Embroidery group to meet Aug. 7

ESCONDIDO ---- The Threaded Needle Chapter of Embroiderers Guild of America will meet from 7-9 p.m. Aug. 7 at Redwood Elderlink, 1151 S. Redwood St. The group meets the first Thursday of the month. Call (760) 741-5441.

Free VA benefit workshop set

ESCONDIDO ---- Villa Del Rey senior community will host a free workshop about a little-known Veterans Administration benefit at 6 p.m. Aug. 6. Guest speaker will be author and columnist Galen Maddy, who also will give away a copy of his new book on VA benefits called "Aid & Attendance." Villa Del Rey is at 1351 E. 'Ladies Hike' rescheduled

ESCONDIDO ---- A "Ladies Hike" scheduled for Aug. 7 at Daley Ranch has been rescheduled for 6 a.m. Aug. 16.

Women (and men, too) are invited to take a guided nature hike with naturalist D.J. Summers. See what is in bloom and learn about the wildlife at the ranch. Meet at the Daley Ranch entrance on La Honda Drive.

Free jazz concert planned at Art Walk

ESCONDIDO ---- The Downtown Business Association of Escondido will present a free jazz concert from 4:30-7 p.m. Aug. 9 on Kalmia Street at Grand Avenue. This concert is a new addition to the free monthly Second Saturday Art Walks.

Some of North County's best known jazz musicians, including Jack Brooks and Ray Fernandez on guitar, Nathan Mills on trumpet, Benny Jackson on clarinet, Bruce Grafrath on standup bass and Kenny Powell on percussion, will perform jazz standards and swing music that will delight all ages. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

The Downtown Artwalk will be from 5-9 p.m. Gallery listings and maps will be handed out at the jazz concert. The art walk will feature more than 25 artists, galleries and museums, showcasing their diversity with artist receptions and demonstrations.

Volunteers sought to help build bleachers

SAN MARCOS ---- The Twin Oaks Valley Equestrian Association will meet at 1 p.m. Aug. 9 at Walnut Grove Park to begin construction on new bleachers and shade for the horse ring. The group held a Poker Ride last year to raise funds for the structures. More volunteers are needed. Bring tools, sockets, wrenches and gloves. Food and drinks will be provided at 5:30 p.m. by Pathfinder Farm.

'Art and History of the Tattoo' is topic

ESCONDIDO ---- The Escondido Arts Partnership will host a program from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Aug. 9 on "The Art & History of the Tattoo." The program, at the Escondido Municipal Gallery, 262 E. Grand Ave., is part of the monthly Art Connection free arts education series.

Tattoo artist Ryan Brink of Dermalgrafix will discuss the history and art of tattoos and tattoos in the 21st century, including what to look for and avoid when shopping for a tattoo.

UpStream to perform island music

POWAY ---- The Target Summer Concert in the Park Series continues with the Carribean band UpStream from 5:30-7 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Lake Poway Recreation Area, 14644 Lake Poway Road.

Lake Poway Grill and Tackle will sell ice cream and summertime snacks. The concert is free; however, there is a $5 parking fee at Lake Poway for nonresidents before 5 p.m. Shuttle service will start at 4 p.m. from Poway High School.

Auxiliary to host breakfast

ESCONDIDO ---- The American Legion Auxiliary will host its monthly breakfast from 7:30-10:30 a.m. Aug. 10 at the Veterans Memorial Building, 230 Park Ave.

The menu will include eggs to order, sausage, blueberry or plain pancakes, fruit, juice and coffee for a donation of $6.

Proceeds will benefit veterans, youths, community services and other programs of the auxiliary.

PFLAG chapter to meet

RANCHO BERNARDO ---- The San Diego North County Inland chapter of PFLAG (Parents, Friends and Families of Lesbians and Gays), a parent-led support group, will meet at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 12 in the Community Room at San Diego National Bank, 16789 Bernardo Center Drive. Entry is through the double doors facing Bernardo Center Drive.

Vision and learning workshop set

SAN MARCOS ---- Parents and educators are invited to a free workshop from 7-8:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at It's Academic Tutoring Center, 1615 S. Rancho Santa Fe Road, Suite A, that will provide them with practical tools to help children who are having trouble with learning because of vision problems.

Attendees can learn how to build school performance by enhancing vision, and how to perform assessments and tests of vision skills. Reserve to (951) 234-1915.

'Itty Bitty' art class offered

POWAY ---- Stamping Details, 14009 Midland Road, will offer an art class called "Itty Bitty" from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Aug. 11 and again from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 18.

Create two tiles and decorate them with a shrink-plastic center piece. Add wire art, beads or rhinestones to turn the tiles into necklaces, pins, magnets or card embellishments. Cost of $28 includes supplies.

'Sundae Singing' planned at Ramona church

RAMONA ---- Ramona United Methodist Church will present "Sundae Singing," a musical show and ice cream social, at 6 p.m. Aug. 23 at the church, 3394 Chapel Lane.

Donated services and baskets will be featured in live and silent auctions. To donate a service for the auction, call the church office at (760) 789-7106.

Tickets are $10 per person or $20 per family, which includes the show and ice cream. Ice cream refills are $2. Child care will be provided by the Ramona UMC Youth for children under 4. Reserve to the number above.

'Spa at Home' workshop offered

SAN MARCOS ---- The city will offer a "Spa at Home" workshop for adults from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Aug. 23 at the San Elijo Recreation Center, 1105 Elfin Forest Road.

Make and take home an aromatherapy spritzer and an almond body exfoliating scrub, and receive recipes for how to whip up spa treatments with other natural delights such as avocados.

PowPAC to hold 'Lobby Hero' auditions

POWAY ---- PowPAC, Poway's Community Theatre, will hold open auditions for "Lobby Hero," a drama by Kenneth Lonergan, at 7 p.m. Aug. 25 and 26 in the Lively Center at the theater, 13250 Poway Road.

Roles are open for three men (one black) and one woman. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. No appointments necessary. Headshots and resumes are helpful, but not required. Reading of the script in advance is strongly recommended. Callbacks, if necessary, will be Aug. 27.

Kevin Jones will direct. Co-producers are Debbie David and Kaly McKenna. Performance dates are Oct. 17-Nov. 9.
