Learn about local cemeteries
OCEANSIDE ---- The Oceanside Historical Society will co-host a free program on local cemeteries with the Oceanside Public Library at 10 a.m. Aug. 23 in the Civic Center Library Community Rooms, 330 N. Coast Highway.
Dr. Seth Mallios and David Caterino will give a lecture based on their book, "Cemeteries of San Diego County," published by Arcadia Press this year. Topics will include San Diego historical cemeteries, including Oceanside's historical cemeteries San Luis Rey Pioneer, Oceanview, All Saints and Mission San Luis Rey.
Oceanside Historical Society President Kristi Hawthorne will give an introduction that will include long-lost photographs of the Buena Vista Cemetery in south Oceanside and the Oceanview Cemetery on South Coast Highway. Brother Benno Foundation needs photos
OCEANSIDE ---- The Brother Benno Foundation will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Oct. 25. Part of the foundation's celebration will be a 10- to 12-minute DVD of photos put to music to help tell the story of the foundation's 25 years of service to the less fortunate. The foundation is asking anyone who has pictures taken at the center or the original Brother Benno Kitchen that was on Minnesota Street from 1983-1991 to lend them to the foundation for the DVD. NCHS lowers fees for adult cats
OCEANSIDE ---- To encourage adoptions of adult cats, the North County Humane Society is offering a discount on adoption fees through Aug. 23. Any cat over 1 year old can be adopted for $30. El Camino Singles to meet

Shriners to hold golf tournament
VISTA ---- The 14th annual San Diego Shrine Scramble Charity Golf Tournament will be held Aug. 25 at Shadowridge Country Club, 1980 Gateway Drive. The winning four-person team wins four memberships to Shadowridge Country Club. The event is limited to the first paid 120 players. Cost is $175 per person, which includes golf, 1/2 cart and an awards meal. Non-golfers pay $25. There also will be a silent auction and raffles for prizes such as rounds of golf, a Scotty Cameron putter, Taylormade Kingdom fitting session and more. City to host family camp-out at park
 CARLSBAD ---- The Carlsbad Recreation Department will host the "Snores & S'mores: Pirates Cove" family camp-out from 5 p.m. Aug.16  to 9 a.m. Aug. 17 at Stagecoach Community Park, 3420 Camino de los Coches. The unique event will offer all the fun of camping, with the safety and conveniences provided by a local community center. The theme is "Pirates Cove," taking participants on an overnight adventure to live the pirate's life, including searching for hidden treasure, family competitions, arts and crafts, outdoor family movie screening, popcorn and bonfires for s'more-making. Participants may pitch a tent or sleep under the stars. A community barbecue is included in the price, or families may choose to bring their own food. Chamber to host 'State of the City' luncheon
CARLSBAD ---- The annual State of the City luncheon, hosted by the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, will address the economy's impact on Carlsbad's financial state from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Four Seasons Resort Aviara, 7100 Four Seasons Point. During the luncheon, attendees will watch a short video featuring Mayor Bud Lewis, the City Council and city staff. The progress report will cover the city's budget, including revenue and expenses; staff changes; Carlsbad's water portfolio and infrastructure, including roads and parks, and provide information about the community's vision for the Cannon Road agricultural lands and various projects. City celebrates learning center opening
CARLSBAD ---- The city will celebrate the grand opening of the Carlsbad City Library Learning Center Aug. 23 at 3368 Eureka Place. This unites two longtime library services, the Adult Learning Program and the Centro de Informacion, into one educational resource for individuals and families.
The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. followed by ribbon cutting, tours, children's activities, entertainment and refreshments until 3 p.m. Reserve by Aug. 15 to (760) 602-2011.

Chamber to back fire hydrant art
CARLSBAD ---- The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce is hosting its fire hydrant painting program, "Art in the Heart of the Village," again this summer. The theme is animals and the community is invited to participate. About 28 hydrants and four power boxes in the Village area are expected to be painted. The cost to adopt a hydrant or power box varies from $300-$750, which includes the adoption fee and paint. If needed, the chamber can recommend volunteer artists to paint the focal points. Once all the hydrants and power boxes are painted, a map will be provided to the general public that shows the location, the artist and sponsor.
The chamber will host tours of Carlsbad's downtown in August to vote for the top three designs. Ballots will be at select businesses in the Village. Winners will be announced in September. Seniors meet to dance

Gardens to offer 'Gourd Art' class
ENCINITAS ---- Quail Botanical Gardens will offer a class in "Creating Gourd Art" with instruction by fiber artist Carol Lang from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 15 at the gardens, 230 Quail Gardens Drive. Students will learn how to choose, clean, and cut gourds before dying, painting, pyroengraving (wood burning), and embellishing a one-of-a-kind gourd to use as a bowl, birdhouse or covered container. College to offer military spouses financial aid
CARDIFF ---- MiraCosta College’s Community Services Program is participating in the Military Spouse Career Advancement Account Demonstration Project to provide not-for-credit career training programs to military spouses who apply at North County Coastal Career Center. Hosted by the U.S. Departments of Labor and Defense, the Demonstration Project is designed to address the educational challenges of military spouses and provide highly-skilled, well-trained workers to employers in high-demand industries. To complete their education through MiraCosta College, spouses in the program can receive financial assistance up to $6,000 over a two-year period. These grants may be used to complete programs and a variety of online course work offered with Gatlin Education that can lead to state-approved credentials. Call (760) 795-6820.
Shelter seeks food donations for pets
RANCHO SANTA FE ---- The AniMeals program at the Helen Woodward Animal Center is seeking pet food donations, particularly senior food for both dogs and cats. AniMeals works with Meals-on-Wheels and other organizations to provide free food for the pets of elderly or disabled people throughout San Diego County. Donations can be dropped off at the Helen Woodward Animal Center, 6461 El Apajo Road, or in the AniMeals bins at participating Petco stores. Volunteers can also hold their own AniMeals pet food drives through their office, family, school, church or temple group, Scout troop, or civic organization.
