FALLBROOK ---- Supervisor Bill Horn came to town Tuesday to check the progress of "The Barn" project at the Fallbrook Historical Society.

Horn told the two dozen society members at a reception in his honor that he was impressed with the work thus far at the facility, which is scheduled to open later this year.

Society treasurer Judy Gillespie called Horn the "patron saint" of the project and said that grants from the county that Horn spearheaded have helped cover nearly one-third of the cost of the $300,000 project, including a $30,000 allocation earlier this month.

"Clearly, there is no way we could have progressed to this point without the help of Supervisor Horn and his staff," said Gillespie.

"The supervisor has been a major reason this building was able to be built ---- he helped get this started by arranging a grant that provided us with seed money ---- and he has been there to help us on two other occasions. With Supervisor Horn's help, we've been given over $100,000 to build this barn," she said.

When finished later this year, the facility, known as the Don Rivers Interpretive Center, will house vehicles, tractors and farm implements used in the last 100 years in the Fallbrook.

"We still have a way to go before we're open to the public," said Gillespie. "Once this place is finished, it will be a museum of Fallbrook's history."

Horn admitted "The Barn" project is one of his favorite county projects.

"Having a place like this in Fallbrook is very important to the area and to the whole county," he said. "There's a lot of history here in this town and I want to do my part to help the Fallbrook Historical Society finish this project so visitors ... (can) see how important Fallbrook has been to the county's growth."

During his visit, Horn received a replica road sign from the Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce for his efforts in designating old Highway 395 as a historical roadway.
