One of the advantages of living in Southwest County, is all the free entertainment offered during the summer months.

From movies to concerts, there is plenty of entertainment that won't cost more than the price of of gas. OK, getting there and back isn't exactly free, but the fun certainly is.

Some of the activities have already begun, but the bulk get under way this week.

Three popular activities begin in Temecula, the Summer Sunsets Concert Series, Summer Moonlight Movies in the Park and Hot Summer Nights.

The concert series is held Thursday nights in July and August at the Temecula Amphitheater at the Community Recreation Center, 30875 Rancho Vista Road. Concerts begin at 7 p.m. For information, call 694-6480 or visit cityoftemecula.org.

Summer Moonlight Movies in the Park are held Friday evenings in July and August at various park sites within the city. Festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. with children's crafts and games. Movies begin at dusk. Bring a blanket or low back lawn chair. Refreshments will be available for purchase.

Interfaith Council gets new home

MURRIETA ---- The Interfaith Council of Murrieta and Temecula Valley will have its monthly meeting at a new location at noon Thursday.

Dawn Adamiak, from Temecula's Community Services department, will address the topic of faith-based groups and cities working together.

Participants are encouraged to bring their lunch to 41870 Kalmia St., No. 155.

DAR to host application workshop

TEMECULA ---- A free workshop to assist anyone interested in qualifying for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at Temecula Public Library.

Membership is open to women 18 and older who can prove lineal descent from a person who fought in the Revolutionary War or aided the cause in some other manner.

Participants at the workshop will learn how to determine eligibility, about online resources and how to complete application papers. Ongoing support will be available after the class has been attended. There will be a $2.50 materials charge.

The workshop, which is hosted by the Monserate Chapter of the DAR, will be held in the Heritage Room at the library, 30600 Pauba Road,.

Dressmaker to address history group

TEMECULA ---- Dressmaker Tifeni Whittington will speak when the Temecula Valley Historical Society meets at noon Friday.

Temecula Valley Car Club meets

Employees group to hold annual picnic

SUN CITY ---- The Southwest Riverside County Chapter of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association will hold its annual picnic at noon Monday at the Sun City Civic Association complex.

Republican Congress members Mary Bono Mack and Darrell Issa have been invited to speak, as have their challengers in the November election, Democrats Julie Bornstein and Robert Hamilton.

The goal of NARFE is to protect retirement benefits of federal workers, their spouses, survivors and families.

Online libraries topic of talk

TEMECULA ---- Alan Jones will speak about free online libraries when the Temecula Valley Genealogical Society meets from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. Monday at the Temecula Library.

Jones will talk about new resources that are coming online via public and private libraries and the Library of Congress.

The meeting will be preceded by a genealogy class at 5:30 p.m. Wayne Rogers, from the Riverside Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, will present a lineage research workshop.

Sunrise Rotary to hear speakers

TEMECULA ---- Temecula Mayor Mike Naggar will be the speaker when the Temecula Sunrise Rotary Club meets at 7 a.m. Tuesday at Marie Callender's.

On July 29, the club will hear about Safety Town, a week-long interactive program designed to teach 5-to-7-year-olds various aspects of safety, which the club hosts annually.

Morning and afternoon sessions for Safety Town will be offered July 21 to 25 and July 28 to Aug. 1 at New Covenant Fellowship in Murrieta. Times are 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m.

The price is $25 for the first child and $20 for each sibling, if registered by Tuesday.

The program offers a learning environment that is set up as a little town with buildings, pedal cars and street lights, simulating an actual town. Children are taught about safety principles and then placed in staged situations involving stranger safety, street safety, fire safety, bike safety and water safety.

Author to address group

TEMECULA ---- Richard Hayes Phillips, author of "Witness to a Crime: A Citizens' Audit of an American Election," will speak when Citizens for Democracy meet July 16 at the Mary Phillips Senior Center. A reception for the author will begin at 6:15 p.m. and the program starts at 6:45.

Phillips conducted an audit of the Ohio 2004 presidential election, and after analyzing more than 126,000 ballots and 127 poll books, he said he found inexplicable irregularities in the reported election results.

Citizens for Democracy is a grassroots, nonpartisan organization dedicated to enhancing the democratic process.

Women's Connection plans fashion show

TEMECULA ----- "Hot off the Rack," a fashion show, will be the highlight of the Temecula Valley Women's Connection monthly luncheon at 11:30 a.m. July 16 at Pat and Oscar's.

SUN CITY ---- Freelance journalist Charles Wiley will to speak when Riverside County United Communities meets July 19. Breakfast is at 8:30 a.m. and Wiley will speak at 9:30.

Wiley, who has spoken to groups aground the world, will talk about the power of the media and news bias.

Grape Stompers plan dance

TEMECULA ---- The Grape Stompers Square Dance Club will hold its "I Scream For Ice Cream" dance July 19 at the Temecula Community Center.

Lions receive donation

MURRIETA ---- Sue Ethridge, manager of the vision department at Wal-Mart in Murrieta, recently presented $1,000 to Murrieta Lions Club to be used for a variety of Lions Club sponsored programs designed to assist the visually impaired.

Wal-Mart also has been a major contributor to the Murrieta Lions Club annual White Cane Days, with those funds also going to Sight First and other vision support programs.

Elks collecting donations

LAKE ELSINORE ---- The Lake Elsinore Elks are seeking donations for their annual Christmas Tree Lane.

The Dec. 6 event is the club's largest annual fundraiser, with proceeds going to scholarship.

Themed trees are decorated to be worth $1,000 each, then are raffled off.

Learn to dance, then show your moves

TEMECULA ---- Dance classes in salsa will begin Wednesday at the Temecula Community Center.

Classes will be offered 7:15 to 8:45 p.m. Wednesday and Thursdays for four weeks. The cost is $28. Singles and couples are welcome.

A ballroom dance will be held from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Temecula Community Center.

Dancing will be to waltz, foxtrot, swing and Latin music from disc jockey John Irwin.

Youth soccer camp offered

LAKE ELSINORE ---- A soccer camp for children new to the sport will be offered in two sessions at Creekside Park.

Camps will be held Monday to July 17 and Aug. 4 to 7.

The times are 9 to 9:45 a.m. for ages 3 to 5 and 10 to 10:45 p.m. for ages 6 to 8. The cost is $40.

Dinner, auction to benefit church

WINCHESTER ---- A Polynesian event to benefit Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church will be held July 19 at Monteleone Meadows in Murrieta.

Proceeds from "An Evening in Paradise" will go to the building fund of the newest Catholic church in the Inland area.

The second annual fundraiser will feature entertainment, silent and live auctions and raffles. The cost is $40 per person.
