Kiwanis Division 37 plans family picnic

ESCONDIDO ---- Kiwanis International, Division 37, will hold its first-ever Family and Friends Picnic on Aug. 3 at Kit Carson Park. Four nominee families will be honored for their service to the community, with one chosen as Division 37 Kiwanis Family of the Year.

Dignitaries attending the event will be Division 37 Lt. Gov. Walt Schuette and his wife, Maurie Schuette; Cal-Nev-Ha District Gov. Oscar Knight and First Lady Gladys Knight; and Escondido City Councilman Ed Gallo. Opening welcome will be at 10:45 a.m., with awards announced at 2 p.m.

Concert on tap at Old Poway Park

POWAY ---- Nannette and her Hotsy Totsy Boys will perform from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Aug. 3 at Old Poway Park, 14134 Midland Road.

Founded in 2001, the group is a fun, roaring '20s entertainment act. It blends novelty songs of the era with humor, traditional jazz and swing, presented in a cabaret-style show.

The event is part of the Summer Concert in the Park Series sponsored by the city of Poway, Target Stores, and Marrokal Construction. Bring blankets or chairs.

Safe driving class offered for seniors

ESCONDIDO ---- The Senior Service Council will offer a two-part AARP 55 Alive safe driving class from 8 a.m.-noon Aug. 5 and 12 in the Dorothy E. Boeger Building, 728 N. Broadway.

Upon completion, seniors will receive a certificate good for three years entitling them to a reduction in the cost of their auto insurance. Cost is $10, payable by check only to AARP.

Windows networking group to meet

SAN MARCOS ---- Windows Networking Solutions User Group will meet at 6 p.m Aug. 7 at Coleman College, 1284 W. San Marcos Blvd. The program will be "Consultant's Tips, Tools and Technique: Speed Dating Style."

Founded in 2004, WiNSUG is a group of technical and business-minded people who gather for "human networking" about software and hardware networking. The focus and intent of the group is professional. Consultants, IT professionals, integrators and educators focused on the small- and medium-sized business market are encouraged to attend.

Western variety show planned at library

ESCONDIDO ---- Judy Taylor & the Wild Oats will perform as part of the Escondido Public Library's First Thursday Concert Series at 7 p.m. Aug. 7 in the Turrentine Room at the main library, 239 S. Kalmia St.

Judy Taylor and her all-girl band will perform a variety show featuring classic western songs sung in harmony. The group also will perform a side show with trick-roping, gun-spinning and bullwhip-cracking.

Bingo tournament to benefit senior center

POWAY ---- The Poway Senior Center will hold its sixth annual Bingo Tournament from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Aug. 9 at the center, 13094 Civic Center Drive.

Entry fee is $15 if paid by Aug. 2; $20 the day of tournament. A minimum buy-in is also required. Participants must be 18 or older. Proceeds will go to supporting programs and activities at the Poway Senior Center.

Cheerleading clinic offered

POWAY ---- Poway High School cheerleaders and coaches will hold a two-day cheer clinic for girls ages 5 to 14 on Aug. 9 and 10. Participants will learn motions, dances, jumps, stunts and cheers. Distinction Gallery to host benefit show

ESCONDIDO ---- The Distinction Gallery will present "Project 57," an exhibit honoring the memory and life of Charles "Chuck" Leslie Walker, from Aug. 9-Sept. 6 at the gallery, 317 E. Grand Ave.

Approximately 100 artists are participating in the show, with all gallery profits going to the Lewy Body Dementia Association.

An opening reception is planned from 6-11 p.m. Aug. 9 and will feature food donated by A Taste of Florence and beer provided by Karl Strauss. Cost is $10.

'Notable Women in SD History' program set

RANCHO PENASQUITOS ---- The Rancho Penasquitos Branch Library and OASIS Escondido will present "Notable Women in San Diego History" from 1-3 p.m. Aug. 11 in the Community Room at the library, 13330 Salmon River Road.

The free program for adults will reveal the fascinating lives of San Diego women who have distinguished themselves in history. Learn about Flora Kimball, a women's activist, horticulturist and artist; Clara Shortridge Foltz, California's first female attorney; Dena Apolineria Lorenzana, ranch owner; Ida Bailey, San Diego's famous madam; and Kate Sessions, the notable horticulturist of Balboa Park.

Grape Stomp 2008 set for Aug. 23

ESCONDIDO ---- Orfila Vineyards & Winery will host Grape Stomp 2008, its biggest event of the year celebrating the grape harvest, from 4-8 p.m. Aug. 23 at the winery, 13455 San Pasqual Road.

The annual celebration will include a full dinner buffet, dancing to live music, traditional grape stomping, wine tasting and winery tours.

Poker run to benefit Komen for the Cure

NORTH COUNTY ---- The Queen of Hearts Motorcycle Poker Run is planned for Aug. 23 starting at Bates Nut Farm in Valley Center and ending at Smokey's Lake Wohlford Cafe in Escondido.

The event is being held with the Nuts for a Cure 5K cross-country walk taking place that day at Bates Nut Farm. Proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer foundation.

Registration will begin at 7 a.m., and riders will depart at 10 a.m. After the ride, participants can enjoy the sounds of the band Fastlane from 2-4 p.m. at Smokey's.

Health Services offered for seniors

ESCONDIDO ---- The Senior Service Council will offer these health services for seniors in the Dorothy E. Boeger Building, 728 N. Broadway (in the Joslyn Senior Center complex). Call (760) 480-0611.

-- A blood pressure clinic is held from 8:30-9 a.m. Mondays for staff and volunteers and from 9-10 a.m. for the public.

-- Diabetes blood sugar screening will be offered from 8-9 a.m. Aug. 1 and 15. This service is offered the first and third Fridays of each month. Do not eat, drink or take medication before coming in. No appointment is necessary.

-- Local dentist Dr. Randy Jungman will conduct dental screenings from 9-10:15 a.m. Aug. 6. This service is offered the first Wednesday of each month. Call for an appointment.

-- Audiologist David Illich will conduct and interpret professional hearing tests at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 11. Illich also will give advice on hearing aids. This services is provided the second Monday of each month. Call for space availability.

Julian Starfest planned for Aug. 1-3

JULIAN ---- Astronomers from all throughout California, Arizona and Nevada will descend on the area for the inaugural Julian Starfest to take place Aug. 1-3 in the large open field behind the Menghini Winery, two miles north of Julian on Farmer Road near the intersection of Wynola Road.

The public is invited to attend starting at 9 a.m. Aug. 2 and 3. The event will include exhibits, displays, lectures and telescopes for stargazing. Free telescope viewing will be available from 8-11 p.m. Aug. 2.
