KOCT seeks questions for candidates
OCEANSIDE ---- KOCT-TV invites the public to submit questions to ask candidates running for local office. All questions must be received by 5 p.m. Aug. 21. Library to celebrate Potter's birthday
OCEANSIDE ---- The Oceanside Public Library will celebrate Harry Potter's birthday with activities, music and dancing at 2 p.m. Aug. 2 in the Civic Center Library Community Rooms and patio, 330 N. Veterans Association to hold fundraiser
OCEANSIDE ---- The Veterans Association of North County will hold a fundraiser from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Oceanside Bandshell. The event will include food and four bands: The Pharoahs, Dixieland Band, Nitro Express and J.D. Crawford. Cost for food and an opportunity drawing is $2 per person, $5 for families. Oceanside Kiwanians will sell funnel cakes, popcorn and sodas. Profits will be used to renovate the old police station at 1617 Mission Ave into a veterans center. Call (760) 941-4712.
American GI Forum holds mariachi concert fundraiser
OCEANSIDE ---- The American GI Forum Oceanside chapter will sponsor a mariachi concert scholarship fundraiser at 6 p.m. Sept. 20 at Martin Luther King Middle School, 1290 Ivey Ranch Road. Proceeds will benefit high school students in the Advancement Via Individual Determination program. The concert, with support from San Diego Gas and Electric, will feature dinner and a performance by Mariachi Chula Vista. Tickets for dinner and reserved seating cost $25. Chamber to back fire hydrant art
CARLSBAD ---- The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce will host its fire hydrant painting program, "Art in the Heart of the Village" again this summer. The theme will be animals, and the community is invited to participate. Under the approval of the city of Carlsbad, about 30 hydrants and four power boxes throughout the Village are expected to be painted by August. Afterward, a detailed map will be provided to the general public that notes the location of each, as well as the artist and sponsor.
The chamber will host tours of Carlsbad's downtown in August to vote for the top three designs. Ballots will be available at select businesses. Winners will be announced in September. Chamber's charity golf tournament set for Aug. 4
CARLSBAD ---- The 2008 Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament will take place Aug. 4 at The Crossings at Carlsbad, 5800 The Crossings Drive. During the scramble format tournament, each golfer will be eligible for one of four opportunities to take part in a $1 million hole-in-one shootout. If someone gets a hole-in-one at Hole No. 9, Saturn of West 78 will give the golfer a brand-new automobile. The tournament will include longest drive, putting and straightest-drive competitions in addition to opportunity drawings, a live and silent auction, top of the line tee prizes and goody bags. Box lunch will be provided. The annual event will be followed by an awards banquet and gourmet dinner prepared by the golf course's restaurant.
The tournament will benefit two local nonprofit organizations: the chamber's Partners in Education Foundation, which supports Carlsbad public schools, and Military Outreach Ministry Camp Pendleton, which distributes food and provides furniture and other household items to qualified service members in need. Carlsbad library to host summer concerts
CARLSBAD ----- Carlsbad City Library's continuing summer concert series will feature Los Pinguos at 2 p.m. Aug. 17 in the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium at Carlsbad City Library, 1775 Dove Lane. Los Pinguos came to the U.S. from Buenos Aires, Argentina, with a mix of Latin rhythms performed with Spanish guitars, a Cuban tres (guitar-like instrument), Peruvian cajon (box drum) and harmonizing vocals.
