Provide more, not less public transit
Those who attended the North County Transit District budget meeting June 19 should have known beforehand that the budget, route cuts and layoffs were a done deal before they arrived, especially the union that represents the drivers, who are next up under the ax in North County Transit District's "ritual sacrifice to the gods of mismanagement." Apparently they did not. It's unconscionable to cut service and lay off drivers when an increase of service and more drivers should be on their agenda.
As the economy is poised to take a gainer into the commode, NCTD is there to give that little extra push by denying the public a viable means of getting to and from work and other places while raising fares. Solution: Get state authorization to suspend all capital projects, except for upkeep and maintenance, and use the money to fund public transit, which is supposed to be their Job One. If that proves to be insufficient, then they need to liquidate the millions in property that they own countywide and use the money to provide transit for the public! Note to board members: The company's name is North County Transit District, not North County Real Estate Development and Venture Capital.

Drilling is not the answer
I am writing in response to the article,"President Bush proposes offshore oil drilling," June 19. I can honestly say that Reps. Darrell Issa and Brian Bilbray should be embarrassed for flip-flopping on the issue of offshore drilling. As a citizen of San Diego County, I would hope that our local government would look for better solutions to our oil crisis than destroying one of the most beautiful coastlines in the country.
It's time for our government to stop supporting last-ditch efforts to keep prices at the pump low, and support real solutions to our climate crisis. Our reps should be looking to clean, renewable energy standards (wind and solar), upping the mile/gallon standard and calling for caps on greenhouse gases from industry.

A joke on the American people
The central facts are that John Warner is an ardent supporter of Joe Lieberman, who is an ardent supporter of John McCain. The cap and trade system will ration carbon emissions. The U.N. World Meteorological organization, manipulators of climate change, says global temperatures have not risen in a decade. Government, eager to expand its grip on the governed and their wealth, manufactures hysteria as an excuse for doing so.
With this cap and trade of current emissions, the current value of all permits will be $7 trillion more. It would go to a climate change credit corp., which Leiberman calls a public-private entity operating outside the budgeting process, aka socialism on a grand scale. People were frustrated –– now they are very angry. This government is destroying their livelihood, and we will fight for our families.

What is Bush doing about this?
What is Bush doing about it? At this writing, we are slaves to yet another record surge in oil prices because of a comment by an oil cartel official, a member of a conglomerate that admittedly does not like us. That is in addition to many, many failed economic policies and inaction (oh, yeah –– blame the Democrats) from the Bush administration that have resulted in higher prices for virtually everything we consume. Remember the ongoing ethanol fiasco?
Ultimately, the president must be responsible. So I ask again –– what is Bush doing about it?

Driving rules remain the same
Did someone change the driving rules regarding left turns? Somehow, I missed that memo.
Scenario: I am the second vehicle in the left-turn lane to go south on Centre City Parkway off Grand Avenue. Across the intersection are cars in each of the lanes heading east on Grand. The light turns green, and the car in front of me proceeds to make the left without any regard for the vehicles coming in the opposite direction, bringing all three to a stop in the middle of the intersection.
The woman making the left was visibly upset (as demonstrated by her gesturing and shouting) that the two cars had entered the intersection, even though she had failed to yield to them. The two drivers with the right of way had to stop to avoid colliding with her vehicle.
Last time I checked the California drivers manual, left turns yield to oncoming traffic, unless there is a green arrow, which allows a protected turn. I might add that this was not an isolated incident, but is something I have observed many times in the past few months.

Whose quality of life will be improved?
Democrat Christine Kehoe has now introduced a new 1/2 percent increase in sales tax known as the Quality of Life Tax ("'Quality of Life' bill heads to governor," June 27). If taking more money out of our pockets will increase our quality of life, we all ought to be rich and living in the lap of luxury.
With gas prices nearing $5 a gallon, groceries, utilities and everyday necessities such as medicines on the rise, I don't know if I can stand my quality of life improving any more. ...
Every election there are ballot issues that get passed to improve our quality of life, such as clean water initiatives. With all these bills that have passed, we should have crystal-clear water. Wake up, people, they don't use the money they get now for what it was supposed to be used for. They spend it wherever they feel like it. The only quality of life that gets improved is the companies that lobby for this money and the outstanding politicians in California we have put in office.
I think I will try to suffer with the quality of life I have now and forgo voting in another happy tax for the California politicians to waste.

His aims are transparent
I want to thank Mr. Chris Pulse (Letters, June 18) advising me to "arm myself." If he and his ... group ever take over this country, I will indeed need it, and so will every other Jew.
In his diatribe, he omits (as usual) that the "driven-out Palestinians" were asked to stay and have a better life alongside of the Jews. They chose to leave.
Chris should put his whip down. His constant attacks on Israel are getting predictable and boring. We Jews know exactly what his transparent aims are.

Will of the people
I have a suggestion to all of the writers who are opposed to gay marriage. Quit using the term the "will of the people" when you refer to the original initiative to outlaw gay marriage. Please be honest and use instead, "the will of the Christians." This is far more honest. We have a country that can protect us from religious tyranny. There was once a time in this country when the vast majority of the population supported slavery. That also was the "will of the people." So get over it.

Time to tell the truth about vaccines
On June 4, I attended the Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey "Green our Vaccines" rally in Washington, D.C. I marched for my vaccine-injured son, Austin, with over 8,500 parents and families. From the Washington Monument, we marched on Independence Avenue to the steps of the Capitol to ask our elected leaders to stop representing the vaccine makers and represent the chronically ill children with vaccine injuries.
We continue to be told that the mercury is out, but check the FDA's Web site. There are still numerous vaccines with a full 25 micrograms of mercury. Science agrees that all mercury is a neurotoxin poison, even trace amounts.
The CDC, FDA and the AAP continue to ignore the pleas of parents to look at vaccine safety. Tests on toxins in vaccines and combining of multiple vaccines on the same day have never been done. It is time to stand up and hold our elected officials accountable. It's time to tell the truth to parents about what is in vaccines. ... Please stop using fear-mongering to get people to vaccinate and make the pharmaceutical companies rich and our children sick.

District the one causing the tension
Saturday's article regarding Vista Unified School site councils has a misleading headline: "District works to ease tensions over site money," June 28. The district is creating the tensions! They are not following state guidelines set out by the educational codes on procedures for spending "categorical" funds. The guidelines are not suggestions. Their suggested policy changes would give the board and the superintendent power over and above those guidelines. That power is intended to rest with the sites. ...
Neither the board nor the superintendent is at liberty to take categorical money (such as Title I or state grants) and dictate its expenditure. To say that they "compromised" when giving Casita $35,000 back to spend as it wished is ludicrous. School site councils create budgets that need to be approved by the board and superintendent. They can be disapproved only for compelling reasons, i.e. noncompliance with state guidelines. They cannot be disapproved because they wish to spend the money on something else. When the district administration spends $150,000 (not $115,000) to subcontract summer school to a private company (Lindamood Bell) when it could have conducted summer school ... using district teachers, one questions their judgment and motives.

I'm not sure why but from my perspective, drivers in general are getting worse at it and are more of a danger to others than I've ever seen. I've had a driver's license for 35 years and it is no wonder that vehicle accidents are so high on the list for killing people.
It's so dangerous when drivers get this visible adrenalin rush which is caused by anger and ends up with retaliation or adrenalin that causes erratic driving like racing on the freeway or tail gating someone because of a perceived, going too slow. Some foks think the road was built for their standard of driving and everyone else is wrong.
KUSI has it right, Phil Constantine the traffic reporter each morning gives out one traffic rule to abide by from the Ca drivers handbook. Every news station should do this since driving a car or truck is like driving a 3000 lb weapon if we have the wrong attitude while behind the wheel.
The DMV should add to it's licensing program a brief anger management class to show drivers how and why they should control their adrenalin rushes while behind the wheel.
My daughters highschool has an awesome program that brings in law enforcement and has a program showing the students the horrible affects of drunk driving. It is quite graphic and has really made an impact on my teen. Good job RBVH.

Are we discussing Democrat Chris Dodd, chairman of the Senate Banking committee with oversight of Countrywide, who gave him a sweetheart deal? Or are we discussing Republican Chuck Grassley, who nearly single-handedly gave us this albatross of Ethanol?
A little history...
Ever since FDR decided that the Government shall be a major force in the economy of the United States, thru a distorted version of Keynesian economics and massive regulations, businesses have had to go to this Government, hat in hand, to beg & bribe career minded politicians for favors.
The Founders never envisioned a welfate state, corporate or otherwise.
What has happened is, Leftists, and socialists have made certain that no business can operate independent of Government, throughly corrupting the marketplace.
You infer by your remarks, that you only observe for-profit's doing this. How wrong you are. If you've ever been to Washington D.C., you'll note the streets are lined with plenty of non-profits, all seeking to feed on the government teat, as well. In fact, it is a feeding fenzy. At the same time, we have devolved into some kind of distorted mechantile state, where thru the power of government, for-profits and non-profits seek to game their opposition out of business via government taxation or regulation.
Since Government will not allow businesses to operate independently, most go to seek advantage.
This is a direct result of corruption of the marketplace by an overly intrusive government.
Ron wrote on Jul 4, 2008 10:33 AM:Also, "Question for Ron" @9:12 AM.
When you say: "When American oil companies persuade the government to start wars..."
First of all, I reject your assertion. But, let's say it's true for argument sake. Can we look back in history and see any of our Founders doing this?
Yes, we can. Thomas Jefferson and the Barbary Pirates. Built a Navy, and used mercenaries, no less, to ensure free trade around the world for American businesses.
And obviously, your last remark is concerning me, personally.
I make no apologies for the work I do.
And it's also quite obvious, you do not celebrate success in others.
Perhaps that's the problem? You see success in others, as a reflection of your own non-success? This is the wrong way to judge one's place in life, my friend. Be the "Best", YOU can be, and be happy with that. If your not living up to your own expectations, change it.
Nothing worse in life than a whiner who won't get off the dime. If you want more, get more. Don't lay back and wait for someone to give it to you, cause you will be greatly disappointed. Know what you want, and seek it. When you seek to be the best YOU can be, things will happen for you. I love a quote by Thomas Jefferson, it goes like this:
"It seems, the harder I work, the more luck I have." People get all caught up in I was born into this, and I don't have a chance in life. It's hogwash. Complete baloney. You just gotta want it bad enough, as my Dad used to say: "You gotta have "want to."
If you want to live a drone life, then you'll live a drone life. Don't count on having any extra's. Because you chose to have a drone's wage. It's really that simple.

What about that do you not understand? The short answer is: It wasn't necessary. Except to provide cover to a disfunctional government that wouldn't allow already existing agencies to talk to one another because of make believe "Wall" created during the Clinton Administration.

He writes: "Over 4,000 people have died. For what?" For a number or Reasons, that's what. Since 1790 the United States has engaged in hundreds of mini-wars without congressional approval for many reasons. In this case the Congress of the United States willingly approved the use of force in Iraq to throwe out the government which was the official position of thsic ountry the minute PRESIDENT W. Then he writes: "Thankful we can have guns. Thankful that homosexuals (about 20% of the USA population) are equal in California." THIS IS PARTICULARLY FALSE-- SCIENTIFIC STUDIES INDEPENDENTLY CONDUCTED HERE AND IN FRANCE CONCLUDE THAT THE HOMOSEXUAL POPULATION IS ABOUT 2 PERCENT OF THE AMERICAN AND FRENCH POPULATIONS, NOT 20 PERCENT. Question for Ron PS wrote on Jul 4, 2008 10:58 AM:Once again, a conservative makes the preposterous assumption (as has been pointed out here many times, by many people) that all liberals are "drones", or waiting for freebies, or sucking at the teat of the government. Once again, though it seems pointless, I will remind Ron and others that this is false. I am doing quite well, thank you, in work in which I am rather independent. I get no handouts from the government to replace hard work. And yet, like so many others, I am thoroughly liberal. I know: you will think it foolish or insane to vote "against my best interests". But, again, the reminder: not all self-interest is measured in dollars or personal power. My notion of the good life includes others having a chance. Sure, some game the system. But this is true, as you showed yourself and even defended, all across the political spectrum. Would I rather my taxes go to help save homeless kids or to inflate a military budget so you can sail? That's an easy one, isn't it? Would I rather pay NO taxes so that we can return to the Gilded Age of tenements and child labor and unregulated foodstuffs? That's an easy one too. And though a liberal, I am certainly not a socialist. As I said, I work hard, am successful, and am very suspicious of the government (including the military sector). This probably fails to fit the straw stereotypes you're positive you're more clever than, but oh well, reality will do that sometimes.

The things he said about John Kerry were true as were almost all of the Swift Boaters charges. Remember New Years Eve in Cambodia, a trip Kerry says was “seared” in his mind.
As for General Clarks comments last week, essentially they were true. In a vacuum being a Naval officer by itself is not a qualification for President today any more than it was when JFK ran as a Naval Reserve war hero because he lost his command, a boat.
Outside a vacuum, however, being a career naval officer qualifies one to be President and Commander-in-Chief when the opponent's only "service" to the country is as a communist-trained (Saul Alinsky's organization) "community organizer" in Chicago.
