'Kut-A-Thon' to help fight breast cancer

ESCONDIDO ---- Kids Kuts of Escondido, 1210 Auto Park Way, will hold its seventh annual "Kut-A-Thon" from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 17 to benefit the fight against breast cancer.

Kids Kuts owner Delores Zamora is team captain of Liz's Camo Queens (formerly the Princess Blister Sisters), who will walk in their seventh Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day walk in November. The team has raised about $280,000 for breast cancer research since participating in its first walk in 2001 and will reach $313,000 by this year's walk.

Kids Kut stylists will volunteer their time and donate all money earned at the "Kut-A-Thon" to the breast cancer cause. Appointments are recommended. Call (760) 432-8933.

Downtown Escondido walking tour set

ESCONDIDO ---- Join longtime resident Hugh Young for a free walking tour of downtown Escondido on Aug. 19. Learn about the heart of the city and business community, with roots dating to 1886, on the trek along Grand Avenue. Meet at 6 p.m on the southeast corner of Grand Avenue at Broadway.

The Escondido History Center and the Escondido Citizens Ecology Committee have jointly sponsored free walking tours of historical Escondido since 1992. Five different routes are offered throughout the year. Call the Escondido History Center at (760) 743-8207.

History discussion set for Aug. 19

ESCONDIDO ---- The San Pasqual Battlefield Volunteer Association will sponsor a free history discussion on Gen. Business Builders Network to meet

LAKE SAN MARCOS ---- Business Builders Network will meet at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 19 in the Trophy Room at the Lake San Marcos Resort & Country Club, 1025 La Bonita Drive.

Chris Bunn of Toyota of Escondido will speak on "Wise Vehicle Choices in 2008," and Alan Willingham of Cornerstone Client Greetings will discuss "Building Lasting Customer Relationships."

Afternoon swim classes offered

RANCHO PENASQUITOS ---- The Rancho Family YMCA, 9410 Fairgrove Lane, will offer parent and tot-through-school-age swim classes between 3:15 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, Aug. 18-29.

Swim instruction is offered year-round at the YMCA's covered heated pool. Other year-round preschool and youth programs include cricket, basketball, soccer, baseball programs and leagues, gymnastics, dance and martial arts. The fall session will begin Sept. 2. Registration will begin Aug. 18 for members; Aug. 25 for nonmembers.

In addition, the YMCA will host an Open House Carnival from noon-3 p.m. Aug 30, with activities and membership specials.

Get help with Social Security applications

NORTH COUNTY ---- Representatives from the Social Security Administration will be available to assist with online applications for retirement and disability benefits from 9-11 a.m. Aug. 20 at the Escondido Public Library's Pioneer Room, 247 S. Kalmia St.; from 8-9:30 a.m. Aug. 27 at the Poway Library, 13137 Poway Road; and from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Valley Center Library, 29200 Cole Grade Road.

Support available for bereaved parents

POWAY ---- A new chapter of Bereaved Parents of the USA has been launched in North County. The San Diego North Inland Chapter meets at 7 p.m. the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, 16275 Pomerado Road.

Bereaved Parents of the USA is a national nonprofit self-help group that offers support, understanding, compassion and hope to bereaved parents, grandparents and siblings after the death of a child, grandchild or sibling. There are no membership dues or fees. All work is done by volunteer bereaved parents.

Gourd art class offered Sept. 6

ESCONDIDO ---- The Baiamonte Gourd Farm will offer a gourd art class from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 6. Learn how to properly select, handle and clean gourds; mark and cut intricate details; clean the inside of the gourd; strengthen weak walls; and seal and apply a lasting finish. Registration under way at Escondido Adult School

ESCONDIDO ---- Escondido Adult School is accepting registration for fall classes. The school offers a variety of enrichment and special interest classes, as well as computer, career and technical classes. New classes include "Sculpting in Stone," "Home Repair," "Upholstery Art Basics," "Digital Photography for Beginners," "Web Blogs," "Printmaking," "Thai Cooking" and "Thai Dancing."

MOPS group forming in RB

RANCHO BERNARDO ---- The Church at Rancho Bernardo has formed a Mothers of Preschoolers group. Meetings will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays beginning Sept. 23 at The Church at Rancho Bernardo, 11740 Bernardo Plaza Court. Child care will be available. MOPS aims to encourage mothers of preschoolers to realize their potential. Meetings will include intimate discussions in a safe small-group atmosphere, practical and life applicable teachings, and creative activities.

Sport, fitness classes offered

SAN MARCOS ---- The city's Community Services Department will offer these sport and fitness classes starting in September. Unless otherwise noted, classes will be at the San Marcos Community Center, 3 Civic Center Drive. The schedule:

-- Tae Kwon Do for ages 4-adult is held Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Cost is $65 per month; $50 for "Little Dragons."

-- Tennis instruction for ages 8-adult is offered Monday and Wednesday evenings at Las Posas Park in San Marcos. Cost is $40 per session.

-- Mommy and Me Workout for moms and kids ages 10 months to 2 1/2 years is offered from 10:45-11:30 a.m. Thursdays. Cost is $36 per session.

-- Jazzercise is at 8 and 9 a.m. Saturdays and 5:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the San Elijo Recreation Center. Cost is $92 for an eight-week class pass; $35 per month for an unlimited pass; or $10 per class.

-- Tappercize combines low-impact aerobics with simple tap dancing steps. No experience is necessary. Classes are held on Monday afternoons and Thursday mornings. Cost is $25 per month.

-- Zumba fitness, a Latin-inspired dance-fitness class for adults, is held on Monday and Thursday evenings. Cost is $40 per month; $60 per month for unlimited classes.

Senior dances held Tuesdays

ESCONDIDO ---- Dances for seniors are held from 1-3 p.m. Tuesdays at the Joslyn Senior Center, 210 E. Park Ave. Live music is provided by the Stardust Harmonaires, under the direction of Pete Atilano. Seniors sought to help in schools

NORTH COUNTY ---- The Seniors Helping Our Kids program is seeking senior volunteers to spend one hour a week helping a child in reading or other subjects at elementary schools in Rancho Bernardo, Poway and Rancho Penasquitos. No experience is required. Call (858) 485-5449.

Center provides educational services

NORTH COUNTY ---- Palomar College's North County Educational Opportunity Center helps adults interested in entering, re-entering, continuing or enrolling in a college or adult school. Services include academic advisement; assistance in completing college admissions applications; financial aid information and application/renewal assistance; and GED/high school diploma program referrals.

Volunteers sought to give seniors a lift

NORTH COUNTY ---- Rides and Smiles is seeking volunteers to drive seniors in the Rancho Bernardo, Poway and Rancho Penasquitos areas to medical appointments or on errands.
