MURRIETA ---- A Temecula man was arrested early Thursday and accused of stabbing, then trying to strangle his girlfriend in her Murrieta home, police said.
David Anthony Pinto, 26, was booked at Southwest Detention Center on suspicion of attempted murder, making criminal threats and assault with a deadly weapon, according to jail records.
About 1 a.m. Thursday, Murrieta police were called to a home on Arboretum Way regarding a stabbing.
Officers found that a 47-year-old woman had been stabbed in the chest, arm, legs and foot, said police Lt. Dennis Vrooman. A wound near the victim's chest was nearly fatal, he said, adding that the woman was hospitalized and was expected to survive.
After stabbing her, the assailant tried to strangle the woman but she feigned being unconscious so the attack would stop, the lieutenant said.
The victim called 911 after the assailant left and told police that she did not know who attacked her or even whether it had been a man or woman, Vrooman said.
Officers heading to the home to investigate saw a man walking on Margarita Road near Torrey Pines Road, just a short distance away.
They stopped the man, but because the woman provided no suspect information and there was no visible physical evidence on him, officers let the man go ---- after identifying him as David Pinto.
Later, while she was at a local hospital, the victim finally told police that it was her boyfriend, David Pinto, who assaulted her, Vrooman said.
She said she was afraid to identify him as first, believing he was still nearby and would hear her conversation during the 911 call or with officers, Vrooman said.
Officers then began searching for Pinto again and found him about 2:50 a.m. walking near Margarita and Moreno roads in Temecula.
Detectives believe Pinto went to the victim's home specifically to kill her, Vrooman said.
Pinto was being held Thursday in lieu of $1 million bail, jail records state.

Uh wrote on Jul 25, 2008 9:02 AM:All the domestic violence and murders up where? Temecula/Murrieta have one of the lowest domestic violence and murder rates per capita in the State of California. Murrieta 6 murders in 10 years, population 100,000. Escondido 9 murders per year, pop. 120,000.
Of course you don't hear about all the murders in SD county because most are committed by non-citizens.
yeah...and of those wrote on Jul 25, 2008 9:22 AM:6 murders (which I believe there have been more) they have all happened in the last two years! And it's going to get worse with all the foreclosures and property values going down.

For very understandable socio-economic reasons, it is a very well known fact that lower income neighborhoods tend to have problems that call for more police protection. The irony is that the same politicians who allowed or caused the growing problem to evolve, then try to make themselves look like good guys by becoming advocates of increasing the size of the police force. That's like someone who starts a fire and then tries to look like a hero by squirting water at it. Whatever the degree our crime problem may be, it is obviously a growing problem. So, let's take a look at the root of that growing problem. Let's look at our city government.

This is not L.A. and with the police protection we have it will never be. Don't blame the city government for domestic violence, blame the people that perpetrate it. It is the person who wants to control another, one who refuses to take no for an answer. I could go on and on. But don't take my word for it. Check it out for yourself. Regarding this particular case, ten to one she wanted to break off the relationship and he wouldn't hear of it. "If I can't have you, no one else will" attitude.
