AZTECS FOOTBALL: Aztecs lock up Wildcats' Morrison

El Camino QB is Long's second N. County recruit

San Diego State football coach Chuck Long didn't have a single North County athlete in either of his last two recruiting classes. Now he has secured two in less than a week.

El Camino High quarterback Colton Morrison joined Oceanside receiver Osmond Nicholas in Long's 2009 class after verbally committing to San Diego State on Thursday.

While running back Brandon Sullivan (Poway) and tight end Ryan Chohany (Rancho Bernardo) were with the Aztecs during Long's first season, they were brought in by his predecessor, Tom Craft. That makes Morrison just the second North County player wooed by the current Aztecs staff, which pronounced prior to its first season in 2006 that it wanted to "build a fence" around San Diego County and keep this region's top talent.

Morrison is among the most physically gifted quarterbacks around. The Wildcats' 6-foot-6, 210-pound signal-caller has a strong arm and finished the 40-yard dash in a swift 4.70 seconds.

He hasn't posted terrific statistics yet, though. Morrison threw for 437 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions last year largely playing behind Tim Willis, but he displayed the raw tools attractive to college coaches.

Morrison had been contacted by several NCAA Division I schools, but chose to remain close to home and loyal to the school that recruited him first.

"They've been following me for a long time now," said Morrison, who also was received scholarship offers from Nebraska and Oregon State. "They were the first school to show interest, which is something I never forgot during the recruiting process. I wanted to stick with San Diego State, which turned out to be the perfect fit."

Morrison's transition to college ball should be easier than most, because both SDSU and El Camino run elements of the spread offense. Morrison has been told he will redshirt his freshman year, after which he will likely be fighting for playing time behind likely 2008 starter Ryan Lindley, a redshirt freshman.

Lindley's presence didn't scare Morrison away, nor did it push him toward a school with an older quarterback corps.

"I'm not worried about that," Morrison said. "I'm just going to focus on my own game and become the best quarterback I can be. After my redshirt year, I expect to get in there and compete right away."

el camino hater wrote on Jun 27, 2008 10:39 PM:I've seen him in passing league and at SDSU tournament and he's over-rated. It is not his fault that he plays for a school that does not have offensive coaching. He does possess raw talent though.

SDSUfan wrote on Jun 27, 2008 11:19 PM:I was also at the SDSU tournament. This kid will be one hell of a Quarterback. He has an excellent arm and size, great grab by Coach Long.

QB Trainer wrote on Jun 28, 2008 7:06 AM:Obviously a hater. When you really know what your looking for, watch Colton who is only 16 play and compete against the top talent in the Nation most from California. Colton posses more talent and arm ability than some college level players. Colton competed against Barley and Bridgford at the Nike combine and clearly out threw them. Colton competed against the top QB's from Hawaii, AZ, OR, WA, No cal and clearly set himself apart on the field and made college level throws they could not make. Over rated obviously SDSU sees him with more talent than Oconnel when he was the same age and you know were he went, We Will See.

ECTerrible Coaching wrote on Jun 28, 2008 7:17 PM:I never seen a school that has so much speed, talent, and size produce such a average football team as El Camino. They have 2900 students to Oceansides 2300, and they have the same type of players, yet they have "no heart" which is a Wildcat trait, and they have no "football mind" coaches. They hire big tough ex-football players with no minds. Well at least finally, they realize they have talent and switch to a spread offence, instead of that garbage dive left/dive right offence scheme. Essentially Oceanside has better coaches and essentially more heart that the WIldcats ! I will say Morrison is good !

Local in the League wrote on Jun 29, 2008 1:09 AM:These kids are terrible. These coaches can't coach. He only threw a few passes. He only had a few catches. Why are they being recruited? There are other players who are better. What have they shown with the pads on?

Get that extra rep in kid. Continue the early morning workout. One more throw on the dig route. My last sprint. No, I can put out 3 more. Read your keys and let the traffic clear. Trust your coaches and let those who talk or type, continue to talk and type. Work smart and stay focused!

AztecDaddy wrote on Jun 29, 2008 7:32 AM:He was the starter last year until he got injured. He is 6'5" with a cannon for an arm. Footwork and mechanics can be corrected and he will have lots of time to develop because Lindley has the reigns of the Aztec program for 4 yrs barring injury.

Grow Up.... wrote on Jun 29, 2008 12:16 PM:What is every high school football players dream???? To go and play college football. So what did this kid probably do? Go to camps, work out, take visits to try and get his name out there. Maybe it just so happends that he had one of those rare offseasons were he put on 20-30 pounds and trained all offseason, so he went to SDSU and really impressed them? So how about we all stop hating on this kid, man up, and congradulate him. Congrats kid. Best of Luck.

i dont know... wrote on Jun 29, 2008 3:03 PM:Chuck Long has won 3 National Championships, Coached a Heisman Winning QB, was a runner up in the Heisman race himself, played in the NFL for 8-9 years, so probably knows what he's doin in terms of signing a high school QB. Congradulations Colton. Good Luck at SDSU.

Ricky ...again wrote on Jun 29, 2008 4:21 PM:one thing i forgot to add...The Qb position belongs to Ryan lindley for the next couple of years...This Morrison kid has no chance competing against Ryan Lindley......Lindley is better in Every aspect of the QB game...

Can someone please explain to me how a Qb who was a backup to start the season gets scholarship offers to (supposedly)Nebraska and Oregon State? serioulsy since when do college coaches take a couple passing tournaments and then turn around and offer a guy a full ride?

Herb Buyer wrote on Jun 30, 2008 12:18 AM:Shouldnt critize these kids. They are just kids, no need to kill their spirits. Bills,a wife, gas prices, and society will do that. And rememebr this I won many CIF championships with 2 plays, Dive left and Dive right. Also I never wore a head-set like Joe Paterno, so how did I call those plays ? Anyway its wrong to critize these kids.

Jay wrote on Jun 30, 2008 6:43 AM:Not only should Long be gone, but Schemmell as well. Schemmell has played the biggest role in completely destroying any hopes the Aztecs have of re-building their football program. Poor recruiting has crushed the Aztecs since Long arrived. Here's looking at another 2 or 3 win season!

Sancarlos wrote on Jun 30, 2008 4:14 PM:Jay, I disagree with you. The jury is still out on Long and Schemmel for that matter. I certainly hope your predection for this season is wrong!!!

Torrey Pines wrote on Jun 30, 2008 5:47 PM:WOW what a bunch of pathetic comments! who made you people the experts? I have seen Colton in the field and he is really gifted and he is one of the nicest and most humble guys around. Don't let these ridiculous comments bring your spirits down. Great choice Coach Long you obviously new what you were doing! Also I heard you were a Christian, remember to always give all the glory to God! read Isaiah 40:31

To Torrey Pines wrote on Jun 30, 2008 10:52 PM:What do you know about heart, when Nepotism is your best friend. Yet, realty does dominate in your realty, when performance matters $. In this make beleive word we ACT in, you win, the Torrey Pines football team expects to win beacuse of Neptism they get all they desire. Yet, on the football field it is performance rather than nepotism that is the deciding factor. So please dont quote Bible scriptues, when in fact you are the obstacles that the Bible teaches about.

Jay wrote on Jul 1, 2008 7:28 AM:To SanCarlos ... based on the basic measureable indicators such as wins and losses, attendance, student support, community support, etc..., the Aztecs have not improved at all since Schemmel and Long arrived. In fact, things have gotten worse. For instance, wins are down, attendance is down, student support is down. Long is virtually non-existent with regards to recruiting in San Diego County. All of this under Schemmel's watch!

Brown eyes wrote on Jul 1, 2008 9:29 AM:CONGRADULATIONS COLTON! You are Hot!

Get Real wrote on Jul 1, 2008 8:47 PM:I would disagree with QB trainer. Colton was not on the same level as Barkley or Bridgford at the Nike combine. Not even close. Colton does throw a nice "combine" ball however, but what has he done? He has never been a high school starting QB. Not at Vista, not at Carlsbad, and not last year at El Camino. I do believe he started and played one complete game last year against a last place Fallbrook team. Don't get me wrong, he's a good kid but I think SDSU made a risky choice on an unproven QB.

Colton Who wrote on Jul 3, 2008 5:40 PM:This is why SDSU is so good, they recruit backup QB's...That's exactly what all the good D1 schools do hahaha

el camino hater wrote on Jul 3, 2008 9:59 PM:To qb trainer. If you read my last sentence I said that he does possess raw talent, but is not well coached by the wildcat coaching staff. That is why his mechanics are poor, footwork is sloppy and cannot read a complicated defensive secondary...That can all be learned! Really the reason he was offered was one of their first choice recruits committed (Colorado) and their other has too many big D1 school offers. If you were a real qb trainer you would of noticed his poor mechanics and footwork and the poor ability to read coverages.

el camino poor coaching wrote on Jul 4, 2008 6:11 PM:El Camino has so so much talent, speed, and size, just as much as the Pirates and some years more. However, year after year they lose to many games against average teams. They possibly have the worst coaching staffs and systems in North County. Coach Carroll would have won 8 CIFs with that school. Colten is solid, but I feel the coaching staff will stagnate him to realty ?

what ya know wrote on Jul 10, 2008 8:30 AM:This is directed to "el camino poor coaching" commits, Coach Carrol coached over 10 plus years before he won his first title. El Camino Wildcats were the talk of the town and county before the pirates started winning. You should check your-self before you make bad commits about one the top programs in the state. It takes time to adapt to a new system and coaching relm. You must understand, That staff replaced a legend. (Herb Meyers)

HUH wrote on Jul 10, 2008 10:35 AM:El Camino? One of the top programs in the STATE?

They are not even one of the top programs in North County.

Wildcat Fan wrote on Jul 10, 2008 7:58 PM:Despite a drop in the winning %, EC is still putting as many or more players into 4 year schools as anyone. The coaching is fine at EC, and the championships will soon return.

To What ya Know wrote on Jul 16, 2008 6:38 PM:Coach Carrol started at Oceanside in 1989 and won his first championship during the 1995 season. That is not 10 years, you did go to El Camino. I grew up in Oceanside and played against those 1980s team, I know about EC and lived it. Herb Meyer was a figure head, only had 2 plays Dive left and Dive right. Oceanside has 2300 students to El Caminos 9800, as well El Camino has just as fast, talented, and big players and sometimes more that OCeanside, however their weak coaching has caused diminsihed returns. This year EC has a huge team, again very talented and fast, and watch Oceanside will destroy them, because of "one intangelble", Coaching ! Also the Michael Jordan factor, which is "heart" !

EC wrote on Jul 17, 2008 8:52 AM:It's obvious that El Camino's football progam has taken a hit since the Herb Meyer Days. The coaching staff and most importantly the head coach play a major role in that decline. Considering the amount of kids and talent available at El Camino this program should be a contender every year. And because of Oceanside's winning tradition many kids are choosing to play there even though they are in the El Camino district.

Backup wrote on Jul 17, 2008 9:01 AM:Congrats to Colton, that's a major accomplishment. The El Camino program is on the rebound and has some great talent coming up in the next few years. The backup QB Jones has got a great arm and is mobile and helped lead the JV team to an undefeated season last year. With a new offense in place this year I think the Wildcats will catch alot of teams by suprise.

Oceanside wrote on Jul 17, 2008 7:09 PM:Kids in the Oceanside district go to EL Camino to play basketball. I can mention a few names over the years, but I wont. The bottom line is, El Camino has the same level of talent and maybe more than OCeanside, expecially in layers of depth. Yet, Oceanside is better. Hence, the "system", which is augmented off of the coaching. This years El Caminos team is huge, fast, probably the biggest and fastest team since Sweats era. Yet, I will bet they will lose 3 games, and to Oceanside. Because of coaching, x's and o's but also the mental training. Like Jordan compared to Kobe, look at the mental states.
