Lowe's recognized for fundraising
MURRIETA ---- The Lowe's store in Murrieta was honored by the Muscular Dystrophy Association for its nation's best fundraising efforts during the Shamrocks Against Dystrophy campaign.
Paper shamrocks were sold for $1, $5 and $10 in Lowe's stores around St. Patrick's Day. The Murrieta store raised $11,620 selling the shamrocks, more than any other store in the country.
Funds will support MDA programs in the region.
The MDA treated the store to a barbecue and awards ceremony last week.

SENIORS
Senior driving course offered
The AARP offers an ongoing driver safety program. The eight-hour course is offered for drivers 50 and older at various locations throughout Southwest County.

Singles to gather at restaurant
TEMECULA ---- Half Century Singles will host an hors d'oeuvre social at 6 p.m. July 18 at the Hungry Hunter restaurant.

Donations sought for Grandparents Day
The Volunteer Center of Riverside County plans to celebrate Grandparent's Day on Sept. 7 by delivering bouquets of flowers to residents of nursing care facilities.
The group is requesting $25 donations to purchase a bouquet, promote public awareness regarding the needs of lonely elderly residents in nursing home and fund educational services and training materials.
The bouquets will be delivered by ombudsmen.

Assistance program under way
Representatives are available at two Southwest County locations to provide free assistance to people needing help applying for homeowner or renter assistance.
Eligible residents must be 62 years or older, or blind or disabled, and a United States citizen, designated alien or qualified alien. Claimants must have owned and occupied a home or mobile home on Dec. 31, 2007, or paid at least $50 in rent each month with a household income in 2007 of $44,096 or less.
Aid is also available from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays at Mary Phillips Senior Center, 41845 Sixth St., Temecula and 9 a.m. to noon Thursdays at Murrieta Senior Center, 41717 Juniper St.
No appointment is necessary. The service will be offered until Oct. 14.
Participants must bring proof of age or disability, property tax bill if a homeowner, federal and state tax returns for 2007 and any other income records.

Caregiver group to meet
CANYON LAKE ---- Caregiver Connection Support Group will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Monday at Canyon Lake Community Church.
There are activities planned for both the caregiver and those they are caring for.

Children's support group to meet
MURRIETA ---- Michelle's Place, the Women's Breast Cancer Resource Center, will host Kids Konnected, a support group for children 5 to 18 who have a parent with cancer, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Breast cancer treatment topic of talk
MURRIETA ---- Dr. Tara Washington will talk about radiation treatments for breast cancer patients during a free seminar at 7 p.m. Thursday at Michelle's Place, Breast Cancer Resource Center.
Washington is a board certified radiation oncologist practicing at Vantage Radiation Oncology centers in Wildomar and Temecula. She has experience in the use of partial breast irradiation and gamma knife radiosurgery.

Chronic pain group meets

Summer reading programs continue
MURRIETA ---- Young adults are invited to participate in Sports Wii and Snacks, at 4 p.m. Monday as part of the summer reading program at Murrieta Public Library.
Those 14 to 18 can compete in games such as boxing, tennis and bowling on the Nintendo Wii video game system.
When the kids leave, adults take over the Wii at 6 p.m. Monday to play games such as tennis and baseball.

YMCA plans book fair
TEMECULA ---- The Southwest Family YMCA will hold book fair July 12 to 18 at Barnes & Noble.
The store will donate 10 percent of purchases to the organization from those who mention Southwest Family YMCA when they are paying.
There also will be a family night at the store with crafts, readings and refreshments from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday July 16.

Music society tickets on sale
TEMECULA ---- The deadline to receive a bonus concert with the purchase of season tickets for the Golden Valley Music Society's 2008-09 series is July 15.
The season includes 10 performances at the Old Town Temecula Community Theater . The California Chamber Orchestra will perform seven of the concerts, featuring the works of classical music legends such as Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven, plus three premieres and a collaboration with the Temecula Valley Master Chorale.
Tickets may be reserved for the Saturday night Seven Concert Season for $130. A Pick Any Five Concert Season package is available for $95. Season ticket purchases include a bonus CD and a mini-flashlight, handy for viewing concert programs during a performance.
Individual tickets for Saturday night performances are $30 general admission, $25 senior, $12.50 student and $2.50 ages 12 and younger. The two Sunday concerts are priced at $25 general admission and $15 seniors.

More than 60 vendors participate each year. Only quality hand-crafted items are accepted. A book and bake sale also will be featured, and a continental breakfast and lunch will be available.
All proceeds are used to assist local community mission projects.

PETS
Animal Friends offer summer camp
LAKE ELSINORE ---- Animal Friends of the Valleys' Furry Friends Kids' Camp will offer two more weekly sessions, starting Monday and July 21.
At the camp, children ages 7 to 13 will learn basic pet care and responsibility, bite prevention, how to be safe around animals, and the importance of controlling the pet population. They will have the opportunity to work with, brush and walk an animal at the shelter, and will interact with a dog by teaching basic commands.
The camp will be taught by AFV's Humane Educator Leslie Kegley.
The camp is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the AFV shelter, 29001 Bastron St., Lake Elsinore. The cost is $50.

Animal Friends plans fundraiser
LAKE ELSINORE ---- Animal Friends of the Valleys will hold its annual Wines for Canines fundraiser from 1 to 4 p.m. July 20 at Wilson Creek Winery.
The event will include wine, lunch, music, a pet fashion show, pet adoptions and auctions.
