LOCAL BRIEFS: Calac will speak at Cougar Athletic Club breakfast

Former Escondido High baseball standout Leo Calac will be the guest speaker when the Cougar Athletic Club holds its quarterly breakfast meeting on Aug. 2 at Cocina del Charro restaurant, 525 North Quince St., Escondido.

Calac, a 1938 graduate of Escondido, lettered four years in baseball and was captain of the 1938 Cougars team that won a Metro League championship and advanced to the Southern California playoffs. He served 23 years as business manager and then assistant superintendent of business services at the Escondido Union High School District.

Calac will talk about his playing days at Escondido and the players he played with and against, including Ted Williams and Jackie Robinson.

Fellowship will begin at 8:30 a.m. A buffet breakfast, priced at $11 per person, will be served at 9:15, followed by the program.

McNeal leads U.S.

Sha'Dare McNeal, who will be a senior at Fallbrook High in the fall, had seven kills and four blocks to help the U.S. women's junior national team beat Costa Rica 25-12, 25-14, 25-11 on the second day of the NORCECA Women's Junior Continental Championship at Saltillo, Mexico.

Team USA (1-1) concludes Pool A play on Thursday against Canada (1-0), which played late Wednesday against the Dominican Republic.

The winners of Pool A and Pool B advance to the semifinals on Saturday, while the second-place teams face the third-place teams in crossover quarterfinals on Friday.
