John McCain will speak to the group Monday. (Photo by Don Boomer - Staff Photographer) SAN DIEGO ---- Sen. Barack Obama told a crowd of more than 2,000 Latinos on Sunday that comprehensive immigration reform would be a top priority if he wins the presidency in November.
The Illinois Democrat also suggested that Latino voters hold the keys to the White House.
"You hold this election in your hands," he said.
Obama received several standing ovations during his half-hour speech before the National Council of La Raza at the San Diego Convention Center.
The loudest cheers came when he criticized enforcement efforts such as immigration raids.
"When nursing mothers are torn from their babies, when children come home from school to find their parents missing, when people are detained without access to legal counsel, when all that is happening, the system just isn't working and we need to change it," Obama said.
Several North County communities are on the frontline of the immigration debate. Escondido, for example, has generated national attention for its failed effort to create an ordinance banning landlords from renting to illegal immigrants.
Local anti-illegal immigration groups such as the San Diego Minutemen also have made headlines for their sidewalk protests against day laborers in various North County communities.
With an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the country, the immigration debate pits those who contend that illegal immigrants are a burden on local governments and those who say they help fuel the country's economic engine.
Obama appeared to address those issues when he called for an end to "hateful rhetoric" against undocumented immigrants and vowed to tackle the issue in his first year as president.
Several North County residents who attended the event said they liked what they heard.
"The message behind his speech was very empowering," said Andres Martin, a high school counselor and president of the Beca Foundation, an Escondido-based organization that gives scholarships to Latino students. "It was a message of change."
Outside the convention center, dozens of San Diego Minutemen and other anti-illegal immigration activists said the group is a racist organization for what they called its "pro-Mexico, pro-amnesty agenda for illegal aliens."
In recent weeks, Obama and Arizona Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, have heavily courted the Latino vote, making speeches at high-profile gatherings such as the League of United Latin American Citizens conference earlier this month.
The campaigns are appealing for the up to 10 million Latinos expected to vote in the presidential election, according to La Raza President Janet Murguia.
Many of those voters live in key swing states such as Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado and Florida.
McCain is scheduled to speak at the La Raza conference Monday.
Both candidates supported a failed immigration reform bill last year that included a plan for legalizing millions of undocumented immigrants.
But they have criticized each other on the issue in recent months.
McCain has charged that Obama was largely absent from bipartisan negotiations to draft the measure.
Obama criticized McCain on Sunday for later withdrawing his support for the bill and instead backing calls for strong border security measures first.
Former U.S. Treasurer Rosario Marin, a prominent Latino McCain supporter, dismissed Obama's criticism during a telephonic news conference Sunday morning.
"The reality is that Senator McCain is the one senator that basically went against his own party, took the standard bearer for immigration reform," Marin said. "I think that needs to be fully recognized. Senator McCain did it at great political peril."
Several recent polls show Obama leading McCain among Latino voters.
However, most Latinos voted for Sen. Hillary Clinton during this year's Democratic presidential primaries.
Ruth Manzano, an Elfin Forest resident who attended Obama's speech, was among those who supported Clinton. She said her ideal presidential ticket would include the New York senator as vice president.
"I think he can make change, but he needs Hillary in the package," Manzano said of Obama. "Hillary has the experience."
In other campaign news, Obama told The Associated Press that he expects to be accompanied on battlefront tours of Iraq and Afghanistan by two fellow senators who are military veterans and potential running mates.
Sens. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., and Jack Reed, D-R.I., are experts on foreign policy, Obama said. Hagel served as an Army sergeant in Vietnam and was twice wounded in 1968, earning two Purple Hearts.
Reed, a West Point graduate, was an Army Ranger and paratrooper.
"They reflect, I think, a traditional bipartisan wisdom when it comes to foreign policy. Neither of them are ideologues but try to get the facts right and make a determination about what's best for U.S. interests ---- and they're good guys," Obama said.
He also said there is "little doubt we've moved into recession" and reiterated a call for second economic stimulus package, steps to shore up the housing market and a long-term energy policy.

anotherview wrote on Jul 14, 2008 12:28 PM:Foremost, illegal aliens have no right to live and work in America. Both Mac and BHO, as lawmakers, must acknowledge this fundamental. Yet, while seeking national office both of these candidates will pander to voters in the Mexican-American community for their support. Meanwhile, ICE under the law must identify and detain illegal aliens (including criminal aliens and fugitive aliens) for their due deportation. This federal law enforcement activity nationwide grows from the principle that good citizens obey the law, and expect others to do the same. Americans rightly take pride in their nation as one of laws. Of course, Mexican-Americans will show a social bias favoring illegal aliens, in part because many of them descend from illegal aliens. Nevertheless, this natural social bias induces a winking at the illegal status of Mexican foreign nationals, ignoring their widespread negative impacts to society. If a citizen puts America first, then this winking at the law amounts to an unpatriotic action, by setting a social bias above the nation’s interests. In turn, by pandering to individuals who actively hold this social bias, both Mac and BHO in effect applaud its inherent lack of patriotism, while also themselves winking at its resulting negative outcomes. Hence, the simple question presents itself: Once in office, will the winner of the election continue pandering to a social bias or instead uphold and enforce the laws of the land regarding immigration? The Bush II administration finally began enforcing federal immigration law about a year ago. This enforcement aims to stop the hiring of illegal aliens and to remove illegal aliens from the country. Will the next president follow this lead?

But I wonder why La Raza does not call for MEChA to rename itself and denounce and repeal its Plan Espiritual de Aztlán, which reveals that organization's racist and separatist beginnings. Helping kids get into to college is admirable, but leaving that radical racist and separatist rhetoric out there is offensive to what America stands for. MEChA still clings to its Plan Espiritual de Aztlán as part of its heritage as if it is harmless. How about it, La Raza?

"La Raza" (The Race) is a broad term which refers to those whose ancestry is indigenous to the area of Mexico (or "Aztlan"). MEChA members refer to themselves as "La Raza" or "Raza," but the term itself is used to indicate camaraderie among those in different organizations with the same objectives. There are a number of organizations who consider themselves to be La Raza".
