ESCONDIDO: 9 elementary schools swapping leaders
New principals take over posts for 2008-09 school year beginning Tuesday

ESCONDIDO ---- More than two dozen retirements and several million dollars in budget cuts made throughout the spring for next year have resulted in the shuffling of administrators between nine Escondido elementary schools, district officials said.
Beginning Tuesday, the Escondido Union School District will have four new principals, three veteran principals heading up new schools and one former school administrator developing and expanding the student intervention programs at the district office, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resource Bob Leon said.
Also, Fabiola Elias, who was working with students who are learning English and developing ways to infuse technology into the curriculum at Glen View Elementary, will take over as an assistant principal at Mission Middle School, Leon said.
"Due to some very fine people retiring we had a lot of openings," trustee Linda Woods said. "I am thrilled that we had a lot of people that we were able to promote from within our district, though."
All of the vacant principal and assistant principal posts were filled with district employees.
Several of the new principals served last year as assistant principals, who otherwise would have been reassigned as teachers due to the elimination of their positions because of budget cuts, district officials said.
Trustees decided in April to remove one of the two or three assistant principals from each of the district's five middle school campuses as a way to reduce spending for the upcoming 2008-09 fiscal year, which begins July 1.
The middle school assistant principal plan places two assistant principals at Escondido Union's largest schools ---- Rincon and Mission ---- and 1.5 assistant principal positions at Del Dios, Bear Valley and Hidden Valley middle schools, as well as the largest elementary school, Oak Hill.
The new line-up of administrators is as follows:
-- Leticia Ortegon, a former assistant principal at Hidden Valley, is the principal at Glen View Elementary.
-- Beth Crooks, a former assistant principal at Rincon Middle School, will be the principal at Reidy Creek Elementary.
-- Kelly Mussatti, a former assistant principal at Mission Middle School, will be the principal at Juniper Elementary.
-- Steve White, a former assistant principal at Bear Valley middle School, will be the principal at Conway Elementary.
-- Lisa Clark, the former principal at Conway Elementary, is moving to the principal post at Bernardo Elementary.
-- Mark Garner, the former principal at Juniper Elementary, is moving to the principal post at Bear Valley Middle School.
-- Jim Scoot, the former principal at Glen View Elementary, is moving to the principal post at Miller Elementary.
-- Leila Sackfield, the former principal at Reidy Creek Elementary, will be a principal on special assignment at the district.

What do you mean learning english wrote on Jun 30, 2008 12:54 PM:These kids should already know English, I am not OK with my tax dollars being spent this way
Learning English is imperative for success in school. wrote on Jun 30, 2008 1:37 PM:Not all children are fluent in English when they begin school here. Kids come to us from anywhere and everywhere under a variety of circumstances and do not always speak, let alone read & write, fluent English when they get here. Would you rather they not learn English, drop out of school, and become the next tenants of our prison system because they can't get a job? English language development is very important in schools today.

Someone cant spell wrote on Jun 30, 2008 3:55 PM:My son attended Glen View and the principal was JIM SCOTT, not JIM SCOOT - come on, this is an article about education, and you can't even spell the man's name correctly? GEEZ!!!
Lets Teach wrote on Jul 1, 2008 10:51 AM:something really valuable instead of the tripe we shove at the kids now. I'm getting ready to graduate with my Ph.D. in Education and look forward to an administrative position in the SD county area.
The problem as I see it is that we are not providing the students with the proper educational materials. For example, what good is "Physical Education" when they will end up flipping burgers all day? I see our mission as educators is to make the children better burger flippers rather than having them play hula hoops or tiddly winks.
My dissertation is about just this; matching education with expected life career. Everyone knows that by the age of 10, state-mnadated testing has already singled out those who will become professionals versus those who will become employeesin the service industries. This we gear our educational programs to help each child become the best waitress, cook, car washer, customer service rep, phone survey taker etc. etc.
I have several interviews at North County schools this week. Hopefully I'll soon be employed and putting my plans into action. keep a good thought.

lets teach wrote on Jul 1, 2008 7:26 PM:Your statement was one of the worst I have ever read. You are going to try to tell me that by age 10 you can already tell where a kid is headed. I hope all North County Schools do not give you a shot at a job once they hear you philosophy. Maybe by age 16 but 10 you obviouly are not a teacher of 10-14 year olds. Some dont even know if they like boys or girls yet. Get a clue!!!!

You talk about not knowing what a child will be like at the age 10. If a child has not learned the english language yet what makes you think he will be productive in any other field but the "service" industry?
Common now, This is just getting out of hand.
To Lets Teach wrote on Jul 3, 2008 11:57 PM:I am saddened that this is what you have learned from getting your Phd and your supposed experience in the education field. As a teacher and parent I do not believe that one can be judged on a series of standardized tests. Your theory belittles much of the research about learning/education and stages of development. My mission as an educator is to inspire children to love learning and to go as far in life as they can. It is NOT my job to track certain students down a path in life that may or may not meet their needs. We need to educate equally... this is America! Everyone has access to the American Dream and I will not dumb down my curriculum for any student who walks through my classroom door!
to the comment above wrote on Jul 5, 2008 2:18 PM:You would rather dumb down your curriculum for a student that doesnt know english then. Nor will they ever learn it. They have no need to learn it.
lets teach is a spoof wrote on Jul 5, 2008 4:55 PM:Folks, we're being "had" by a trickster. One doesn't get a Ph.D. in Education, he or she gets an Ed.D in Education. Job interviews for prospective administrators are conducted at school district offices, not schools per se (which are shut down for the summer). Standardized tests test for academic competencies, not career aptitude. Physical education should try to deal with fitness and teaching children teamwork and how to compete fairly. Nice try, lets teach. Let's learn a little punctuation while we're at it,
