PREP BASEBALL: Dickerson, Cerda headline All-State contingent

Alex Dickerson, who helped lead Poway High to the CIF San Diego Section Division I baseball championship, and Matt Cerda, the section player of the year from Oceanside, were named first-team All-State by Cal-Hi Sports on Thursday.

Cerda batted .519 with 16 home runs, 46 RBIs and 53 runs scored for the Pirates this spring. He was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the fourth round of Major League Baseball's amateur draft and signed with the Cubs, spurning a scholarship offer from the University of San Diego.

Dickerson, an outfielder was drafted in the 48th round by the Washington Nationals, will attend Indiana University in the fall. He hit .455 with eight homers, 46 RBIs and 13 doubles and scored 42 runs for the Titans.

Ryan O'Sullivan of Valhalla, a 10th-round draft pick of the Giants, was also a first-team All-State pick.

Ramona pitcher Cole Sulser, who was 12-1 with a 1.43 ERA and 132 strikeouts in 93 innings, was named to the second team, along with Fallbrook first baseman Clark Murphy and Torrey Pines infielder Kevin Vance.

Murphy hit .455 with 12 home runs and 25 RBIs. He also drew 30 walks, stole 14 bases and had a .625 on-base percentage for the Warriors. He will play at UCLA next year unless he signs with the Texas Rangers ---- who drafted him in the fifth round of June's draft ---- by Aug. 15.

Vance hit .419 with eight homes and 26 RBIs for the Falcons. Sulser will play at Dartmouth next season.

Outfielders Brian Humphries of Granite Hills and Brandon Meredith of Montgomery were also named to the second team.

Cathedral Catholic had two players ---- catcher Chris Wilson and outfielder Matt Moynihan ---- named to the Medium Schools All-State team. Wilson hit .398 with 10 homers and 46 RBIs, while Moynihan batted .400 with 22 RBIs, 39 runs scored and 26 stolen bases.

Pitcher Miles Reagan of El Capitan and outfielder David Popkins of St. Augustine also made the Medium Schools team.

Moynihan and Cathedral Catholic teammate Parker Hipp were named first-team All-State Underclassmen. Hipp, an infielder, hit .457 with a homer and 28 RBIs.

Pitcher Levi Stevens of Grossmont also was named to the first team. Pitcher/outfielder Steven Packard of Mission Hills, outfielder Brett Thomas of Poway and utilityman Casey Husband of Cathedral Catholic were second teamers.

Packard, a junior, hit .473 with a pair of homers and 37 RBIs and was 6-2 as a pitcher. Husband, a junior, hit .413 with nine homers and 40 RBIs. Thomas, a sophomore, hit .412 with two homers, 26 RBIs and 41 runs scored.
