Tri-City Computer Club to meet
OCEANSIDE ---- Tri-City Computer Club will meet from 1-3 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Salvation Army Community Center, 3935 Lake Blvd. The club will present a video presentation of Google Earth and Sky. Call (760) 433-8097.
Virtual bowling, Western Day at senior center
OCEANSIDE ---- SCAN Health Plan will sponsor a virtual video bowling event from 10 a.m.-noon Aug. 20 at the Oceanside Senior Center, 455 Country Club Lane. Participants will use the Wii Remote Control and bowl a 10-pin, 10-frame game. Wii is a video game console developed and produced by Nintendo. Small prizes will be awarded. If enough interest is shown, the center will schedule virtual bowling monthly.
From 11:15 a.m.-noon Aug. 21, the senior center will hold Western Day. Those wearing Western clothes get lunch for $1. Menu features barbecued pork ribettes, baked beans and potato salad. Call (760) 435-5250.
Salvation Army holds carnival
OCEANSIDE ---- The Salvation Army will hold its annual carnival from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 23 at 3935 Lake Blvd., with food, games, bingo, prizes and a silent auction. All proceeds support the work of the Salvation Army. Call (760) 631-8212.
Bike ride benefits Voices for Children
OCEANSIDE ---- TrackYourDeeds, Inc. will hold "Beach Cruise for a Cause," a bike ride to raise donations for Voices for Children, at 10 a.m. Aug. 30. Voices for Children is a nonprofit organization that works to ensure that children who have become dependents of the San Diego County Court will have a safe, permanent home. Beach Cruise for a Cause begins at 290 Seagaze Drive, upper level of parking structure; and ends at Hensley's Bar and Grill, 850 Tamarack Ave., Carlsbad. Donation is $5 per rider. Every $5 donation buys a raffle ticket for a chance to win an Electra Beach Cruiser.

Entertainment center celebrates bowling week
VISTA ---- Vista Entertainment Center is celebrating National Bowling Week, Aug. 25-29, by offering free bowling instruction from 9:30-11 a.m. Monday through Friday that week. Cheryl Robinson, former Women's Professional Bowling Association champion and Southern California Hall of Famer, as well as Andy Neeman, pro shop operator, will be on hand offering bowling tips. The public is invited to see the newly remodeled bowling entertainment center and banquet facility at 435 W. Vista Way. Bus stops added at Boys & Girls Club
VISTA ---- The Boys & Girls Club of Vista has announced that buses on all Vista Unified School District Elementary School routes will stop this school year at the club beginning Aug. 25, the first day of school.
Children who do not ride the bus can sign up to attend the club and ride the bus on a space available basis. All students will be required to complete membership and permission slip forms, available at the club.
This service is not available to Olive, Maryland and Bobier elementary schools, as they have no bus service. However, the club will be working with the PTAs of those schools to enable those students to get to the club, too.
The Boys & Girls Club of Vista provides a variety of supervised programs including art, recreation, music and drama. The club also provides coaching for basketball, baseball and soccer. Karate also is available.
During the school year, all members participate in Power Hour, a homework program.

Vista clinic offers dental exams for kids

Carlsbad Woman's Club holds dance

New Library Learning Center to open
CARLSBAD ---- Carlsbad City Library will celebrate the grand opening of its 11,000-square-foot Library Learning Center from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 23 at the center, 3368 Eureka Place. The event will feature tours, music, crafts, story times and refreshments. The center will provide a library collection for all ages; literacy tutoring; homework assistance and study rooms; public computer access and computer classes; bilingual (English/Spanish) services; and programs for children and families. The center's hours will be 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and 11a.m.-5 p.m. Fridays, with literacy tutoring appointments available mornings and evenings. Workshop to focus on 'Five Flavors of Health'
ENCINITAS ---- Quail Botanical Gardens will offer a "Five Flavors of Health" workshop, led by herbal educator Charlotte Tenney, from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Aug. 23 at the gardens, 230 Quail Gardens Drive. Participants will go on a plant ID walk to learn about the nutritional and health value of "functional food" plants and the five flavors of health ---- sweet, sour, bitter, salty and pungent/spicy ---- which indicate the food's health value. Quail Gardens to host watercolor workshop
ENCINITAS ---- A watercolor workshop with artist Helen Shafer Garcia will be held from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 24 at Quail Botanical Gardens, 230 Quail Gardens Drive. Known for her beautiful paintings of plants, Garcia will teach a contemporary approach to watercolor, focusing on garden botanical elements. The class will spend time painting in the gardens.
