Nonprofits can earn money selling tickets
OCEANSIDE ---- A meeting for all nonprofit agencies wanting to participate in selling tickets for the 12th annual Big Band Bash by the Beach will be held at 10 a.m. July 8 in the training conference room at County Health & Human Services, 1701 Mission Ave.
Nonprofit organizations can sell $5 tickets to this year's event and keep all the proceeds, made possible by a community grant from the county of San Diego. The big band event will be held from noon to 7 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Oceanside Pier Amphitheatre. E-mail jaywimmer@yahoo.com or quotetaker@cox.net.
Veterans Association to hold fundraiser
OCEANSIDE ---- The Veterans Association of North County will hold a fundraiser from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. July 9 at the Oceanside Bandshell. The event will include food and four bands: The Pharoahs, Dixieland Band, Nitro Express and J.D. Crawford. Cost for food and an opportunity drawing is $2 per person, $5 for families. Oceanside Kiwanians will sell funnel cakes, popcorn and sodas. Profits will be used to renovate the old police station at 1617 Mission Ave into a veterans center. Call (760) 941-4712.
Healing Clinic slated for July 12

Baby Layette Program seeks donations
OCEANSIDE ---- Women of the First Presbyterian Church of Oceanside have a Baby Layette Program for needy mothers in the Tri-City area. A member assembles layettes with items donated by concerned church and community members. They are given to the Oceanside Public Health nurses to distribute to needy clients. Baby blankets, shirts, nightgowns and sleepers in sizes newborn to one year are always needed, as well as bed-size sheets in good condition that can be cut to crib size, and cloth and disposable diapers. Items need not be new, just clean and in good condition. Donations are welcome at the church office in boxes labeled "Layette." Last year, the church donated 90 layettes to needy Tri-City mothers.
The church offices are open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. most Mondays through Thursdays, and 9 a.m.-noon Fridays at 2001 El Camino Real in Oceanside. Call (760) 757-3560.
American Legion holds barbecue
VISTA ---- The American Legion will hold a July 4 Clubroom Fundraiser Barbecue from 1-5 p.m. at 321 S. Santa Fe. Menu includes pork ribs, hamburgers, hot dogs, cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans and dessert for $8. Call (760) 726-0472.
Botanical Gardens holds July 4 fundraiser
VISTA ---- Alta Vista Botanical Gardens will host its annual July 4 fundraiser at Brengle Terrace Park, 1400 Vale Terrace Drive. The park has a great view of the city's fireworks display. There will be entertainment and Famous Dave's barbecue. The event will open at 5:30 p.m., dinner is served at 7:30. Beer, wine and refreshments will be served. E-waste recycling event set

Self-defense workshop set
VISTA ---- Pink Pineapple Scrapbooks will hold a "One-Second Street Self-Defense Workshop from 7-8:30 p.m. July 14 at 751 Shadowridge Drive. Guest instructors will show simple, yet devastating self-defense techniques based on the ancient Okinawan martial art of pressure points. Workshop is for women 15 and older. Sculpture camps offered for youths
CARLSBAD ---- The Lynn Forbes School of Sculpture is still accepting students for its weekly Summer Sculpture Camps running through Aug. 25. The camps are designed for ages 6-14 and run from 1-5 p.m. weekdays at the school, 300 Carlsbad Village Drive, Suite 102. Cost is $165 per week. Cost for materials is $25.
Also, the School of Sculpture and Francoise Dupont Wainwright will conduct a show in August for youths who have completed classes in the school's summer camps. Grand prize winner will receive $1,000. Other cash prizes will be awarded to first- through fourth-place winners in each age division. Non-cash prizes also will be awarded.

Dietary planning offered for seniors

Senior center offers rides
CARLSBAD ---- The Carlsbad Senior Center's Transportation Program can assist Carlsbad residents 60 years and older who cannot drive and need transportation for medical appointments or grocery shopping .Transportation for medical appointments is provided Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Appointments must be made at 2 p.m. or later and end by 4:30 p.m. Service area is limited. Wednesday afternoons are reserved for grocery shopping at Stater Brothers. The first Thursday afternoon of the month, transportation is provided to go to Wal-Mart or Trader Joe's. Mondays through Fridays, seniors can enjoy lunch at the Carlsbad Senior Center. Carlsbad Lagoon Day set for July 12
CARLSBAD ---- The city of Carlsbad will celebrate its natural wonders with its second annual Carlsbad Lagoon Day on July 12. All three lagoons, Aqua Hedionda, Buena Vista and Batiquitos, will host separate programs for the day. Batiquitos Lagoon will be offering a special presentation on the culture and traditions of Luiseno Native Americans. Events will include a 9 a.m. story time for children, featuring traditional Luiseno storyteller Cathleen Chilcote Wallace; and a presentation from 10 to 11:30 a.m. of "The Luiseno Band ---- Past, Present and Future," featuring Wallace, traditional basket maker Diana Caudell, and Mel Vernon, council member of The San Luis Rey Band of Mission Indians. An easy docent-led walk is also planned. The Nature Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Meet at the Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation Nature Center at the end of Gabbiano Lane in Carlsbad. Monthly bird count at Batiquitos Lagoon
CARLSBAD ---- The Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation will offer an easy, docent-led bird count walk at 7:30 a.m. every second Friday starting from the Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation Nature Center parking lot, at the end of Gabbiano Lane. The purpose of the walk is to count the birds seen and heard at the lagoon and report the numbers to the Audubon Society. Fall prevention chairwoman to speak at senior center
CARLSBAD ---- Kim Bell, physical therapist and chairwoman of the Fall Prevention Task Force of San Diego County, will join podiatrist Mark Miller to give seniors tips on reducing the risk of falls from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 9 at the Carlsbad Senior Center, 799 Pine Ave. Bell and Miller will discuss fall prevention and share information on balance and mobility and tips on home safety. Seniors learn about medical insurance
CARLSBAD ---- The Carlsbad Senior Center will host "Navigating the Medical Maze" with Susan Soest, administrator with Silverado At Home, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. July 10 at the center, 799 Pine Ave. Soest will discuss medical insurance coverage and what Medicare really covers. Soest has worked in healthcare and geriatrics for 15 years providing counseling, advocacy and hospital discharge planning services for older adults with chronic illnesses and traumatic injury. Center to screen 'The Fighting Sullivans'
CARLSBAD ---- The Carlsbad Senior Center will salute the military for Independence Day with the screening of the 1944 film, "The Fighting Sullivans," from 1 to 3 p.m. July 10 at the center, 799 Pine Ave. The film stars Anne Baxter and Thomas Mitchell. Based on a true story from World War II, the movie chronicles the lives of a close-knit group of Iowa brothers during the '30s and '40s, and their patriotic service in the Pacific theater. Learn all about the Macintosh computer
