OCEANSIDE ---- Sailors found the seas to their liking Saturday in the Oceanside Yacht Club's sixth annual Elizabeth Hospice Charity Regatta.

"The winds were perfect, the seas were very flat," said Serocco skipper Lee Pryor.

Added Ted Langs, a crew member aboard Pryor's boat: "The wind was fabulous today. We had about 16 to 17 boats out there. All are top-notched competitors. There was some really good racing out there today."

Spectators were able to catch all of the racing action from the Oceanside Municipal Pier.

The Oceanside Yacht Club's three-day event, which winds up Sunday, is expected to raise $50,000 for the hospice foundation, which provides medical and emotional care for terminally ill patients who wish to die in their homes or residential facilities.

"It's a really good cause, because everybody faces some tough times when a family member is at the end of life," Pryor said.

The boats, which set sail from Oceanside Harbor, ranged in size from 25 to 45 feet. Crews came from as far away as Dana Point and Newport Beach to compete for bragging rights. The winner will be announced Sunday.

Elizabeth Hospice spokeswoman Lisa Marcolongo said that the regatta has helped raise awareness about hospice care throughout the coastal cities of San Diego County. She said that many people don't know much about the hospice and what it provides until they're facing a medical crisis.

"We want to make people aware before they get to that point," she said.
