LAKE ELSINORE: Councilman's car one of two destroyed by early morning fire

Fire officials are investigating the cause of the blazes

LAKE ELSINORE ---- Two vehicles were destroyed by fire early Monday morning, including a car belonging to Lake Elsinore City Councilman Thomas Buckley.

Buckley said he heard two pops outside his home about 1 a.m., then looked out a window to see his Mercedes-Benz and a neighbor's Ford Ranger truck engulfed in flames.

"It could have been random. I really hope it's not city-related," Buckley said about the cause of the fires.

Fire officials were still investigating the fires and were unable to confirm whether they were intentionally set, said Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Massiel De Guevara.

But Buckley said it appears the fires were ignited on purpose. He said the two vehicles were parked about 15 feet apart and there did not appear to be any signs to indicate that flames from one of the vehicles ignited the other.

"I have no idea why this happened," Buckley said. "I haven't received any threats or anything like that."

Buckley, who was first elected to the City Council in 2001, said that, if it turns out to be arson, he so far has been unable to think of any specific council-related issue that might have led to him becoming a target.

Firefighters received a call reporting the fires at 1:10 a.m. in the 17000 block of Ryan Avenue, near Manning Street.

Setting a car on fire is extremely dangerous and could have resulted in deaths if noises did not awaken the councilman and neighbor. This is a mob type crime,or something someone with criminal experience would attempt not your average Joe. Mr. Buckley is a good person who has improved our city. If this was done on purpose I hope he fights back in full force, no room for fear thats what a bully law breaker counts on.

Very Aware wrote on Jul 21, 2008 11:48 PM:If someone decides they are going to torch my car and put my family in harms way you better not get noticed by me when your doing it because I will fight back and you will pay an awful price for your action, either in the courts when they catch you, or with my own protection which I legally own and will use. I am an expert markman and haven't used it for a while, but if I have to I will. My ribbon is white, I never understood why a marksman received a white ribbon, my aim and eyesight are jsut as good today as they were then, and the arms are have are very sufficient.

To BOB:
Thats not just Lake Elsinore. You must live in Murrimecula, the two cities that are sooooo safe but, the same non the less. Population, Mortgage brokers, real estate agents, used car salesmen, and the like. Crime from a different perspective.

I like Lake Elsinore but I have to admit that this doesn't come as a surprise to me. Maybe the city should open up a monitored area where kids can openly graffiti and express themselves in a POSITIVE way.

what goes around comes around wrote on Jul 22, 2008 2:43 PM:The City Hired a Guy in the Past to Install campain signs and shoot at peoples Homes and Familys, as well as fires in peoples yards, and destroy properties , so the city would buldoze it ,then a city official would buy it. The L.E cops would do nothing ,due to the city connections, in the 1980-1989. He Drove a lime green truck.
What went around in the past has returned full circle. In the old days
This is how the city operated in the old days, to get people to leave town. I dont think its the Kids, good try on changing the subject. My family was a victim of this, in the past

years. This is gone on ever since I've
been here. I'm surprised they did't try to flood him out like the city does.

its true wrote on Jul 22, 2008 4:07 PM:Bob , thanks for your comment. Yes its been going on for the 30+ years Since I have been in town. Thank you for bringing up the fact that the city flooded the town to devalue many elderly peoples homes and land, so they bought almost the whole lake bottom in the 1980s.
Now 20 years Later the Planning Dept
has devalued all the land downtown and along lakeshore. Now they are buying more land with rda money at a steep discount. Only if the landowners have a clue on whats going on.
