REGION: Politicking at the pumps

Congressional candidate to pump gas at $1.27 a gallon Wednesday

NORTH COUNTY ---- A congressional candidate is taking his campaign to the pumps on Wednesday, and motorists may be in store for the best gas prices in years.

Nick Leibham, a Democrat running against Republican incumbent Brian Bilbray in the 50th Congressional District, said he will offer motorists gas at $1.27 a gallon as a way to spotlight Bilbray's ties to the oil industry.

"Gas prices didn't get this way all by their lonesome," Leibham said. "They had a lot of help by Brian Bilbray in Washington."

Leibham said he will subsidize the price of gas for 50 people at each of three North County gas stations, lowering the price to what it was in 1996, the year Bilbray first took donations from gas and oil companies.

Bilbray's spokesman, Kurt Bardella, called Leibham's act a stunt.

"That's quite a claim, that one person has something to do with raising gas prices," Bardella said.

Bardella also said the Democrat-led Congress has not found a way to lower gas prices and has opposed Republican plans to address the issue.

The Web site OpenSecrets.org, which tracks contributions made to politicians and candidates, shows the oil and gas industry has donated $8,550 to Bilbray this year and $182,818 throughout his congressional career, which began in 1995 as a representative to the 40th Congressional District. He represented the 40th District until 2001 and was elected to the 50th Congressional District in June 2006.

In a comparison that shows the oil and gas industry making bipartisan donations, OpenSecrets also identified Democrat Hillary Clinton as receiving $403,019 in the industry's money and Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama receiving $345,410 this year. Republican presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain was the top recipient of oil and gas money in 2008, with more than $1 million in donations so far.

Leibham said he will subsidize the first 10 gallons pumped by the first 50 motorists at each station, beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Shell station at 1060 N. El Camino Real in Encinitas.

At 2 p.m., Leibham will be at the Chevron station at 4S Ranch, 16629 Dove Canyon Road.

At 5 p.m., he will be at the Shell station at 3861 Valley Center Drive in Carmel Valley.

Gimmeabreak wrote on Jul 29, 2008 8:55 PM:Aw, c'mon, Nick! Bilbray is a Schmuck, no argument. But he gets the blame for high gas prices? That's a pretty lonnnnnnng stretch. Now, if you just pointed out that he's an absolute Congressional do-nothing, well, now you'd be tracking . . .

Supply and Demand wrote on Jul 29, 2008 9:33 PM:Yes, typical liberal thinking: subsidize the price of gasoline while refusing to do anything about supply!

Nancy Pelosi openly admits that we should increase supply (she wanted the National Oil Reserves to be opened for use), while at the same time she refuses to allow drilling in areas known to have billions of gallons of oil. This too is subsidizing while really doing nothing to increase supply. In the end the consumer is the only one hurting as the prices continue to rise due to increasing demand and falling supply.

By the way, lobbying is LEGAL! Who really cares what company is lobbying who: as long as it is done openly and legally!

Supply complaints demand no solutions wrote on Jul 29, 2008 10:18 PM:$1.27 a gallon is what got us into this mess in the first place. If Congress had passed a $1 a gallon gas tax back in 1996, we would've developed sensible vehicles and sensible driving habits and we'd be able to cope with $4 or $5 gas much more easily in 2008. The Democratic and Republican parties have both failed spectacularly when it comes to energy policy. S&D is right: The U.S. should increase its oil supply and refining capacity, which the Democrats have obstructed. More drilling and refining at home will keep us from indirectly funding terrorism abroad. But so will smaller cars, shorter commutes and carpools. And those are longer-term solutions. Eventually, the world's supply is going to run out if 150-degree afternoons don't kill us off first. So if five more years of limits on drilling and refining kill off Hummers, Escalades and Expeditions, it's fine with me. For that matter, I say raise gas taxes by $1 a gallon and balance it out by taking $1,000 off of each family's income tax bill.

Where did wrote on Jul 30, 2008 7:22 AM:You don't need any stinkin papers to vote, Busby wander off to?

Where did your brain go wrote on Jul 30, 2008 8:26 AM:Uh-oh, here we go again with the deliberate misunderstanding of Busby's campaign volunteers...

Greg in Oceanside wrote on Jul 30, 2008 9:15 AM:I agree, this is merely a 'stunt' and certainly looks like this Nick Leibham character is buying votes.

In case anyone is not really up on the issue of high fuel costs, look at the Democrats, they're chiefly to blame. And no, Brian Bilbray is not responsible.

If you're concerned about the real issues, like illegal immigration, strong national defense, and other things that are important to us, you'll steer clear of Democratic candidates like Nick Leibham and stick with Brian Bilbray.

Bunk wrote on Jul 30, 2008 9:45 AM:Wise up and stop listening to Rush who pushes an agenda and gets 400 million to prostitute himself for the Bush oil machine--they love the high prices.
Yes they de- regulated the housing--fat cats got rich, they de-regulated the oil speculators-again the fat cats Bush cronies are cleaning out your bank accounts.
BTW the bushies have not closed our borders-the cheap labor, and the outsourcing of jobs by the Bush cronies making a killing again.
Another guy who pushed the agenda is Hannity-200 million to push the lies. The oil companies have 33 million acres of land off shore to drill and they wont because the price is not high enough. And if we did drill in Alaska-the oil goes overseas to a world market.

The ploy to drill off our beaches and in protected areas is another land grab--preditor Capitalism wants no park land or wild areas the entire country must be exploited including the people.
While the Europeans drive cars that get 50 miles per gallon and electric cars have been around for a hundred years-fat Capatilists in the oil lobby won,t allow an alternative.
The Bushies and cronies have cut back on mine safety, de-regulated the airlines , housing , and oil and ship jobs to third world countries. And the 100 year war--great for the fat cats in Halliburton and the 16 dollar a meal for the military. All the while saying they are supporting the troops by voting for less benefits for the military.
People dont know when they are being ripped off and the country is being robbed blind. And they are just gullable enough to vote for another candidate who will be another GWB, and possibly worst.
