ECHS football barbecue set
OCEANSIDE ---- A barbecue fundraiser for El Camino High School’s football team will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 28 in the Lowes parking lot at Highway 76 and Old Grove Road. The menu will include combination meals with barbecue chicken and pork ribs, hamburgers, hot dogs and sodas, with prices ranging from $3.50 to $6.50.
Vista resident is college grad
Corina Reynolds, a graduate of Rancho Buena Vista High School and the Vista Academy of Visual and Performing Arts, recently earned a bachelor's degree in fine arts with an emphasis in painting, printmaking and letter press book arts from San Diego State University. She plans to pursue a master's degree and a career in the art field.
Local residents make dean's list
NORTH COUNTY ---- Two area residents earned a spot on the 2008 spring semester dean's list at Morehead State University. They are Brandy Bucher of Encinitas and Alexia Chapparone of Escondido. To be named to the list, students must be enrolled on a full-time basis and achieve at least a 3.5 grade point average for the current semester.
TPHS represents state at competition
CARMEL VALLEY ---- Torrey Pines High School recently represented the state of California at the Panasonic Academic Challenge, held at the Walt Disney Resort in Orlando, Fla. The tournament is a quick-response, trivial pursuit contest, where as many as six teams compete at one time answering questions from a panel of high school and college educators. Iowa Street School students promoted

Santa Margarita Academy promotes students
FALLBROOK ---- The following students were promoted from Santa Margarita Academy recently: Adolfo Alvarado, Hawk Bennett, Allan Burke, Alejandro Calixto, Seth Morgan, Luis Puga, Guy Roman, Matthew Stankewitsch, Omar Vasquez, Hunter Weimer, Robert Avalos, Gabrielle Quercia and Derek Tiller.
Emblem Club scholarships given
ESCONDIDO ---- The Escondido Emblem Club No. 161 recently awarded three college scholarships to local students graduating from Escondido high schools. Recipients included: Zeena Khlafan, San Pasqual High, who ranked 18th in her class and plans to attend the University of Pennsylvania and study medicine to become a pediatrician; Intisar Kharmo, Escondido High, who ranked 16th in her class and plans to attend San Diego State University; and Lacey Buquet, Escondido Charter High, who ranked 10th in her class and plans to attend UC San Diego to study medicine.
Local residents placed on dean's lists
NORTH COUNTY ---- The following North County students earned spots on dean's lists for outstanding academic performance at their colleges: Emily Van Derhoff of Poway, William and Mary College; Colin Ito of Vista, Northern Michigan University; Robert Bala, Southern Utah University; Taylor Bowman of Escondido, University of the Cumberlands; Anamaria Druhora of San Marcos; and Gabriela Hills, Westminster College.
Local residents earn degrees
NORTH COUNTY ---- The following local residents recently earned degrees: Calen Hochstetler, Valley Center, bachelor's degree, liberal arts, Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisburg, Va.; Sidney Taylor, Vista, bachelor's degree, accounting, UC San Diego; and Bree De La Cruz, Oceanside, bachelor's degree, psychology, UC San Diego.
Local resident graduates from Purdue
ESCONDIDO ---- Lyn Henneberger recently graduated from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. with a bachelor's degree in animal sciences. She was a 1997 graduate of Escondido High School, and after high school, she joined the Marines and became a Reservist. Following several years working on cruise ships, she obtained an associate's degree and then continued schooling at Purdue. She now starts working as a marine mammal observer in the Gulf of Mexico where her duties will be to observe and protect the mammals while offshore work is being performed. Her father, Michael, lives in San Marcos.
Former Escondido resident receives law degree
ESCONDIDO ---- Jessika Helen Palmer, formerly of Escondido, recently received the Doctor of Jurispridence from the University of Oregon School of Law In Eugene, Oregon. She is a 2000 graduate of San Pasqual High School and a 2004 graduate of the University of California, Berkeley.
She is the daughter of Larry and Anita Pamler of Escondido, the sister of Erika Palmer of Philadelphia and the granddaughter of Agnes Moos of Vista. She will be working for the law firm of Smith, Freed and Eberhard in Portland, Ore.
Local residents are Cornell grads
NORTH COUNTY ---- These North County residents recently graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.: Adam Jacobs of Del Mar, bachelor's degree, applied economics and management; Nathan Riccitelli of Encinitas, bachelor's degree, biological sciences; John Montgomery of Oceanside, bachelor’s degree, interdisciplinary studies, A&LS; Tracy Wooster of Poway, bachelor’s degree, operational research and engineering; Miles Graham of San Marcos, master's degree, business administration; Saeed Soltani of Valley Center, bachelor's degree, business administration; Adrienne Jubb of Carlsbad, master's degree, management in hospitality and hotel administration; Amanda Van Wieren of Encinitas, bachelor's degree, hotel and business administration; and Geoffrey Gray of Poway, bachelor's degree, hotel and restaurant administration.
VFW sponsors scholarship
VISTA ---- Each year the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States and its Auxiliaries sponsor the Voice of Democracy audio/essay contest for grades 9-12. The contest entry brochures reach the schools in September and the deadline for entries is Nov. 1. Always patriotic, this year's theme is "Service and Sacrifice by America's Veterans Benefit Today's Youth By -----."
Students write and then record a 3- to 5-minute essay. The importance and quality of the recording cannot be over emphasized because the contest is judged while listening to it.
There are prizes at local, district, state and national levels. The state prize includes an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. sponsored by Target Stores. The top prize at national is a $30,000 scholarship and there are many lesser prizes. The local sponsor is Vista's Sgt. Maj. Ralph E. Gibbs, Jr. VFW Post 7041 and its Ladies Auxiliary.
