LETTERS: NCT, June 27, 2008

History repeating itself?

Do yourself a favor and look up Michael Dukakis in 1988. Then-Vice President Bush was against offshore drilling in California, but for it in Texas. Where did the VP come from? Dukakis was a visionary predicting the oil crisis, and just think if he had become president we would have offshore drilling in California and not be relying on foreign oil.

Another incident Dukakis criticized the VP for in 1988 was failing to oppose the sale of arms to Iran. Now watch the Republican hypocrites jump all over the McCain offshore drilling proposal, which was formerly a Democrat idea. Funny how timely this all is for the Bushes. Guess they need that extra billion coming from drilling for their retirement. And the VP's arms deal for Iran is ironic; if McCain gets in he will see to it we invade Iran. Very nice, our men fighting against our own weapons. Nice going, Bush I.

Another Mexican Consulate event in North County

The North County Times again decided not to report that the San Diego Mexican Consulate conducted another large mobile services event on June 14 in San Marcos, 50 miles from their designated consul building in San Diego. NCT didn't think you needed to know that a church on Borden Road let the Mexican government use the inside of their church to issue hundreds of matricula cards (Mexican ID). ...

About 20 members of the San Diego Minutemen were there on the public sidewalk protesting and documenting this event. ... What we observed was shocking. Multiple middle fingers and shouts of "this is our land" by Mexican citizen "customers" to our peaceful observers. Photos and full report can be seen at www.SanDiegoMinutemen.com.

Our U.S. State Department said they encouraged the church to allow it. Further proof that the Bush administration does not distinguish between legal immigrants and those who come here illegally. Angry yet? Call your congressman to stop these mobile consulate events, which are becoming more frequent as immigration enforcement increases.

Make up your own contract

The contract of marriage is the most important of all human transactions. It is the very basis of civilized society. Same-sex people, make up your own legal contract!

Beyond same-sex marriage

The California courts have set the stage for a new battle to redefine the family structure. Marriage is no longer confined to one man and one woman. I am willing to bet that after November's casting of a constitutional ballot to define marriage as between one male and one female, the battle for polygamy will begin. Now partner A can come back with another partner B, C and D, etc. The judges and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will be happy because money will be coming into the state treasury for other liberal causes.

If gender does not matter, neither does the number. Other arrangements must and will be accommodated. If marriage is only about sex, not procreation, then whatever sexual arrangements to include animals can be imagined and will have to be recognized by law through marriage, as redefined by the recent California judicial decree.

The same-sex marriage debate is far from over. It will stop when marriage ceases to matter, which will be to the detriment of our already existing children and grandchildren. We have forgotten who established marriage and its reasons for being. God forgive us for what we arrogantly do.

What we forget, we tend to repeat

Poor Mr. Pulse (Letters, June 4) is "sick and tired of hearing about the suffering Jews." He prefers we forget about persecution of Jews. It's common knowledge that what we forget, we tend to repeat. Mr. Pulse is going to hear about it over and over again, whether he likes it or not, so get over it.

Except for the Gypsies and homosexuals Hitler slaughtered, the Jews were the only ones without a means of defense. The Poles and Russians had armies. Hitler's "New Order" was dedicated to total genocide of the Jewish people, their religion and contributions to mankind.

Mr. Pulse and his ilk attempt to dispel what has been proven by the Dead Sea scrolls, that the Jews lived in the land of Canaan (Israel) thousands of years before the name "Palestinian" ever surfaced. His so-called experts back him up. Proof that the forces at work (be they misguided Jews or other) are trying to convince everyone that the Jewish religion and the Holocaust are myths. I regret it bothers Pulse that we now have a country to defend us along with a God to sustain us. Mr. Pulse can read his books. I'll stick to my Bible.

Stop enabling celebrities

Here you go again –– authority is always wrong, especially when celebrities break the law. Just read Ms. Figueroa's article "Opening statements in Foley civil trial to begin," June 20. Wow, can you believe sports heroes are going to testify on Foley's behalf! I keep asking myself, who would attack someone with a gun when one is unarmed? Maybe a drunken bully with road rage, especially when one is a big pro-football player and his adversary is a smaller guy.

For some reason, news media enable celebrities to have a sense of entitlement. They can do no wrong. This guy has had many brushes with the law. His infamous history with law enforcement is well-documented in newspapers. What has Foley done in the past that was not reported? I am not sure [people] are aware of the horrible devastation drunken drivers cause. Parents, children, grandparents, entire families are either maimed or murdered. For the sake of them, stop enabling celebrities to have an untouchable status in our society.

Why do we tolerate this?

When I asked my state representatives what they could do to save my water, the best answer they had was that they support desalinization plants. Not a word that their own poorly written legislation is the reason we cannot build them.

It was recently brought to my attention that the reduction of water from the Delta is due to state environmental regulations passed by our legislators. They can't fix their own regulations? Now state Sen. Kehoe has the OK to pass another half-cent tax for "quality of life," which will cost me more money and further reduce my ability to pay for my needs.

I need water, reasonably priced fuel, housing, electricity, roads, jobs, (free) access to public transportation, public lands, beaches and everything else I already pay for. They allow my unmanaged forests to burn every year and do not allow clearing 500-foot areas around lines and property. Over 50 percent of the California budget is already spent, so why do we have a full-time state government that refuses to fix the rest? Why do we tolerate politicians and bureaucrats who only tell us to live with less and pay more? Call and ask.

Too much shaking in Fallbrook

I have lived in Fallbrook for 30 years, near Camp Pendleton. Training and explosions have been a serious problem for the homeowners during that time. Explosions frequently shake our homes so violently that they crack and pop, causing real damage. A search on the Internet will show that the Richter scale registers from the impact of artillery and bombs exploded at the Marine base.

Beginning on the weekend of June 14, there have been continuous explosions each day and through the night. People who live in the area tell stories of their animals being so scared that they jump through windows, among other behavior caused by fear. Currently my dog is boarded in the town of Vista. She has not slept for three days because of the shaking and motion caused by the explosions.

There is no reason for the use of expensive high explosives for target training. Frequently helicopters fly over Fallbrook at high speeds and low altitudes, causing homes under them to vibrate, and the noise drowns out most other sounds. I have brought the issue to local and national politicians with little or no response.

Why drill for oil now?

We hear from some of our experts that drilling for oil will not solve our problems with higher gas prices. They say we need to build more gas-saving autos. Build more wind and solar-power devices. These suggestions sound good, and I agree with them. But something vital is overlooked.

Trucks that deliver our food, etc. Airlines that deliver people, etc. The rising gas prices are raising food, goods and travel prices. There is no way we can change the way they operate. It won't happen before our children's children's lifetime.

Whereas, in the near future, we can have our own oil and control the prices. We, the voters, must convince our legislators to vote for offshore and ANWR drilling. ANWR is the size of a credit card lying on a football field.

Better to be safe, not sorry

In response to Mark Payne's letter of June 18: Don't use a seatbelt for safety. Oops! If you have an auto accident, you may wind up a paraplegic.

It is better to be safe than sorry. As with the threat of global warming, let's choose to acknowledge the threat. Check the almanac regarding the growth of the world population: year 1900, 1.6 billion; year 2000, 6.1 billion. Disease, famine, wars –– the population still continues to grow unabated.

And so it goes with pollution from autos, generating plants and other sources of CO2, unrecyclable waste, etc. I don't want to confuse him with facts, if his mind is already made up. Let's not leave our children with a dead planet.

Conrad Denarski treats us to his imaginings about sex with animals, polygamy, etc. I'll take his bet. The courts and legislature know where to draw the line. In fact, last month's Supreme Court specifically excludes such hysterical possibilities. This is obvious fear mongering for those too ignorant or uninformed to know any better. None of us choose our sexual orientation. About 15% of us are homosexual. High time they are recognized as full and equal human beings.

They still do not get it! It does not matter if you try to make "separate but equal."
The point of the Supreme Court decision was that you cannot have a legal institution that discriminates on the basis of gender; you can not have an official legal mandate that requires a person to discriminate based on gender, forcing a man to choose a woman and vice versa. You can allow them to make those choices of their own free will, but not legally mandate them.
And please understand, the Constitution does not have a requirement about numbers, so polygamy is irrelvant to any Constitutional legal issue and, at most, it would be a legislative matter.

Bill Too wrote on Jun 27, 2008 12:27 PM:- SECOND TRY -

(Not to be confused with Bill One) The recent Supreme Court decision on guns has started up a hornets nest of replies from the anti gun faction – supposedly the liberals. I am among the “liberals” – a lot of us – who are NOT against gun ownership. My background is training Sergeant in the US Army during the shooting phase of the Korea “Police Action.” and was also a police firearms training instructor. I have also NOT had a firearm in my possession for over 20 years – not because I am afraid of them, but because I do not feel that I need them.

The problem we have with interpretation of the Constitution is that we attempt to interpret the document by reading the words as they mean today - not as the original writers intended them. We try to read their minds after all of these years. If we read the entire Constitution we see that as the years passed the wording became more verbose. The amendments became longer and wordier in order to attempt to avoid lengthy legal interpretations. What would the second amendment look like if it was updated to the original intent?

In a previous post I mentioned the Mexican Constitution of 1917. Here is their version. This was 1917 – they learned from our problems. This is the translated version – I can provide the Spanish version if anyone cares – no hay problema.

Constitution of Mexico
TITLE ONE
Chapter I
Individual Guarantees

Article 10. The inhabitants of the United Mexican States are entitled to have arms of any kind in their possession for their protection and legitimate defense, except such as are expressly forbidden by law, or which the nation may reserve for the exclusive use of the army, navy, or national guard; but they may not carry arms within inhabited places without complying with police regulations.

You will notice that it says INHABITANTS not CITIZENS. The weapons forbidden are military and police caliber weapons and full automatic weapons.

The Constitutions of many other countries have more up to date wording than the earliest parts of ours. That is why we have a Supreme Court to interpret what our wording means. We have a right to disagree, but that does not make it law. Only the Supreme Court decision has that power.

Surfer says is quickly, poignantly and keeps on ridin’ the high waves. He and I probably do not have a whole lot in common, but I like his style.

Hanging Ten is a surfing maneuver, considered one of the most impressive and iconic stunts one can perform with a surfboard. Hanging ten is when the surfer positions the surfboard in such a way that the back of it is covered by the wave and the waverider is free to scootch to the front of the board, hang all ten toes over the nose of the board, all while holding two "high fives" up in the air as a celebratory indication of this feat.

Others prefer to be with those that mirror their physical and mental image.

Others do not realize how much Jews did to grow oranges etc. in the desert. And how much scientific, engineering, medical, agriculture, etc. knowledge they have which they share with the world.

The number of Jewish Nobel prize winners (approximately 160 in all), is far out of proportion to the percentage of Jews in the world's population of 0.2%.

Polygamy was began millennia ago by heterosexuals. Heterosexual polygamy is still legal today in some Middle Eastern countries, and was common in the Middle East during ancient Biblical times. The Old Testament speaks of many instances of plural wives. So this sin, if it be a sin, is a creation of the heterosexual persuasion. As for your statement about “who established marriage and its reason for being” you are dead wrong. Marriage was instituted by power brokers to control the personal lives of other people, except for those individuals who had the freedom to bond together in love and fidelity. It is this that gays seek.

Yes, the Democrats did offer competing budget proposals to Reagan's, which called for LESS SPENDING than Reagan's. The actual votes are a matter of public record. Republicans held together while Southern (Boll Weevil) Democrats crossed over to give them a majority, though the Democrats did wangle 16.1 BILLION dollars in cuts off what Reagan proposed. On economic issues, there was no "Democratic majority," as conservative Southern Democrats routinely broke ranks to vote with Republicans and gradually many of them, including Jesse Helms, Strom Thurmond and Phil Gramm changed their party affiliations from Democrat (in name only) to Republican (reflecting their actual ideologies).
