Bilbray votes against our troops

It is perplexing how Rep. Brian Bilbray can repeatedly vote against any reasonable timeline to bring our brave men and women home from Iraq, then vote to deprive them of the benefits they deserve upon their return.

Recently, Bilbray voted against a new comprehensive GI Bill to provide our troops up-to-date college and training benefits, which would allow them to integrate back into the civilian world as productive members of society. Luckily, 256 members of Congress stood behind our soldiers and passed this desperately needed bill.

The GI Bill vote should have been a no-brainer. It is our obligation to provide this to our troops; they have earned every penny of it. Mr. Bilbray, don't tell us you support our troops. Your disgraceful vote is a direct blow to them. Your votes show nothing but a destructive pattern against our military.

Correcting his letter

Chris Pulse (Letters, May 20), in his defense of his like-minded William Dreu, Eric Parish, et al., in his opening sentence made the error of omitting the fact that the five Arab nations attacked his "whipping boy" Israel and, therefore, Israel had to defend itself. Please forgive me for correcting him. I wouldn't want him to look like one of those anti-Semites. ...

Ruling starts us on the road to polygamy

In celebrating the California Supreme Court decision, Eric Parish says he is not advocating polygamy (Letters, May 28). And 40 years ago, no one was advocating gay marriage, either. If the most basic, enduring aspect of marriage can be redefined by a few judges, then surely it is no great obstacle to legalize another type of marriage that has historical precedence in many societies.

Sympathetic stories in the news media about "polyamour" arrangements have already appeared, and there have been court cases. If we continue down this path, the same vague appeals to love, freedom and rights will be used to strike down laws banning polygamy as discriminatory against bisexuals. It may take a while, but the outcome is inevitable.

Finally working to secure our communities

The citizens of San Diego County have much to celebrate these days, thanks to grassroots groups calling for enforcement of our laws! Local police agencies are cracking down on violent gang members and criminal illegal aliens. ICE agents are now enforcing federal immigration laws against law-breaking employers and dangerous illegal alien fugitives.

Probably the biggest positive change over the past year or two is the full-time staffing of ICE agents in all our county jails to check the legal status of all persons arrested and to put a deportation hold on all illegal alien criminals. Thousands of criminals are now being deported each year locally instead of being turned back into our communities, where many of them were just committing more crimes.

Also, the long-awaited completion of a double fence across San Diego County begins in mid-June. It will take several years to complete, but Duncan Hunter's effective fence will eventually protect all of California from the flood of criminals, aliens and drugs we now have, especially in the East County. And we didn't have to give 20 million illegals amnesty to get this new security and safety! For the latest updates or to help secure our communities, visit www.SanDiegoMinutemen.com. Together, we are making a difference!

More facts, history on toll road

Regarding commentary by Paul O'Neal on the 241 toll road hearing ("Facts, history support approving toll road," May 25: Mr. O'Neal wrote about the "opponents who were bused in to fill the stands," but he failed to mention the large groups in bright shirts that were on buses provided by unions and the toll authority to carry signs and campaign in support of the road. Were they paid to be there? I talked to a couple and they didn't even know the location of San Onofre.

The author stated, "Elected officials and supporters were prevented from testifying ..." The truth is that elected officials (and their paid assistants) had more than two hours set aside exclusively for their testimony. When the chairman ended the discussion, there were only about four people in line to speak. In addition, a couple of hundred of those against the road gave up their time to move the discussion along –– none of the political people did this!

The author wrote that no campsites would close if the toll road were built. I would invite him to go to the San Mateo campground and set up camp a few feet from the freeway. Talk about the quality of life!

Is it now unacceptable to mention race?

Anne McDaniel (Letters, May 29) writes that her family was offended by a recent cartoon featuring two men of different races (her description) on a raft, with a shark saying "White meat or dark?" I didn't see the cartoon, but unless I'm missing something here, there was no imputation of good or bad to dark skin or light.

I'd like to understand her viewpoint, and would be grateful for her explanation as to why her family found the cartoon offensive. Our skins do come in many shades, and people come in all sorts of glorious mixtures. Has it become unacceptable to acknowledge that such differences exist?

Long live Lionel Van Deerlin

I was sad to hear of the passing of former congressmen Lionel Van Deerlin. He was a true inspiration to all ("Former congressman Van Deerlin dies," May 19). When he served in Congress in the House of Representatives for nearly 20 years, it was obvious he had a clear understanding of his responsibilities representing the people. It is tragic that many current members of Congress fail to understand their basic function.

Van Deerlin also generously shared his insight each week in his column for the San Diego Union. His accurate political analysis was refreshing compared with the many clueless "experts" giving their opinions in many papers.

It is hoped that the Oceanside school district may honor Lionel Van Deerlin as one of Oceanside High School's most important graduates (class of 1933). Van Deerlin's weekly column will be missed –– almost as much as his presence in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Save some words for the heterosexuals

I agree that, to be fair, people of the same sex should be able to have all the rights and benefits of conventional marriage. However, how are each of the unions called? Is one or both known as the wife or the husband? Which is the bride and which is the groom?

Most people would not object to a legal union, but please, don't use the words "marriage," "spouse," "husband" or "wife." It's just not right. Let's save those words for the heterosexual marriages.

Check McCain's record on helping vets

Sens. Graham and Lieberman wisely withdrew from the Vets for Freedom. However, Sen. McCain, whom both support, has let our vets down in Congress. McCain votes against the 21st century GI Bill, against an amendment providing $20 billion to the VA's medical facilities (May 4, 2006), against $430 million to the VA for outpatient care for vets (April 26, 2006), against increasing VA funding by $1.5 million by closing corporate loopholes (March 14, 2006), and against $1.8 billion VA funding by ending abusive tax loopholes (March 10, 2004).

His approach to individualized health care could close all VA benefits. Let's hope our veterans read the record before supporting McCain.

The hypocrisy of religion

It is with amazing audacity that 10 states in this country think they have the right to meddle in the affairs of California. It will be a sad day for California's Supreme Court if they decide that their rulings are less important than the 12th-century mindset of other state governments and courts.

Ever since this country was founded, segments of our population have had to be dragged, kicking and screaming, to recognize that there are people different from them who are living under the same Constitution.

It always boils down to the same old conundrum: the hypocrisy of religion. The Bible only has one function, and that is to make everyone who has different beliefs or lifestyles as evil and dangerous. That way they have an unfounded sense of superiority.

Europeans lived under the tyranny of religion for centuries, and learned their lesson. They now look on the U.S. as one of the most unenlightened countries in the free world. Just look at Iraq. That is enough to satisfy my argument.

Increase Coaster runs this summer

I would like to concur with Larry Lovin of Vista (Letters, May 31). I, too, have long been dismayed that Coaster service is extremely limited or completely unavailable on weekends. Between unpredictable traffic and parking issues, I am loath to try to plan any excursions farther south than Encinitas.

Now that high gas prices are also a factor, the option to take the Coaster to other desirable destinations, especially in and around San Diego, is even more attractive. Mass transit is great for weekday commuters; but in an area with so much year-round tourism, I just don't understand why increased weekend Coaster service couldn't be a profitable undertaking. Perhaps the summer could be used as a test period to promote Saturday and Sunday ridership and determine optimal schedules. Involving local businesses would also help to generate data on the impact of adding additional trains.

Larry Lovin's reasonably priced "weekend pass" suggestion was a great idea. I would buy one in a heartbeat, and I am sure that I wouldn't be alone!

Understanding the fight of legal and illegal

I have a very hard time trying to make sense of why illegals want to come to the United States and demand what they cannot get in their own country. They would get shot there, but the United States is so liberal, we do nothing to stop them from even being here! Then we turn around and give them everything free.

I have no problem with anyone who wants to be legally and work the same as we do and pay their own way. No one has given me anything unless I have worked for it and paid my way. I believe everyone has a right to better themselves, legally.

Unheralded veterans remembered

Though this Memorial Day dawned a bit cool and gray, upwards of a hundred folks showed up at the San Marcos cemetery for our own unheralded memorial service. With a 12-foot cross, beautifully decorated entirely with golden sunflowers by the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 3795 as a backdrop, we heard retired Brig. Gen. Larry Seaman, U.S. Marine Corps, and Linda Dudik, history professor at Palomar College, give short and eloquent speeches. Linda brought us through the years to the present day on burials, marking grave locations, identification of the deceased, etc. ...

Commander Virgil Griffin, VFW Post 3795, handled the reins for the ceremony, backed up by our new chaplain, Bob Kundinger. Good job, commander and padre. Luanne Hulsizer and her husband, Mike Preston, greeted the audience as well and elaborated on the status of our own San Marcos All Veterans Memorial. The audience contained a mixture of World War II veterans (few), the Korean War and Vietnam Wars, and perhaps a sprinkling of those from our present conflict.

Then we adjourned to the VFW Post to stock up on hamburgers, hot dogs and a variety of salads and tasty desserts. ... Many thanks to all who participated.

Democratic race doesn't get any better than this

God, does it get any better than this? [Hillary Clinton] is still flying high ... but just barely, trounced in Oregon by a young black junior senator from Chicago politics with no record of accomplishments. Hillary could blame the Oregon loss on the sub-culture of citizens who occupy that state, similar to Obama's loss in West Virginia when he blamed the loss of those who "cling to their guns and religion." How deflating and perplexing it must be to be beaten by a black man when, for years, the Clintons have had the blacks of America in their hip pocket. Even Bill was given the title of first black president. Does karma come to mind?

Three hundred million people in America, and these two are the best the Democrats can put forward? God save America from either of these.

Ex-presidents should shut the heck up

I'm writing this letter to please ask all the ex-presidents to shut the heck up when it comes to world politics. They had their chance when they were in office; now that they're out, they should stay out.

Ex-President Jimmy Carter is shooting off his mouth about Israel. He's mad because the treaty between Israel and Hamas he was working on didn't go through. Now he's stuck with revealing secrets about the two sides that he shouldn't be revealing. It borders on treason.

Remember the oil embargo, the giving away of Okinawa and the Panama Canal? That was Jimmy. If you want to put the blame on anyone for the gas prices we suffer today, look no further than Jimmy Carter. Remember, it was during his administration that we had gas lines, rationing gas, odd/even days to fill up and gas going over $1 for the first time in history.

I'm tired of ex-presidents trying to change their legacy after they leave office. He didn't do anything constructive while he was in office, what makes him think he can do it now when he's out of office?

Another high point for Massachusetts

If this was in the North County Times, I must have missed it. On May 29 at a Memorial Day ceremony in Winchendon, Mass., a military veteran gave two empty blank cases that had been used in the ceremony that day to a 10-year-old boy. The boy gave one to his grandfather and kept the other for himself. He took this empty piece of metal to his school and was going to show it to classmates.

While on a break, he was seen in the playground by a teacher, playing alone, not threatening anyone with it. Just holding it. The teacher confiscated it, he was taken to the office, and his mother was called to come and pick him up. He had been suspended for five days from school.

This boy's two grandfathers are veterans, and so is his father and uncle. Memorial Day is a big thing to him and his family, but now because of this, the school is threatening to assign a probation officer to him over this situation.

Disabled vets need our support for access

It is no wonder that suicide rates are so high for returning disabled vets. Despite the efforts of Dr. Bart Billings (retired colonel and founder of the International Civilian and Military Combat Stress Conference) and others, mental health services are still inadequate. Access is limited for physically disabled vets, too. This frustration fosters depression and a feeling of not being appreciated by our vets, who have sacrificed their lives and limbs for us.

Please thank Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata for his support to require Caltrans to install accessible sidewalks. Tell our other state representatives that it is outrageous to flout federal law by claiming a "state's rights exemption." There is funding available from the transportation bonds that we voted for, and from the high gas taxes we pay.

Even if you don't care about our vets, think of yourself. Anyone can be disabled at any time, by auto/sports accidents, surgery on knees, etc. "Freedom" means not being restricted by the callous refusal of bureaucrats to provide access to all our citizens –– a civil rights issue.

Flag Day a celebration of our history

June 14 is Flag Day. The Second Continental Congress authorized a new flag to symbolize a new nation on June 14, 1777. Flag Day was celebrated in Hartford, Conn., in 1861, the first summer of the Civil War.

The first national observance of Flag Day occurred during its centennial, on June 14, 1877. Mayors and governors began issuing proclamations in the 1890s. President Wilson issued a proclamation in 1916 calling for a nationwide observance. Congress, in 1949, authorized June 14 as a permanent day of observance.

For further information about the flag of the United States, its history and proper usage, go to your local library or contact your federal senator or representative.

Although Flag Day is not celebrated as a national holiday, the Santa Margarita Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, urges all Americans to fly their flags high in honor ofˇour national emblem, the Stars and Stripes.

I certainly hope this is a sign of good things to come, unions supporting capitalist progress. As I have said, it is not in the unions best interests to side with those on the left who seek to stop growth, production, or capitalism.
In the past, unions were a mainstay of the Democrat party, competing within the party for an equal share with environmentalists. The two are not compatable, and the environmental end is winning. One seeks to stop maufacturing, coal mining, power production, construction, virtually every that is made, while the other needs it to survive. I've always been puzzled by this, why they did not see this eariler? With the leftist wing in control of the party, I believe the writing is on the wall for these union guys.
Less production means fewer jobs, and unions can't have that. While there may be a few jobs created by these so-called "green" jobs, we still need these older sectors. I think the unions are catching onto this, and that they are on the losing end within their own party. Quite frankly, I'm heartened to see this, and hope this will be the first of good things to come.

Here we go again, with the predictable outcry that same-sex marriage will lead to polygamy, with the mindless "ditto, ditto" echo from Jack D.
Can we just discuss the current issue instead of trying to transmogrify it into something else?
Get a clue!
Same sex marriage deals with discrimination against a type of person (qualitative).
Polygamy deals with quantity (quantitative).
Got the difference? One is protected by the Constitution, the other is not.
They are entirely different issues.
The real problems with polygamy deal with the fact that its normal practice involves women, often underage, being denied equality of opportunity and being oppressed by dominant males. If you can ensure that no child molestation is involved, that women are treated equally, and that numeric constraints are the same for women (polyandry) as for women (polygamy), then frankly I don't care who does what with whom - it doesn't affect me or my marriage.
But the two issues are separate, and I suspect the real reason you have to confuse them is because you are completely out of serious ideas on gender discrimination against same-sex marriage.

They can't find anything of substance to pin on the man, so they have to try and find some gaffe, not from himself, but from others he has met before.
My question is, where is the equal treatment? McCain has far more questionable contacts who have done and said far worse, who were directly tied to his political activity.
Tony Rezko? A marginal character who, like thousands, did some fundraising. Why no mention of Phoenix-based Charles Keating, who was instrumental in shaping McCain's early career, and who, through McCain, managed to poison the well of the Keating Five, spreading his cancer of corruption to senators from other states?
Rev. Wright? A religious contact, never sought for political advice. Where is the mention of Rev. Hagee, Rod Parsley, Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, who made far worse incendiary comments, and who McCain specifically sought out for POLITICAL influence.
Did the North County Times demonstrate bias in not running the balancing piece from the AP? Or did the AP demonstrate bias in not providing it? And if the latter, why did the NCT play along?

On a different note, the primaries are over and it is time to unite.
I've heard all the reasons why Obama should not pick Hillary for VP and many have merit - for a lesser person who cannot deal with a strong rival-cum-ally. Lincoln and Kennedy were given the same warnings, but showed their leadership by rising above it to embrace rather than eschew strong rivals. Now the talk has shifted to Iran, and once again GWB is lying to us all by trying to say that Iran is working on Nuclear Weapons. The part about Iran and Nuclear Weapons is true, but that is NOT the reason we will go to war with Iran.

The reason Bush will go after Iran is because Iran is going to flood the market with cheap oil VALUED IN Euros.

In 2005-2006, The Tehran government developed a plan to begin competing with New York's NYMEX and London's IPE with respect to international oil trades - using a euro-denominated international oil-trading mechanism. This means that without some form of US intervention, the euro is going to establish a firm foothold in the international oil trade. Given U.S. debt levels and the stated neoconservative project for U.S. global domination, Tehran's objective constitutes an obvious encroachment on U.S. dollar supremacy in the international oil market.

Ron wrote on Jun 6, 2008 10:26 AM:I read with great interest your post "Apollo" @9:09 AM. But, one part of your post still puzzles me, perhaps you could clear this up?
You start off with: "Here we go again, with the predictable outcry that same-sex marriage will lead to...."
Some other definition, by those outside the gay/lesbian lifestyle. Simply, It Will. Logically, and Legally you can not argue it differently. If you change the terminology to "persons", it opens up the definition to interpretation by lawyers. It will be challenged, mark my words. If not on the "interpretation" of marriage, but also in conjunction with certain religious rights. Which will make the case even stronger, stronger, in fact, that what is currently being argued about gay relationships.
And secondly, why would you thwart others from seeking their own sense of equal rights? That is hardly a liberal attitude. I think Jack_D nailed it, it will be challenged. No doubt about it.

But you go onto to say:
"The real problems with polygamy deal with the fact that its normal practice involves women, often underage..."
Now, this line of argument I find ridiculous. If your willing to hand birth control to girls as young as 12, then why would you have a problem with those they choose as mates? We have a history, a tradition in this country of young girls marrying older men. In fact, in most countries, this is normal.
So, I guess my question is: Who are YOU?
to say, these people do not have the exact same constituitional right as you do, simply because you disagree with their chosen lifestyle?
And lastly...
I see your re-Submitting again, and again... Do I need to review with you, how peer-review works?

Sometimes good reasons are found to continue, other times not. When the founders designed the Constitution and celebrated individual rights and liberty as much as they did, few even thought that these ideas applied to women and black people. In time, the questions were asked: hey, aren't women people? aren't blacks people too? And the Rons of that age sounded exactly like they do now. "Women vote? What next! Give the vote to chickens?" So as always we must ask what justifies the legal and financial benefits of marriage only for hetersexual couples? And if someone cries, "What next? Polygamy?", the answer can be, "There are no rules that prevent us from asking questions." In a free society, with our national values, this is a good thing, remember?

Oh Ron wrote on Jun 6, 2008 1:29 PM:Haven't you learned yet that when you make your slippery slope arguments about gay marriage, you are, in fact, claiming that a homosexual adult is, as far as a marriage goes, not really different from a 12 year old (or, in the past, an animal). Can you imagine that this might be insulting and idiotic? Listen carefuly: Some people HAVE tried to make the argument that children should be free to have sex with adults (there are even organizations to this effect), and our society has replied with a resounding "No" to them, using as an argument the many ways we treat children as a different category from adults, as well as many facts about child development. So our society has quite frequently considered the matter and proven that your slippery slope does not exist. Each possibility is considered and judged on its own merits, and what might apply to one certainly does not necessarily apply to others. Now if you were rational, Ron, you would read this and admit that extending the argument to children or animals has been shown to be erroneous. You'd not make these claims any longer. But, astoundingly, I predict that you will repeat your claims without regard for the counterargument at all. This is why so many people here have said they've stopped reading your posts.

Incredibly, Bush's people and Israel have simply continued to make their same claims as if that inspection had never occurred. As with Iraq, the war-mongers will repeat its claims endlessly, carefully choosing words to escape the charge that they are technically lying. Most Americans will come to the conclusion that Iran is moving towards nuclear armament. When Bush or Cheney will be challenged about this, they will say "We never said they had weapons..." Crazy as it sounds, we are watching them do with Iran exactly what they did with Iraq, but with even LESS justification. And, like Iraq, whenever anyone questions them, they say "Ahmadinejab is evil" exactly as they said Saddam was evil, and for many Americans, no further explanation is needed. McCain wants to stay the course.

I'm sorry if my question creeps you out, but I'm glad to know you have limits to what you would allow.
Now, no one here is talking about children here, we are talking about women. My definition of women just happens to be based upon very liberal approaches to birth control. I mean..
If she's old enough to know about sex, and old enough to have sex, and old enough to use birth control... In my opinion, then she is old enough to pick who she will have sex with. It's actually a very easy concept. You see.. in the liberal mind, shes definately old enough for all these things, except having sex with who she chooses to?
You give her ALL these tools, and then say.. Don't touch? That's a very odd appraoch, wouldn't you say?
Now, I'm certainly no advocate for these type & kind of sexual behavior, I just really like throwing this idea up in your face, cause I know there is someone out there who does think this ia a good idea. Just as teh polygamists will argue later about marriage. Just because your uncomfortable with it, does not mean other's don't see this as normal. You catching my drift here?
You guy's want to be progressive, I say let's be Super-Progressive, and give everybody what they want. And you guy's blink. Why? Are you offended? Does this shock your sense's?
So, like any good little liberal, I will ask you the same question you ask us, ok?
Who are YOU to say, these people do not have the exact same constitutional right as you do, simply because you disagree with their chosen lifestyle?
That is it? right? You disagree with their chosen lifestyle? And if allowed, will that also hurt your marriage?
