OCEANSIDE ---- A fire broke out in the attic of a coin-operated laundry Friday afternoon and has caused the evacuation of at least nine businesses in a strip mall that includes Albertsons grocery store, fire officials said. No injuries have been reported, said police spokesman Sgt. Kelan Poorman.

The fire was reported at 3:10 p.m. and flames and heavy smoke were seen coming through the roof of the business, at 3935 Mission Ave., a block east of the intersection with El Camino Road, Poorman said.

Firefighters were cutting a hole in the roof of the laundry to improve access to the fire, he said. It appeared the firefighters were going to be able to contain the fire and prevent its spread, Poorman said. At least 12 fire engines from Carlsbad and Oceanside are on scene, the sergeant said.

No further information was available.

My son works at Albertsons and when I saw the fire driving home from work I went into stress mode knowing my son was there. The police did and outstanding job directing traffic and all the fire departments acted quickly. Thank you.
