Former Chargers safety Terrence Kiel was killed after he was thrown from a car he was driving in Scripps Ranch. File photo. SAN DIEGO ---- Former Chargers safety Terrence Kiel was killed after he was thrown from a Chevy sedan he was driving, police said Saturday.
Kiel, 27, was driving alone after leaving a party at about 10:15 Friday night when he hit a wall in a Scripps Ranch neighborhood and was thrown from the car, police Sgt. Alan Hayward said.
Kiel was barely breathing when paramedics reached him and he died about an hour later, Hayward said.
Friends had tried to keep Kiel from driving home from the party, Hayward said, and witnesses told police he appeared to be driving in the wrong direction when he crashed.
Police would not know whether Kiel had been under the influence of drugs or alcohol until toxicology tests were performed, Hayward said.
A second-round draft pick out of Texas A&M in 2003, Kiel played four years in the NFL from 2003-2006, all with the Chargers.
In February 2007 he pleaded guilty to felony and misdemeanor drug charges for shipping prescription cough syrup to Texas, the most significant of several scrapes with the law.
He was released by the team after his plea and wasn't signed by another club last season.
Kiel had been led off the practice field and arrested in the locker room by Drug Enforcement Administration agents in September 2006, suspected of shipping at least two parcels of prescription cough syrup, apparently to be mixed with soft drinks to make a concoction known as "lean."
The felony charges were later dropped after he completed community service, and he was serving three years probation for the misdemeanor charges.
He was cited for urinating in public outside a San Diego nightclub in January 2007, but the city dropped that charge.

Tragic wrote on Jul 6, 2008 3:51 PM:Such a tragic event for such a young star. As a Charger fan and a fan of football, Terrence Kiel was part of the charger communtiy long enough for me to follow him as a player. And to hear of something like this, is just terrible. Plus not to mention Such a misdemeanor charge he was held from the NFL. Not to bring any other player down but there is many other players that have done far worse and are able to still play in the NFL. And im not goin to name anyone. But R.I.P Terrence
Sam wrote on Jul 6, 2008 5:32 PM:He was not held out of the NFL for his cough syrup charge...the Chargers just cut him and they were right to do so. The NFL did not suspend him, this was pre-Goodell. I feel bad for the kid because from what I understand that whole incident was the fault of one of his Hanger On's who used Kiel's credit card etc...so it all traced back to Kiel. I heard he was on his way back to the league maybe with Tampa and a couple of others.
The fact is all this probably wouldn't have come down if his hanger on didn't screw him over...
Note to Pro Athletes...cut your baggage...if they can't make their own way chances are they're losers and at some point they are gonna bring you down.
RIP Kiel...should've never went down like this....

Oh, how this news deeply saddens us. Words cannot express how shocked & hurt we are over loosing you, my friend ... & of all days, why again, on the fourth of July? Oh why?
My son, William, is devastated ... I know he'll continue to play semi-pro ball wearing your number all the more proudly just as he did when he first began to follow your career years ago. You were a great mentor ... he loves ya, man ... we all do!
My family has great memories enjoying watching you play, & hanging with you off the field. We were really looking forward to seeing you happy & playing again, TK ... we would have followed you anywhere!
“WE LOVE YOU, TK!” it's what I always yelled at you when you were on the field & off ... it's what I'll keep saying in my heart each time I pray for you & your family.
Your humble spirit & gorgeous bright smile always touched our hearts ... forever you’ll be in our hearts & remembered as a most humbled, kind & gentle spoken man. Thank you for all you gave of yourself ... to us & to others!
We'll treasure your memory & look to the day we meet again! Oh, how we will forever miss you, TK!
