ENCINITAS: Fire marshal says cooking fire sparked blaze

By North County Times | Wednesday, July 23, 2008 6:11 PM PDT

ENCINITAS ---- An 8-acre brush fire that burned near homes Monday in Leucadia was probably started by a fire used for cooking in a migrant camp, an investigator concluded.

Encinitas Fire Marshal Bob Scott said he spent Tuesday and Wednesday morning examining the burned hillside, bordered by Encinitas Ranch Golf Course to the west, Garden View Road to the east and Leucadia Boulevard to the north.

He said burn patterns and other evidence showed that the fire originated in the middle of its northern edge. The area also was marked by the remnants of an abandoned migrant camp, including cookware, Scott said. A cooking fire probably sparked the blaze, he said.

The fire was reported at 1:20 p.m. Monday and was contained about five hours later after firefighters cut brush to form a perimeter around the fire while helicopters and airplanes dropped water on it.

No one was injured and no structures were damaged in the fire.

Can't really blame the illegal aliens, that just wanted a hot breakfast (sarcasm). Can't really blame the Fire Dept, they did a great job putting out the fire. So who can we blame? Let's start with the City Council who knowingly allows illegal aliens to break laws in the city of Encinitas. Let's also blame the SD Sheriff who, again, knowingly allows the lawbreakers to hangout around the city - without much fear of prosecution. And finally, let's blame ourselves, folks. Me, you and everyone else that allows this kind of illegal behavior to continue, unchecked. Fire away with your flame comments folks, but have realize that next time it might be your house, daughter, car, or liberty that is breached by the illegal aliens.

Perhaps then you will become tired of this nonsense...

Grateful wrote on Jul 23, 2008 9:12 PM:Thank you Encinitas firefighters for a great job containing this fire!

Once again wrote on Jul 23, 2008 10:22 PM:They reported the cause of the fire, but reported it as a "migrant camp."

Is that anything like a summer camp?

Can a CITIZEN get a grant to attend a migrant camp?

How much does it cost to attend a migrant camp? (Here's a hint: Whatever it cost to put out this fire!)

Once again, I repeat:

There is obviously no one is to blame, because there is no such thing as borders, right? (Which is why Mexico has a daily parade of military on their border to the south, correct?)

Unfortunately, this fire, like the likely illegal aliens who inadvertently started it, doesn't acknowledge borders either. It is an equal opportunity fire.

And will the cause of the fire, when determined, be reported in this paper if it turns out to be illegal aliens?

God, can you hear the echo from Washington originating from the hollowed out consciences of those we elected to serve? It is maddening.

I'd like some key lime pie before the next civil war breaks out, please. Thank you.

We will have balance wrote on Jul 23, 2008 10:33 PM:We will have balance in the universe when we have enough meat on hand in equal proportion to be be cooked as there are fires started by illegal aliens.

Until then, chaos reigns supreme.

Thanks for the fires, Mexico! Can you send us some cows, so there is at least some useful purpose to these fires your citizens routinely set while breaking our countries laws?

Duh wrote on Jul 24, 2008 5:04 AM:We new all along the cause of this fire had the highest probability of being caused be illegal trespassers.

Apologies Accepted wrote on Jul 24, 2008 7:37 AM:Well, all you posters who assumed the paper wouldn't report the source of the fire if it turned out to be a migrant camp in order to protect some sort of alleged pro-migrant stance can form a line to the right to offer your apologies.

Here we go wrote on Jul 24, 2008 8:40 AM:Let's blame the Mexicans for all our woes. I believe the Nazis did that with the Jews too. They just said "migrant" meaning people that move. It could easily be a "white" homeless camp. Many of the homeless near the beaches are in fact "white". Does that make it okay???

To Here We Go wrote on Jul 24, 2008 9:11 AM:Apparently, you're new to this message board and frankly any newspaper message board. Let me get you up to speed.
Migrants (they like to be called "Illegals" or "Aliens") are to be blamed for everything. I'd post the list here, but it's literally EVERYTHING. We just added brush fires to the list. Happy posting!!

Let me get this straight wrote on Jul 24, 2008 9:26 AM:So if it had been a teenager with a magnifying glass would you call all teenagers criminals, generalize that they all hate America and demand our police keep surveillance over all teenagers moving freely in public and check their papers to prove they were born in the USA?

concerned Independent wrote on Jul 24, 2008 11:31 AM:specific to "Let me get this straight". If it was a teenager or any resident of the U.S., they would be charged & they or their parents would indeed pay for the damage and/or use of the fire department. The chief said, "the area was marked by the remnants of an abandoned migrant camp, including cookware." Sympathy is empathy with emotion. I hope this helps.

To Northcoastnative wrote on Jul 24, 2008 11:57 AM:I agree with you 100-percent. However, I actively oppose illegal immigration and goverments, like Encinitas, who foster it. Some of us believe we are exceptions to the rule that we must blame ourselves for allowing it to happen. If I could find a way tomorrow, I'd remove every government official in Encinitas who, through their inaction, allowed this to happen. Yes, that goes for the Sherrif's department too.

To Let Me Get This Straight wrote on Jul 24, 2008 12:01 PM:The fact is that teenagers ARE subjected to more scrutiny than illegals. That's part of the critics' point...legal residents and citizens are subjected to a higher standard of the law than illegals, who get a free pass. A little TOO sensitive are we?

To concerned Independent wrote on Jul 24, 2008 12:07 PM:Oh I see. So a crime, if committed by a resident, is treated on an individual basis, but if committed by a migrant proves ALL who work, look like, and originate from a similar background can fairly be judged of criminal minds. That explains why it's reasonable for people to assume "criminal" when they see someone who looks like a migrant (and vent their hatred on blogs). There is no such assumption when we see a resident, even though some of them act irresponsibly, we somehow know it would be wrong to think they all do.

Vindication wrote on Jul 24, 2008 12:19 PM:Vindicatin for JJ from Monday's blog (jj [-] wrote on Jul 21, 2008 10:46 PM:) who wrote "Boy .... a lot of you people are going to look mighty stupid when they find out migrants started this fire." Sorry JJ, my money would have been on illegals right beside yours on Monday. I just didn't have time to read the blog until now.

As for all of you bleeding heart bloggers who suggest that we should wait 'til the facts are in, JJ's assumptions were correct and they were correct because he's (we)seen it too many times, not due to falsly ascribed hated. JJ called it right...so take a hike bleeding hearts.

seriously wrote on Jul 24, 2008 1:35 PM:Will you please get over yourselves we are ALL migrants here, think back a few hundred years!

And why don't you find something more useful to do with your time than moan and groan here and run for election so you can "change the world".

Cardiffian wrote on Jul 24, 2008 2:22 PM:OK, now we know a migrant camp was responsible for the fire. Regardless, immigration enforcement is the responsibility of the feds, not the Encinitas City Council, not the Sheriff, not the fire dept., so why do we want to throw those people out? Lack of enforcement of vagrancy codes? Fire codes? Should we go after the landowner because they didn't adequately secure their property against the threat of fire? I shudder to think that our little town of Encinitas would follow in Escondido's steps. They can't get anything done one the "illegal" issue since they don't have any authority or jurisdiction! If all you have is a hammer, all your problems look like nails.

To Seriously wrote on Jul 24, 2008 3:12 PM:Gee...sorry, Seriously. We have a problem and we're trying to solve it. A few hundred years ago we had slaves too. We got wise to that and did away with it. 'Running for election' didn't undo slavery. It took a civil war. Fifty-thousand Americans died in just three days at Gettysburg, and that was just one battle. So, don't oversimplify what it takes for Americans to 'undo' what our elected leaders have wroght on this country.

Jim wrote on Jul 24, 2008 4:34 PM:Well, just another "benefit" we taxpayers receive for having illegal aliens slithering around our country.

Who's gonna pay for all this damage?
The illegal aliens--not a chance-- we don't know who they are or where to find them, they're already at another illegal campsite ready to do more damage.

I sure am glad the USA is safe and secure from criminal foreigners.

Time for a little ICE in the illegal campsites before they burn a whole city up in flames.

Ted wrote on Jul 25, 2008 12:36 AM:Illegals are just that: ILLEGAL! Out of my country. I'm tired of the crime and various problems you bring.

this.... wrote on Jul 25, 2008 7:26 AM:can happen anywhere in the County, "migrant" camps can be located anywhere in the county where there is enough brush and chapparel to hide these "communities", and residents in these areas where they congregate have been complaining for years about the possibility of fires just like what happened in Encinitas. Rancho Penasquitos, Carlsbad, San Marcos, Fallbrook, Valley Center,Vista and Oceanside all have areas where Illegals camp, and the odds of an incident like this occuring again are high, espescially as the fire season goes on and things get drier.
The advocates who argue for the illegals working here won't be paying for the damages to our homes and businesses, nor will they help to pay higher insurance rates we'll pay or do pay because of the effects these un-insured "residents" have after they burn down our homes, cause accidents while driving unliscensed and uninsured, and continue to use our hospital ER.s as government financed "clinics" because they cannot turn away anyone and know that these medical facilities will have to eat the costs < actually pass along the costs to you and I via higher fees for services >.
This will happen again and again until we start enforcing the laws we already have on the books, and go after the employers who the illegal aliens depend on for their incomes...

You cant say "straight" in California, nor can you say "mother and father". It offends the gay racketeers and you may be prosecuted under SB777.

Chuck wrote on Jul 25, 2008 8:15 AM:>>Is a migrant camp a place illegal aliens use?>>

Yes, its a camp and an outhouse all in one. Then they walk down to Home Depot and wait til someone comes by who needs their grass cut or trees trimmed.

Chuck wrote on Jul 25, 2008 8:18 AM:I see Arnold is so desperate for cash, that he wants to tax each bag given out in the grocery store 25 cents. Encinitas burns... wrote on Jul 25, 2008 10:55 AM:America is to blame for this fire. All immigrants should be treated with respect and given clean, safe, affordable (free?) housing.

These poor people pick your food and clean your toilets, while having to live in cardboard boxes. How disgraceful!

o burn wrote on Jul 25, 2008 11:00 AM:us "teenages" in encinitas for a long time know not to play in the bush's since illagals are in them so we never would get the idea to play with matches out in the boonies. of course its a migrant camp that started it!

The Real Crime wrote on Jul 25, 2008 1:47 PM:Encinitas Burns is absolutely right. We don't mind that these people make our lives easier-- we let them clean our houses, mow our lawns, pull our weeds, build our homes, so we can relax, take care of our kids, or work at our much higher paying jobs.

Why, then, do we begrudge them the basic necessities of life, as if after they leave our homes they are less than human?

Tam wrote on Jul 25, 2008 2:21 PM:I don't know who you are but I DO NOT hire illegals to do any of these chores that I do for myself.
These illegals have no business being here, they have no sponsor when they sneak across the border, no place to live, the squat in our bushes, (very unsanitary) and loiter in our streets begging for jobs that are not available.
Work permits are there for those that want to do it correctly.
Your not going to have a family or a house to go home to if the illegal aliens keep sparking up fires.

Cardiffian wrote on Jul 25, 2008 10:15 PM:Tam, you're clueless. The "illegals" have plenty of business being here. They have a sponsor - but not in the traditional sense. If there were no jobs, the "illegals" wouldn't be here. Congrats that you are not adding to the problem, but there are enough who do. Shouldn't they pay the true cost of the cheap labor they are so ready to take advantage of?

To Tam wrote on Jul 26, 2008 8:02 AM:How many homes were burned in this fire? None. Where are all these multitude of fires "they keep sparking up"?

As if sparking the flames of unfounded fear against these poor people weren't enough, you even begrudge them using A BUSH, something you wouldn't think twice about if it were a cat or dog. Have we allowed racism to blind us to our common humanity?
