Free class offered to fight identity theft

OCEANSIDE ---- A free consumer education class, "Protect Yourself From Identity Theft," will be held at 2 p.m. June 14 at the Mission Branch Library, 3861-B Mission Ave. Nancy Morris, a business development officer with Mission Federal Credit Union, will provide new information and strategies, including tips to prevent identity theft while traveling this summer. Oceanside Elks to hold bingo

NARFE to meet June 19

OCEANSIDE ---- The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, Oceanside Chapter 706, will meet from 1:30-3:30 p.m. June 19 at the Oceanside Senior Center, 455 Country Club Lane. Speaker will be Meg Munoz from the Oceanside Police Department, who will discuss crimes against the elderly and home security.

Adult summer reading program offered

OCEANSIDE ---- The Oceanside Public Library will hold its inaugural Adult Summer Reading Program June 16 through Aug. 16, titled "Perk Up and Read," supported by the Friends of the Oceanside Public Library. Anyone age 18 and up can read three books or audiobooks and fill out a short form telling a little about the titles they've read or listened to. After the first three books, participants will receive a special-edition coffee mug and qualify for weekly drawings. Dance recital set for June 21, 22

OCEANSIDE ---- Dance Unlimited will present its 19th annual Dance Recital, "Anatomy of a Dance," June 21 and 22 at the Truax Performing Arts Theatre, El Camino High School, 400 Rancho del Oro Drive. The dance revue will showcase more than 500 students, ages 2 1/2 to 18, performing tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical, hip hop, break dancing, clogging and music theater. Christmas in July set

OCEANSIDE ---- Old Mission Montessori School will hold its 31st annual Christmas in July from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 12 and 13. Visitors can jump-start their holiday shopping at the arts and crafts extravaganza featuring more than 175 talented artisans. Artisans interested in participating must meet the handmade criteria, complete an application and pay a $175 fee. Applications are juried by an all-volunteer group. KOCT wins award for excellence

OCEANSIDE ---- The Alliance for Community Media has awarded KOCT-TV the 2008 Hometown Video Festival Award for Overall Excellence. Jewelry design class offered

VISTA ---- The McClellan Senior Center will offer the class, "Jewelry Design: Metallic Treasures," from 10 a.m. to noon June 17 at 1400 Vale Terrace Drive. Boys & Girls Club seeks guitar instructor

VISTA ---- The Boys & Girls Club of Vista is seeking an instructor who would donate time once a week to teach guitar to club members eager to learn the instrument. Some guitars have already been donated to start the program but more are needed, particularly youth-sized guitars with nylon strings. Support also will be provided by an existing music program that allows members to participate in a show choir, piano lessons or an introductory music group for ages 10 and under. League to host art demonstration

CARLSBAD ---- The Carlsbad Oceanside Art League will feature artist Richard Stergulz as its demonstration artist from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. June 13 at the Calavera Hills Community Center, 2997 Glasgow Drive.

Stergulz graduated from the American Academy of Art in Chicago. Stergulz works in oil on masonite board. His work is mostly figurative and he has started plein air painting.  He also teaches art classes. His work hangs in galleries throughout California. Monthly bird count at Batiquitos Lagoon

CARLSBAD ---- The Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation will offer the easy, docent-led bird count walk at 7:30 a.m. today and every second Friday of the month starting from the Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation Nature Center parking lot, located at the end of Gabbiano Lane. The purpose of this walk is to count the birds seen and heard at the lagoon and report the numbers to the Audubon Society. Museum to honor Ravi Shankar at gala

CARLSBAD ---- The Museum of Making Music will hold its sixth annual "Evening of Note" fundraiser, honoring Indian music legend Ravi Shankar, from 7 to 10:30 p.m. June 14 at The Crossings at Carlsbad, 5800 The Crossings Drive. The evening will include a reception with performances by Kamau Kenyatta and the San Diego Youth Symphony & Conservatory String Quartet. The event will also feature special performances by the Patnaik Sisters Indian Dance Troupe, Peter Sprague and Fred Benedetti, and youth cello prodigy Nathan Chan. ENCINITAS ---- Lux Art Institute will host its quarterly Family Day, a free open house event with art activities, studio tours, refreshments and music, from 1 to 4 p.m. June 14 at the center, 1550 S. El Camino Real. The event will give visitors a chance to meet Lux resident artist Daniel Wheeler. Family Day is a quarterly event made possible by support from the James Irvine Foundation. Parking for Family Day is in the KinderCare parking lot and in posted parking zones along El Camino Real. Regular hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
