MILITARY: Cheney visits Pendleton troops

By North County Times | Wednesday, August 13, 2008 5:05 PM PDT

CAMP PENDLETON ---- Vice President Dick Cheney made a brief visit to Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base on Wednesday afternoon, meeting with troops taking part in a training exercise.

The vice president flew into the base aboard Air Force Two and quickly climbed into an SUV for his visit with the troops. Lt. Gen. Samuel Helland, head of the base's I Marine Expeditionary Force, accompanied Cheney during the stopover.

Later in the evening, Cheney was scheduled to attend a private fundraiser in San Clemente for U.S. Rep. Ken Calvert, R-Corona, and then depart for Washington.

His visit with the troops and the Calvert event were closed to the public and reporters.

Cheney is not good enough for our troops wrote on Aug 13, 2008 5:25 PM:The history will be written about Cheney and we will look back on this little man with disgust and heartache. So many lives lost and so many people hurt and disabled because of his actions. I hope that some day he apologizes and really feels for the hurt he has caused so many mothers and fathers.

jeff wrote on Aug 13, 2008 7:08 PM:How much will this useless trip for a political fundraiser cost the taxpayers?
Thank God he's gone soon!

Sickening wrote on Aug 13, 2008 9:15 PM:How sickening is it when a man who has no clue can tie up our freeways and preach to our wonderful men and women soldiers who are dying for no reason. I'm disgusted by him and all there is about him.

Entrenched wrote on Aug 13, 2008 9:34 PM:Cheney and associates will be entrenched in the industrial-military complex far into the future and will profit from the wages of war beyond our wildest imaginations. Evil never ends easy my dear friends.

Grump wrote on Aug 13, 2008 9:42 PM:Jeff makes an excellent point; the VP comes out here along with his huge posy in tow under the disguise of visiting the troops, how convenient that there was a political fundraiser going on at the same time. The troops could give a hoot, I hated when VIPs would visit, it always meant tighter security hassles and more working parties.

gimmeabreak wrote on Aug 13, 2008 10:02 PM:Says something about the intelligence level of either the Congressional Candidate (Calvert in Corona) or his constituents that Cheney would be a draw for a fundraiser. Maybe if each attendee was given a bag of rotten tomatoes of cartons of spoiled milk to toss at the "guest of honor." Creepy.

McBeth wrote on Aug 13, 2008 10:08 PM:they are dying for a reason. His former company's profits. No less. Doesn't that make you proud?

Traffic on the I- wrote on Aug 13, 2008 11:11 PM:So that's the explanation for the traffic jam on the I-5 today? Good grief!

Cheney will never feel any measure of remorse for the damage he has caused. His lack of transparency while simultaneous push for invading everyone else's privacy will be a topic of discussion in constitutional law conversations for generations.

Talking To Who Again wrote on Aug 14, 2008 1:11 AM:I'm pretty sure he doesn't give a damn what you little people have to say =)

thats true wrote on Aug 14, 2008 8:13 AM:he doesn't care about what real people think but it makes me FEEL better to vent! Have a nice day.

Loyal Constituent wrote on Aug 14, 2008 8:51 AM:Glad to see that Cheney visited our local base. It was good for morale.

Keep up the awesome work, Mr. Vice President.

Your job, as well as the Presidents, is often a thankless job. Often you are darned if you do and darned if you don't.

Fair winds, Mr. V-P.

Boat wrote on Aug 14, 2008 9:02 AM:As a veteran it irritates me to no end to see Cheney doing things like this. After all, this is the man who said, "I had better things to do in the '70's than serve in the military."

As an American citizen it pains me to have to admit how much I despise my own vice president. And, I do love my country, I served her proudly for ten years. I am first generation American. I am just so saddened by how things have gone downhill in the past seven and a half years. The Constitution has been trashed, our prestige around the world is gone and we are going to have to work hard to get it back.

Hopefully we are all on to better times soon.

Lee wrote on Aug 14, 2008 9:10 AM:Thanks Camp Pendleton Marines

for providing the Vice-President for the write-off he needed to attend the real purpose of his visit,
the Orange County fundraisers.

Without the Camp Pendleton 'visit' to 'thank our troops' he wouldn't be able to legitimately use
Air Force II to attend a fundraisers.

So, here's a big Thank You !

He also deferred wrote on Aug 14, 2008 2:20 PM:Our proud VP also deferred 5 times to avoid going to Vietnam. He's a true chicken hawk.
