REGION: No trouble from biker gang, officials say
Mongols arrive for chapter meeting
By DARRYN BENNETT - Staff Writer | ∞
NORTH COUNTY ---- Several hundred members of the Mongols motorcycle club arrived Saturday afternoon at the La Jolla Indian Reservation campground near Palomar Mountain for an annual chapter meeting, authorities said.
Law enforcement agencies consider the Mongols to be one of the most violent motorcycle gangs in the country. The San Diego County Sheriff's Department ramped up patrols of the area near the campground in an effort to prevent disturbances, authorities said.
Sheriff's deputies were strategically placed along a roughly 15-mile span of Highway 76 between Pala Road and the Highway 79 interchange, Lt. Bill Donahue said.
As of late Saturday evening, no Mongol arrests had been made and no major problems had been reported, authorities said.
"We're out there to preserve everybody's rights," Donahue said. "And it's been really quiet."
The La Jolla Band of Luiseno Indians owns and manages the campground.
A tribal member who answered the phone Saturday afternoon at the site said the Mongols have followed campground rules and have not disturbed other campers.
"The only disturbance we have had is from the police," said the tribal member, who spoke to the North County Times on the condition of anonymity. "The county (Sheriff's Department) exaggerated the threat, and now they're harassing our customers."
Donahue said authorities were not harassing anyone and that their increased presence in the area this weekend was "a necessary precaution to deal with any potential problems."
The Mongol's meeting is expected to last through Sunday, officials said.
Riverside County officials arrested at least 15 suspected members of the Mongols on various charges Friday and issued numerous citations in a stop on Interstate 15 near the Riverside-San Diego county line, according to Temecula authorities.
Traffic was backed up for several hours in both directions along Interstate 15 and several motorcycles were towed from the southbound shoulder.
The Mongols, formed in the 1970s in California, has chapters in seven states, according to the group's Web site.
The group has been designated an outlaw motorcycle gang by the California attorney general's office and is perhaps best known for a 2002 fight with members of the Hells Angels in Laughlin, Nev., in which three bikers were killed.

It was unnerving to have to pass a motor home pulled over on the west side of the southbond lane with a RCSD pointing a shotgun and another with a riffle pointed eastbond at a motorhome. If it was really neccessary for all that gun play shouldn't they have closed off the freeway. Again RCSO shows itself for what they really are. A taxpayer funded gang.

A gang member on the other hand could care less about your freedom and/or rights, and would just as likely take the constitution and place it where you cannot read it without surgical medical assistance. That may even cause you some type of terminal delay as has been shown in the past when innocents mingle amongst gangs. Then of course as usual when bad things happen the cry would be, "where were the cops" or some donut joke.

No, most of these thugs do not have a 4th right, that is the right to search. They gave up that right when they committed the crime that they did. A officer does not need probable cause to search someone if their 4th right has been revoked. They (the cops) can get this information just from running their license plate. Also, the thugs are Interstate 15 would not pull over when the police tried to stop them. That made the crime fleeing from police. If these idiots want respect then maybe they should start by obeying the laws. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure this out, just a damn good attory. to figure on how to get them out of it.....

Tojuangrande wrote on Jun 8, 2008 11:20 AM:Apparenlty, you are an eminent authority on how fascism begins. Lets see what history tells us, instead. Look to Stalin, Hitler, and even Saadam Hussein. First, they had groups of violent, murderous, criminal thugs serving them (like the Mongols?). They conned the populations of their countries and others, for their own gain (Mongols propoganda?), with lies. If anyone was percieved as against them, whether they spoke or not, they were summarily imprisoned and/or murdered (by the way, in the millions) thus inflicting terror and fear on the general population to control it (gee, why do the Mongols dress and behave the way they do?). Freedom of speech? Due process? Speak against them, you and/or your family will suffer and/or die. You were, however, "due" a "process" if you opposed them. That process was simply to imprison and/or kill people that were merely perceived aas disagreeing with them. If there was any "trial" at all, it was a sham for its propoganda value. What do many of the Mongols membership do? The same thing. It is thug organizations like these that can become the true fascists, and even on a grand murderous scale (history repeatedly shows milions have been killed), if left unchecked. I'm sorry, but American cops in police cars aren't even the slightest bit close to the same thing.

Fighting over turf.
Knowing there were no rival gangs in La Jolla, the Sheriffs department used propaganda to justify a pro active approach which, if conducted on any of you would be called harassment.
But why not?
They already know they can fire weapons at kids and expect our fearless DA to protect them. Imagine the cop defenders if they fired at a gang member for NO REASON?
They can get away with it at will and they know it.
Sometimes the only difference between a cop and a gang member is the badge.
There is NO EXCUSE for this type of behavior absent an immenent and credible threat.
But I find some of you amusing. Some of the same people that cry and whine about Bush being proactive in Iraq actually support this type of proactivism.
Hussein was a known thug too.
Is this an admission that Bush was right?
I am a lot more afraid of an out of control cop than I am a renegade biker gang.
The biker will be prosecuted and the cop wont be.
Bill wrote on Jun 8, 2008 12:59 PM:We are a nation of laws?
Is that a joke?
Tell that to Bonnie Dumanis who only sees a criminal element in those who dont wear badges. When police can fire their weapons at will, and without an immenent threat, then calling us a nation of laws just is not accurate. A nation of laws holds law enforcement to a higher standard based on their acts being under color of authority.
We dont do that.
There was no threat here and the lack of violence is proof.
The Hollister biker rally hasnt seen a violent act since they started having that event again in 1996 and there are rival gangs there.
What reason is there to expect violence here other than the fact that a biker gang was there.
The Mongols have ZERO history of attacking innocent civilians.
There is no reason for this to happen but to grandstand.
This is the type of crap that erodes my trust in law enforcement.
Is someone crying wolf?

The Hells Angels are still quite active in San Diego County, and the Angels and Mongols are still fighting over control of the methylamphetamine market. The situation could have become deadly without the increased law enforcement. People may think that the Angels are not a threat anymore because you don't see them taking over sections of the town like they used to do in places like Pacific Beach and Mission Beach in the '60s and early '70s, but they are more of a national security threat now than ever! They have learned that there are big profits to be made in drugs if they keep a low profile. I grew up with two current Hells Angels, both are well versed in methylamphetamine manufacturing. The Mongols are no different!

It's that simple. The Mongols, the Vagos, Hells Angels, whatever... They didn't earn their reputations by helping old ladies across the street! They are no different than your average street gang. Thugs.

How about this instead... Thank you Mongols for not causing issues, please feel free to visit again as long as you continue to respect the local laws. Police, thank you for stepping up patrols when a "club" with a history of violence came to town. We appreciate the patronage of visitors, and the protection the police provoided us.

I agree with you 100% over the bad cop issue, One bad cop with a little gun and a lot of power is one to many, but most try to do right. However you are 100% wrong and you know it regarding full time bikers, like the two dozen or so biker's that I once knew from the Oakland area (I no longer have contact.) and they ain't no choir boy's, I'm lucky to have gotton out with only three toes missing. You never know who you are talking to on blogs, I'v been there but I'm growen up now, and I know there is more. Fear no man but Fear God.
Tribal Member wrote on Jun 9, 2008 2:10 PM:It wasn't the CLUB that disturbed us as much as how the authoritys upset our tribal commumity to the point of harrasment. We held our General meeting on Saturday and were greeted by unmarked police cars everywhere. These guys may be on record as "Violant" but we, (tribal members) wouldn't have even know they were here if it hadn't been for the constant helicopters overhead and they 20 to 30 cop cars parked at the end of our roads. Our small store was inindated with police and our customers and campers harrased. The Campground and our store are our bread and butter, this is what supports our reservation. Do you think our customers are going to want to come back now??? Some where along the chain of communication, someone jumped the gun, and made more of this than was actually happening.
DISAPPOINTED wrote on Jun 9, 2008 2:17 PM:THIS WAS ALL REDICULOUS!!! THEY WERE ALL HARASSED FOR NO REASON AT ALL!!! THEY WERE JUST GOING CAMPING AND HAVING A GOOD TIME!!! THERE WAS NO REASON TO BACK UP TRAFFIC AND STOP ALL OF THEM ON A FRIDAY AFTERNOON... THIS JUST SHOWS HOW OUR SYSTEM WORKS THESE DAYS....BUT YET THERE ARE DRUNKS AND RAPIST RUNNING LOOSE AND THERE IS NOTHING DONE ABOUT THAT!!! AND WHAT ABOUT ALL THE ILLEGALS HERE JUMPING THE BORDER RECEIVING WELLFARE AND UNEMPLOYMENT AND TAKING JOBS THAT SHOULD BE FOR CITIZENS THIS WAS ALL A BUNCH OF BS TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH... HONESTLY NONE OF YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT THE MONGOLS ARE ABOUT OR HOW THEY LIVE OR WHAT THEY DO...A LOT OF PEOPLE DO BAD STUFF, BUT BECAUSE MEMBERS HAVE HAD PROBLEMS IN THE PAST THAT'S ALL YOU PEOPLE FOCUS ON RIGHT??? YOU NEVER HEAR ABOUT ANY GOOD THAT THEY DO BECAUSE THEN THE LAW WOULD LOOK BAD FOR LABELING THEM AS OUTLAWS WHEN THEY'RE SIMPLY JUST A MOTORCYCLE CLUB.... SO BEFORE YOU GO LEAVING YOUR COMMENTS AND PUTTING IN YOUR 2 CENTS ABOUT IT KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT BECAUSE THEY ARE GOOD PEOPLE.....

Not saying that all of those things that you seen didn't or even don't exist. Just saying that not everyone needs to be a criminal or have a criminal attitude to be a member of the police force or a MC. You are absolutely correct, one never knows who they are talking with on the internet.
To Tribal Member wrote on Jun 9, 2008 4:59 PM:Do you think your cutomers would come back had there been blood bath?
The precense of the police on scene probably detered a whole lot of criminal activity.
No one knows what would of happened if the police were not there.
Samuel wrote on Jun 9, 2008 5:49 PM:Bad cops! oh you bad bad cops. Shame on you for doing your job. Oh and when crime does happen, shame on you cops for harassing those poor criminals. You all should be so ashamed. This seems to be the whinning for most of you. Get a grip will you. Mongols are just as 1% MC as the hells angels or any other outlaw MC. Learn your information of these groups before you start bashing the police about thier jobs. Reality check: The police know thier jobs, and you don't! Please learn your facts before blabbing at the mouth. The comments section will be a lot shorter. Good job RSO and all other agencies that were involved.
