Defensive end Luis Castillo signed a contract extenstion Tuesday that will keep him with the Chargers through the 2014 seaosn.

SAN DIEGO ---- The Chargers remain without top pick Antoine Cason, but they secured defensive end Luis Castillo through the 2014 season by signing him to a contract extension on Tuesday.

"Since his arrival, Luis has been played a huge role in the success we've had as a defense," Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said in a statement."He's an ascending player who is committed to getting better. We're thrilled that he'll be a Charger for years to come."

Castillo reports to training camp on Thursday with the balance of the squad as the Chargers' start full-squad workouts on Friday. Currently rookies and select veterans are practicing at Chargers Park.

Although Cason isn't among them as the team continues negotiations with the former University of Arizona star.

Castillo was the second of team's two first-round draft picks in 2005, despite admitting to steroids use in trying to rebound from an injury his senior season at Northwestern. But Castillo, whose original contract was to expire after 2009, has stayed clean and developed into a key player. He's started 33 games for the Chargers and has 13 sacks, including a career-high seven in 2006.

Patrick S wrote on Jul 22, 2008 2:57 PM:Great signing, Castillo is a class act. To correct Sean C., next up should be Rivers, Cromartie, then Merriman, and Olshansky. The Bolts can definitely remain competitive without Merriman and Olshansky, both of whom are EXCELLENT players. Yet we have the best depth at LB of any team in the NFL, Wates, Siler, Tucker and others can easily fill a void left by Merriman. Albeit, not as flashy and as fun to watch as Merriman, they will almost certainly be able to get the job done. I really like what Tucker did in the Raiders game at the end of last season. But Rivers is the franchise QB and Cromartie is superman, you can NOT let those two get away, so, get to work AJ and get their contracts extended. Prove to Cason that it is worth taking a little less now and be rewarded later, then holding out and possibly losing a long NFL career all together.
