VISTA: Escondido boy dies in Highway 78 accident

VISTA ---- An 8-year-old Oceanside boy died Saturday after his family's car lost control on Highway 78.

The county medical examiner's office identified the boy as Daniel Alguera.

About 4:20 p.m., the child's grandmother, visiting from Canada, was driving west on the freeway in a sedan with four passengers, including the boy's mother and two siblings, when a rear tire blew out near Emerald Drive, Highway Patrol Officer Brad Denham said.

She lost control of the car, veered off the freeway and crashed through a chain-link fence bordering the off-ramp, he said. The 8-year-old was ejected from the back seat in the crash, Denham said.

The boy was rushed to Tri-City Medical Center, where attempts to stabilize him were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at 6:06 p.m., Denham said.

The rest of the family suffered minor injuries.

Daniel was a very nice boy and I was looking forward to him being my student.

My condolences to the Alguera family, and I hope you can eventually overcome this tragedy and remember how special Daniel was.
