Food Bank distribution center open Saturdays

ESCONDIDO ---- The distribution center for the North County Food Bank will be open from 6-8 p.m. Saturdays at Grove Park, corner of Mission Avenue and Ash Street. The center will be available weekly for people in need.

Volunteers are needed; donations are welcome. Volunteers should meet at 5 p.m. at the park (park across the street at Pioneer School). Call Danny Perez at (760) 580-1279.

'Wizard Rockumentary' film screening set

ESCONDIDO ---- The Escondido Public Library will host a screening of "The Wizard Rockumentary: A Movie About Rocking and Rowling" at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 15 in the Turrentine Room at the main library, 239 S. Kalmia St.

Two years ago, twin sisters Mallory and Megan Schuyler began traveling the country to document wizard rock ---- music inspired by J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" book series. The movie documents the development of the fan music genre, the musicians' goals to promote the love of books and music among young people, and the emotions within the fandom during the year leading to the final book release. Local wizard rock band Marked As His Equal will open. CDs of the band's music and DVDs of the movie will be available for purchase.

Film screening to feature special guest

ESCONDIDO ---- Jim Summers of the San Diego Chapter of Veterans for Peace will introduce the film "Sir! No Sir!" at 7 p.m. Aug. 15 at the North County Democratic Unity's 2008 campaign office, 135 E. Grand Ave. Summers served in the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps from 1973-1977 and was an instructor at Hospital Corps School. He is a teacher, a Quaker and a union activist.

In "Sir! No Sir!," director David Zeiger uses interviews and archival footage from the Vietnam era to weave together the tale of the soldiers and veterans who worked to bring a message of peace to the public eye.

The presentation is part of the North County Democratic Unity's "Cruisin' and a Movie" series held Fridays during downtown Escondido's Cruisin' Grand. Light refreshments will be offered starting at 6:30 p.m. followed by screenings of relevant films at 7. Each will be introduced by a knowledgeable speaker. Billy Watson to perform at Old Poway Park

POWAY ---- Billy Watson will give a free concert from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Aug. 17 at Old Poway Park, 14134 Midland Road, as part of the Target Summer Concert in the Park Series.

'Kut-A-Thon' to help fight breast cancer

ESCONDIDO ---- Kids Kuts of Escondido, 1210 Auto Park Way, will hold its seventh annual "Kut-A-Thon" from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 17 to benefit the fight against breast cancer.

Kids Kuts owner Delores Zamora is team captain of Liz's Camo Queens (formerly the Princess Blister Sisters), who will walk in their seventh Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day walk in November. The team has raised about $280,000 for breast cancer research since participating in its first walk in 2001 and will reach $313,000 by this year's walk.

Kids Kut stylists will volunteer their time and donate all money earned at the "Kut-A-Thon" to the breast cancer cause. Appointments are recommended. Call (760) 432-8933.

Boutique offers craft classes

Event to benefit fight against breast cancer

VALLEY CENTER ---- Bates Nut Farm and the Valley Center Woman's Club invite the community to a homemade spaghetti dinner and dance from 5:30-10 p.m. Aug. 23 at Bates Nut Farm, 15954 Woods Valley Road. Proceeds will benefit walkers in the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Breast Cancer 3-Day.

Live music will be performed by the Slidewinders and Calico Ridge bands. The evening will include a silent auction and desserts provided by the Woman's Club. Tickets can be purchased from participating 3-Day walkers, volunteers and at Bates Nut Farm.

Poetry reading set for Aug. 17

ESCONDIDO ---- A poetry reading event will be held Aug. 17 at the Escondido Municipal Gallery, 262 E. Grand Ave.

A reception will begin at 12:30 p.m., and Las Vegas poet Kenneth Wanamaker will be the featured poet, reading from 1-3 p.m. An open reading will follow. Attendees are invited to bring a few poems or short written pieces. Call (760) 480-4101.

Volunteer Mac instructors sought

ESCONDIDO ---- The Senior Service Council is seeking volunteer Macintosh computer instructors. The computer lab has new Macintosh computers running the latest software on a broadband Internet connection, and help is needed to teach classes and develop class materials. Call (760) 480-0611.

Computer classes offered for seniors

ESCONDIDO ---- Registration for the Senior Service Council's September session of computer classes will be from 9 a.m.-noon starting Aug. 26.

Instruction is available in Apple Works, Microsoft Vista, XP, e-mail and the Internet. Classes will meet for 1 1/2 hours per week for eight weeks, with only three students per instructor.

'Senior Savvy Day' set for Aug. 28

LAKE SAN MARCOS ---- Professional Services Group will host a free luncheon for seniors from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 28 in the Gallery Room at the Lake San Marcos Resort.

"Senior Savvy Day@the Lake San Marcos Resort" will feature a panel of professionals in senior health care, spearheaded by Dr. Joseph Czvik of Primary Care Medical Associates.

Janet Little of Henry's Farmers Market will speak on "Rebuilding Your Digestive Tract." Tamara Urie, event programmer for the Cardiovascular Disease Foundation, will do free body fat, blood pressure and cholesterol screenings. There also will be time for questions.

Doctor to share weight-loss story at seminar

ESCONDIDO ---- Dr. Nick Yphantides will conduct a free seminar titled "Are You in Need Of A Big Fat Greek Miracle?" at 7 p.m. Sept. 9 in the high school amphitheater of Emmanuel Faith Community Church, 639 E. Felicita Ave. Yphantides will talk about how he, a medical doctor, lost 270 pounds without surgery and has kept it off for more than seven years.
