stores in Escondido, to MANY bad, crime filled, shady liquor stores in the east valley parkway area of escondido! the city keeps approving more liquor stores in low income areas of the town! the only reason Sam is upset about Bev Mo coming in is that it could take away from his stores profits! he had no problem approving more liquor stores in the East Valley Parkway area last year!
Keep them coming... wrote on Jun 2, 2008 7:29 PM:Established chains will only help this fledging city if they are willing to set up shop here. Keep the sales tax dollars in Escondido! Now for some more larger restaurants...
Karl wrote on Jun 2, 2008 8:12 PM:"I wonder" "since when", which one of you is running for a council seat? It's a cheap shot to slam an existing council member on these blogs without providing facts, isn't it? What's your beef with Sam? Please provide exact examples of how you or your candidate of choice will preform better. Oh, cat got your tongue? Thought so, it's really easy to be a cheap shot artist. It's much more difficult to run and serve with your nads hanging out everyday. Come on out of the closet, who do you support for City Council and why?

Tired wrote on Jun 3, 2008 2:08 AM:I'm really tired about hearing people complain about Escondido, if this city is such a dump then why do we have so many big investments here. Obviously there is potential in this city.
JJ wrote on Jun 3, 2008 7:31 AM:Sweet! Special order beer is now in my own backyard.
To Karl wrote on Jun 3, 2008 7:55 AM:Like the others have said, Sam sells alcohol at his gas station. There may be nothing to that but coming out against Beverages and More reeks of impropriety. Sam is working hard to get a Walmart on East Valley Parkway just a stones throw from his station. Look at what the City is trying to do in the Mercado area, again where he owns property. I can't read the guy's mind and know his intentions but I do know how this would look to anyone on the outside looking in.
Bobby wrote on Jun 3, 2008 8:50 AM:I went to a Bev Mo once in Oceanside, cause my frineds said it was cool, and cheap... It is, if you want the sam etypes and prices of beers at your local rite aid... Holiday Wine Cellar is good because they have the unique selection... I can say I will never shop at the Bev mo
DMan wrote on Jun 3, 2008 8:56 AM:BevMo is not a "liquor store". Yet another misleading line from the NC Times (not uncommon). BevMo is an upscale seller of in-demand wines and cocktail beverages.
This is not another "Corner Liquor", "7/11" or "El Los Primeros De Cervezas y Carne y Ropa y Mas Cervezas y Mas Ropa".
This is a good addition to our city. Look at the other communities that are home to BevMo outlets:
Rancho Bernardo, Encinitas, Temecula, etc. I'm originally from L.A., and BevMo stores are only found in very upscale communities.
Just to set the record straight...
Cmon Sam wrote on Jun 3, 2008 9:02 AM:Maybe, just maybe BevMo can put some of these 117 stores out of business. As far as the Holiday Wine Cellar goes, competition is good. WELCOME BEVMO!!
Bring it On wrote on Jun 3, 2008 9:37 AM:Sorry Jaime but I've been a resident of Esc for 20 years and never heard of your store. Nor have I ever shopped at the other 117 liquor stores in town. I prefer Costco and Bev & Mo. I shop at the Bev & Mo store in Carmel Mountain since it's close to my work but am now looking forward to this one opening. There are different strokes for different folks and that's why there needs to be different liquor stores as well.
bodecea wrote on Jun 3, 2008 9:56 AM:I look forward to Bev Mo coming to Escondido. I like their large choice of Scotch and beer. Tho I will still go to Holiday too.
bryan wrote on Jun 3, 2008 1:48 PM:Great job city council keep bringing in the up scale retailers and big box stores and no more 99cent stores.
WELCOME BevMO wrote on Jun 3, 2008 4:27 PM:I bet alot of these people are not happy because they charge HIGH prices for their alcohol. Now they will have to compete.
Observer wrote on Jun 3, 2008 6:07 PM:Well, well. 9 posts validated by NCT staff since I submitted at 6:30 a.m., 3 June (today). Mine pointed out that Del Dios Middle School is directly across the street from the BevMo location, and hoped that the increased traffic, on top of that of Valley Pkwy and Auto Pkwy (14 lanes total) doesn't endanger those 10-13 year olds.
To Sam Abed wrote on Jun 3, 2008 6:15 PM:You are complaining about competition coming to town. I would be safe to assume you you have no problems with Wal-mart coming to town. Why? They do not sell liquor. Isn't that being a hypocrite?
To Karl wrote on Jun 3, 2008 9:18 PM:Your language is rude...can't even process your message...because you have stooped to some kind of new low level. I can't believe that NCT posted that blog. We all know what your "slang" term means...and it is rude!!! I wonder if Sam Abed would appreciate knowing what you think

cause our buses go there.
dude wrote on Jun 4, 2008 6:26 AM:To bring it on: Your saying you've never seen the store with the huge, red sign that says "Liquor" you can see it from both freeways...you can probably even see it from carmel mt.
The Big B wrote on Jun 4, 2008 10:57 AM:I used to live in north RB, and I was there 2 years before I heard of the Holiday Wine Cellar (via Internet chatter). They need to advertise better.
Though there is definitely overlap between Holiday and BevMo, I found them to be more "companion" than anything else. Holiday carries quite a few items that BevMo does not stock, so they should exploit that niche.
Phil wrote on Jun 5, 2008 9:41 PM:This is a win-win. We save gas by not having to drive to Carmel Mountain anymore and tax dollars stay in Escondido.
