TEMECULA ---- Educator Kristi Rutz-Robbins filed paperwork Thursday to run for a seat on the Temecula Valley Unified School District's board.
Rutz-Robbins, who earned a doctorate in history, has taught at the University of San Diego and Cal State San Marcos. She ran for the school board in 2006 and placed seventh in a crowded field for three seats.
Rutz-Robbins said in 2006 that she wanted to ensure trustees put children's needs first, establish "effective and respectful" communication, and promote arts, music and physical education.
The four-year terms of Trustees Barbara Tooker and Stewart Morris are set to expire this year. Tooker has said she will not seek re-election. Morris has not said whether he will run again.
Rutz-Robbins is the second person, along with oral surgeon D. Allen Pulsipher, to file for the November race.
Candidates have until Aug. 8 to qualify for the ballot.

You've got my vote.
dont forget wrote on Jul 25, 2008 10:00 AM:there are 2 positions opening. We need to make sure that the incumbent(s) are GONE.
makes me wonder... wrote on Jul 25, 2008 11:17 AM:Why did she lose in the last election?
One opening so far wrote on Jul 25, 2008 12:11 PM:Stu has not made up his mind yet. There is only one position so far. We need to see more people apply and get a wide variety of people without a hidden agenda.
we need wrote on Jul 25, 2008 12:35 PM:to wipe the school board clean and start fresh. The current board has turned this district into a laughing matter. They have lost the respect of their employees, parents and if the kids understood everything that has been going on, they would have lost them too,.
School Board wrote on Jul 25, 2008 1:05 PM:We need to be very careful in the selection process of a school board canidiate(s). The trust factor is gone with all of them. TVUSD school board members made this district for prospective employees, the district NOT to work for. Very sad....

Informed voting will help select the best candidates, rather than random voting & name recognition. Hopefully many will recognize the "status quo," has not been working.
status qou wrote on Jul 25, 2008 7:21 PM:An informed vote to select rather then "status quo" is the answer.
Why Kristi lost in the last election wrote on Jul 26, 2008 10:52 AM:12 people ran for 3 open seats in Nov. of 2006 which split the vote considerably. The 3 that were elected (2 incumbents & one newbie), received about 12% of the vote each. The other incumbant received a little more thsan 10%. That means approximately 66% of the vote went to challengers (& therfore against the incumbants.)
I believe that the voters here really want change. I also believe that Morris will lose if he decides to run again and is challenged by a few good people.

In for a shock wrote on Jul 28, 2008 12:41 AM:When the unions start their annual bashing for raises, no board member is safe. The darling of the November elections quickly turns into the enemy of salary negotiations when he/she realizes there is no money and that cuts have to be made or raises foregone. I bet JD can't name a board member that he liked. You can scream "throw out the incumbents" but as soon as you elect someone, you make that person an "incumbent" which, for some, is another word for "target". The board member who spends time with teachers and support staff, who spends time in the schools and classroom, who communicates regularly with teachers, parents, and administrators is the board member who is the most effective. While she may not be able to vote for raises because of budget constraints, she's the first one to meet with teachers to hear their concerns, discuss challenges, and seek REAL answers (not just "give us money") to the issues at hand. That's a good board member, and we've had one or two. The same holds true for the union president. After union elections, everyone is pumped about the "new guy" who's going to be "tough, effective, and get us what we want". Well, we've had 3 union presidents in the last 5 years. Again, I bet JD can't name one he has liked. School district governance is very difficult due to chronic under-funding, constant union negotiations, impossible state mandates, and the shear size of our district. True, we've had some really RUDE and AGENDA DRIVEN board members. But we wised up an they were voted out after one term. Being a board member is the most thankless job in the world. If the critics would be honest with themselves, they'd see the truth in my statements.
Just a parent not a district employee wrote on Jul 28, 2008 10:10 AM:Are you suggesting BT didn't (& doesn't still) have an agenda?
I'm not even going to address the rudeness because anyone (parent, students, teachers) who has ever been to a board meeting to observe (never mind speak publically) knows the truth about that.
True, the job is thankless but if one is willing to get informed, listen & then ask questions (not just take the word of upper admin. & other trustees, who believe always having consensus is the most important thing) before making decisions and if one at least attempts to be fair (no additional money for clasroom supplies, teachers & classifieds should also mean no money for admins raises &/or new admin. positions) I'm going to support that person.
You can't please all of the people all of the time but you can at least have open and honest discussion. You can also create an atmosphere that truly welcomes and appreciates community participation.
In for a shock wrote on Jul 28, 2008 11:58 PM:Just a parent, I couldn't agree more. One past board member who now serves at the city level still meets regularly with teachers and parents. That's the way to foster trust and community participation. I think Kristy has the spirit and compassion to fill those shoes. The fact that she is an educator is just icing on the cake.
JD wrote on Jul 30, 2008 3:32 PM:There haven't been that many board members I've known. The ones I have known are the ones who told me and my fellow students that they would LIE TO OUR TEACHERS and claim that we'd completed an aspect of a project, just to get us to leave. We were to spend an hour at a board meeting, and they offered to sign off our right away, so we wouldn't be there during the meeting. So you're right, I can't name a board member I like. That's because I can't think of a board member who truly is "Student centered: First, Last, Always". This is a school board. Schools are for education. Thus, it should be staffed by educators.
