OCEANSIDE: City official to run for school board
Challengers emerge in OUSD race
By STACY BRANDT - Staff Writer | ∞
OCEANSIDE ---- In a surprising move, Deputy City Manager Mike Blessing has filed papers to run for a seat on the Oceanside Unified School District Board of Trustees.
Blessing has worked for the city for the last three decades. His wife, Sandi, was on the Oceanside school board from 1992 to 1996.
Blessing said Friday he decided to run because he wants to remain involved in the community after he retires from the city next year and because he wants to share some of what he's learned during his 30 years at City Hall.
Both he and Bill Abel ----- another challenger for the two school board seats held by Adrianne Hakes and Roy Youngblood ----- said they are pleased with the direction the district has been heading under the current board.
Abel, director of transportation for the Ramona Unified School District, said he also wants to use his years of experience to serve the public. His grandchildren are enrolled in Oceanside Unified schools, he said.
"If (voters) just want to try someone different, I think I'd be a good candidate for that," Abel said. "People get tired of the same thing going on."
Until last week, incumbents Hakes and Youngblood said they didn't expect any challengers. Both said they wanted to run for another four-year term to continue the work they have done while on the board.
Youngblood has held his seat for 12 years; Hakes for eight.
In the last two elections, Oceanside Unified board members have run unopposed.
Hakes, a retired educator, said she thinks the school district races are so quiet because the community is pleased with the work the board and district administrators are doing.
Youngblood, a substitute teacher and retired Navy corpsman, said he is confident that he and Hakes will be re-elected.
"Why would somebody want to vote for someone different when they know what they've got right now and they're happy with us?" he asked rhetorically. "I don't think there are many people who want somebody new just to get a new body in there."
Candidates have said they don't expect to do much fundraising during the election, which they said they expect to be low-key.
Any potential challengers had until 5 p.m. Friday to file election papers. A final candidate list wasn't available Friday afternoon. However, an updated list will soon be available online at www.sdcounty.ca.gov/voters.
At least one other person ---- former Marine Sgt. Tia Ballard-Gregson ---- had picked up election papers, but hadn't filed them as of Friday morning.

However, Ms. Hakes, along with Ms. Lacey, gave the appearance of just plain being irritated with us for trying to find a way to rejuvenate the charter school. I say, bring on the challengers and let me know what stands they take on things.

Vote for Blessing wrote on Aug 8, 2008 11:35 PM:If everybody likes Youngblood it is news to me. He is not very nice and not very well prepared on most issues. I will vote for Blessing who is intelligent, well prepared and is known for his good disposition. Please think carefully about our kids and vote for Blessing.
Hakes Has To Go wrote on Aug 9, 2008 8:31 AM:Her elaboration about her Hawaiian vacation went on and on the night the District had the SBT on their Agenda. Lots of parents and children who were very concerned had to listen to Hakes diatribe about her vacation before the meeting got started. We are not interested in their personal life issues. We want School District Business taken care of at those meetings! Mike Blessing will be a practiced Public representative of the District. He will stick to the business of the Agenda and he sure as heck knows how to read a financial statement and manage a Budget! Vote for Mike and eliminate Hakes nonsense! Mike will stick to the Business of the District. If he had been a Board Member, Rocky Chavez would not have loaned SBT money to operate with.

Shoo in wrote on Aug 9, 2008 10:15 AM:Mike is a shoo-in. People have been waiting to elect someone to this board who they know and trust and who is familiar with the entire community, not just their ivory tower on the school board. Absolutely no question that me and the entire extended family will vote for him!
Got To Go wrote on Aug 9, 2008 10:36 AM:Hakes and Youngblood got to go! They are about as interested as wet hens when it comes to what their responsibility should be. No oversight and no accountability and I do not believe either should be reelected. These two are obviously OUT OF TOUCH with reality and the adage of "Familiarity Breeds Contempt" applies when one becomes complacent. They are asleep at the wheel!
I agree.... wrote on Aug 9, 2008 11:22 AM:Mike Blessing will be an asset to the school board. His work over the many years with the city has been top notch and I'm sure he will carry it forward on the school board.
Oceanside Parent wrote on Aug 9, 2008 11:26 AM:If you look back at the school board those people have been there waaaay too long, it is always a good idea to get new people in, avoid clicks, backroom deals, and conflicts interest. Get some people in there that are not involve in that mess and are willing to make some positive changes for the sake of our children. We need an entirely new board, new blood, and new energy.
I think Mike Blessing is a good choice. He has my vote.

Jazzie wrote on Aug 9, 2008 5:10 PM:To clarify on the"Vote for Blessing" comment "Is everyone happy with Mr. Youngblood?"
I have no idea.
But, I can tell you this....at the beginning of our SBT issue with the school board, I emailed every person on the school board. Mr. Youngblood was the only person to respond. He identified what the issues were likely to be, and neither made promises he couldn't keep, nor exhibited the "attitude" that the terrible threesome had towards us. After the first meeting, Mr. Youngblood took a moment to speak to me, as did Mr. Perondi. Neither gentlemen minimized the challenges ahead of us, but both recognized that we were a totally new group of parents and staff that were working to revitalize this school.
Now, again, from my point of view, both Ms. Adams and Mr. Youngblood were able to maintain a professional level of courtesy to our parents' group. Their questions were relevant and to the point, and were not delivered in a chastising manner. Ms. Lacy, Ms. Hakes, and Ms. Wichmann, were not able to do that. Take a look at the transcripts. At the last meeting Ms. Lacy was actually rather irate with the parents' group. Now...she's not up for election, nor is Ms. Wichmann. Ms. Hakes is. I will not be voting for her. Am I going to vote for Blessing? I don't know. Let me find out where he really stands. As to Hakes? Well, I already know what Hakes is about, and I have no more patience for that. The debacle of the last three months is more than enough for me.
Besides, in two more years, we can see what kind of changes may take place with Wichmann and Lacy. Lord knows, I'd be tempted to run myself come 2010!
