Senior center to hold ballroom dance

Tri-City Computer Club to meet

KOCT names new station manager

OCEANSIDE ---- Executive Director Tom Reeser has announced that Jacob Rush was recently promoted to the position of station manager for KOCT- Oceanside Community Television.

Hired by KOCT in 2001, Rush has been a member of the KOCT Production Team and ultimately advanced to production supervisor in charge of the department. As station manager, Rush has oversight of other KOCT departments as well, and responsibility for promotion of KOCT video production services and studio rental.

A 2000 Cal State San Marcos graduate, Rush earned a bachelor of arts degree in liberal studies with special fields in arts and technology and sociology. Rush is a 2008 graduate of Leadership North County and on the steering committee for the LNC class of 2009. He is also on the steering committee for North County Young Professionals and represents KOCT with the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce.

Veterans Association to hold fundraiser

OCEANSIDE ---- The Veterans Association of North County will hold a fundraiser from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Oceanside Bandshell. The event will include food and four bands: The Pharoahs, Dixieland Band, Nitro Express and J.D. Crawford. Cost for food and an opportunity drawing is $2 per person, $5 for families. Oceanside Kiwanians will sell funnel cakes, popcorn and sodas. Profits will be used to renovate the old police station at 1617 Mission Ave into a veterans center. Call (760) 941-4712.

Annual ice cream social at Heritage Park

OCEANSIDE ---- The Friends of Heritage Park Village will hold its annual Ice Cream Social from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 10 at Heritage Park, 220 Peyri Road. Entertainment will include the Makihele Revue from 12:30-2 p.m.; and the Billy Harper Band from 2-4 p.m.

This year will feature a party jump for kids, free popcorn from the Lions Club, a sale at the General Store, a bake sale sponsored by the Senior Center's Nutrition Program, a Model A car show, and ice cream parlor with sundaes, cones, root beer floats and hot dogs. In addition, docents will be on duty for tours of the historical buildings of Heritage Park, which include the old schoolhouse, the post office, the jail, the printing press office and more. Class will explain reverse mortgages

Sculpture party set for Aug. 9

CARLSBAD ---- The Lynn Forbes School of Sculpture will present a Sculpture Party and Children's Show from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Aug. 9 at Village Fair Plaza, 300 Carlsbad Village Drive. Highlighting the show will be an award ceremony at 6 p.m. sponsored by Francois Wainwright with many prizes, including a $1,000 grand prize. The event will offer sculpting demonstrations; opportunities to sculpt ($5 for clay) or to be a model; and a chance to vote for some 70 examples of sculpture works by children ages 5-14.

Women voters to host tour of 'Green House'

CARLSBAD ---- The League of Women Voters of San Diego County will host a house and vineyard tour, with box lunch, of Peder Norby's newly designed structure, "Herons’ House," from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 16, at 4795 Hillside Drive. The guided tour of the Norbys' energy-efficient "green" home, wine cellar, vineyard and the native-plant garden will focus on using environmentally superior materials that work with the natural environment. The home was recently featured in Decor & Style Magazine and Carlsbad Magazine, and was on the Castles of Carlsbad 2007 Tour and Carlsbad Garden Tour.

Democratic club to hold fundraiser

ENCINITAS ---- The Rancho North Coast Democratic Club will hold a Democratic Victory 2008 fundraiser at 1 p.m. Aug. 16 at the Clubhouse at 454 Requeza St. Attendees can meet 50th Congressional District candidate Nick Liebham and 74th Assembly District candidate Brett Maxfield, as well as Rochelle Collier, candidate for Encinitas City Council.

Volunteer drivers needed for seniors

Monthly bird count at Batiquitos Lagoon

CARLSBAD ---- The Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation will offer the easy, docent-led bird count walk at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 8 and every second Friday of the month, starting from the Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation Nature Center parking lot, at the end of Gabbiano Lane. The purpose is to count the birds both seen and heard at the lagoon and report the numbers to the Audubon Society. Center offers safety net for seniors

Animal center collects used ink cartridges

RANCHO SANTA FE ---- The Helen Woodward Animal Center is seeking donations of used ink jet cartridges to recycle for its "Cartridges for Critters" fundraiser benefiting the animals. The shelter, 6461 El Apajo Road, is also able to accept DVDs, laptops, MP3 players, digital cameras, portable DVD players, video game consoles and global positioning systems. Small dogs seek homes

Seniors to take field trip to Balboa Park

ENCINITAS ---- Magdalena Ecke YMCA Active Adults will take a field trip from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 12to visit Balboa Park's Gables & Gardens. The tour bus departs from the YMCA gymnasium, 200 Saxony Road. An architectural historian will relate the story of the park and its development. The tour will include lunch at Waters Cafe and time to explore the park's free museums and gardens. Cost is $59 for members, $64 nonmembers; includes transportation, admissions, guides and lunch. Introduction to ballroom dance

ENCINITAS ---- The Encinitas Senior Center will offer the beginning ballroom dance class from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Encinitas Senior Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive. Students can improve posture, coordination, balance, timing, and concentration through ballroom dancing. The waltz will be the focus of the August class.
