LAKE ELSINORE ---- Incumbent City Council member Bob Magee and the chairman of the Public Safety Advisory Commission, Mike Norkin, have been certified as candidates for November's City Council race, the city clerk confirmed this week.

There are three seats available: Magee's seat and the seats that have been occupied by Genie Kelley and Bob Schiffner, both of whom have said they are not seeking re-election.

Magee, 45, has served as mayor three times since his election to the council in 2003. During his time on the council, the executive officer for Forest Wood Fiber Products in Lake Elsinore has voted to boost funding for the police and fire departments while ensuring the city's budget was balanced.

Magee, who moved to the area to work for the city's planning department in the mid-1980s, has been a supporter of the city's "Dream Extreme" branding effort, which seeks to make Lake Elsinore a regional destination for extreme sports fans.

Norkin, 28, runs a photography studio, Cherished Memories, on Graham Avenue. During his time on the commission, Norkin has worked to crack down on graffiti by beefing up penalties and the commission has recommended new rules for lake safety.

Norkin moved to Lake Elsinore six years ago and he serves as the youth services director for the Lake Elsinore Rotary Club, as director on the Chamber of Commerce's executive board and as chairman of the school district's career technology education program.

I have very high standards and admit Im very tough to please, but I have to give Bob Magee credit he has made the right choices even in difficult situations and has on more than one occasion made me proud to live in Lake Elsinore. If your familiar with the old Elsinore beleive me that is quite an accomplishment.

As for the two council members that are finally stepping down, Kelly has done a great deal for this city but we need new blood. This is a resort town with the Lake, Stadium and so much potential, we need a council that's going to show some activity that brings others here instead of one that is always trying to shut down anything that's fun and positive.
