Straight talk on Marina Towers
Let's set the record straight! Tom Garcia's letter of Aug. 8 implied that the city of Oceanside owns the individual condo units in Marina Towers and that the residents bought the units for about $75,000 per unit. Nothing could be further from the truth. The residents of Marina Towers own their individual condos. The city owns the acre of land beneath the Towers. The residents pay the city $57,000 a year in fees to lease that land.
By paying $5 million to purchase the city-owned land, the residents are giving the city cash in this time of extreme economic hardship. This cash will make it possible to continue much-needed city services. Four City Council members voted to sell the property to the residents: Jerry Kern, Jack Feller, Esther Sanchez and Mayor Jim Wood.
We in the original Oceana have a similar situation. We own the land beneath our condos, but we do not own the common ground. This ownership has given our leaseholder an income in excess of $500,000 a year, paid by the Oceana residents for leased land. I know of the drawbacks of this ownership structure. We are happy for the residents of Marina Towers. This transaction was a win-win for the residents and the city.

Whom does the NCT endorse?
I would like to know whether your newspaper is endorsing a particular candidate. The reason for my inquiry stems from the fact that on two recent occasions, the North County Times has printed photos of the candidates in such a fashion that implies McCain is your man. Note the June 25 paper, "Obama assails remarks by McCain on drilling." Yet the photograph chosen of McCain is at least 10 times larger than that of Obama.
In another edition, a photo was printed of McCain smiling as he and his wife exited an airplane, while the picture your paper chose to print of Obama was Obama grimacing while Al Gore, former vice president, endorsed him.
It seems evident which candidate your newspaper prefers by these photo journal selections. I would prefer an open-handed approach. Please endorse a candidate now or give similar photo ops for both candidates. Otherwise you may lose a subscriber.
Furthermore, I consider McCain's true name to be McSame (that is, the same as George W. Bush) and a derivative of Cain in the Bible, and we know what became of him.

'I pray it's not Obama'
Due to limited space, I want to expand on my last letter (July 30). Obama's political roots are mired in left-wing socialism. As for the "ahs," this indicates to me that he cannot think on his feet. Inexperience. If you heard him with the reporter in Las Vegas, when he was challenged, you know what I mean? He gets frustrated and can't speak. Is this what you want in a president when he has to deal with foreign leaders? Not me.
I don't know who's going to win, but I pray it's not Obama. Please, those of you who are undecided, know the real Obama, not the hype. I'm not preaching to the choir or to liberals. They've made up their minds. Do you really want Obama as president, along with two of the worst people ever running Congress, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid? Obama is proposing trillions of dollars in handouts and government spending. Taxes –– slap!
By the way, I have a great idea to solve the energy crisis. Let's put wind turbines on the acres belonging to rich liberals. Al Gore first, Hollywood second.

Guadalcanal vets owed an apology
Recently you published an article about the invasion of Guadalcanal in which you spoke of the "Marines and allied forces." What allies? The only men off the ramps of the assault boats were American Marines. Even though you gleaned the article off the Associated Press wire service, it was printed in your paper and your editors are responsible for its accuracy.
Is this mistake part of the globaloney agenda? What is next, how the British Royal Navy won the Battle of Midway? The American media is in a sorry state. Dr. Goebbels would be proud! You owe the Marines (dead and a handful of living) who survived Guadalcanal an apology.

They want the treatment, but don't want to pay
On Aug. 2, between the North County Times and another big-city newspaper competitor, there were five letters criticizing Tri-City Medical Center for trying to pass bond measure A, basically saying the same thing. Several are from the Shadowridge area and frequently criticize the hospital for treating illegals, Hispanics and citizens who have no other medical resources. They're ranting that they are getting free treatment. It is ironic that some Shadowridge residents want the hospital service and not pay into the district. They say it is a financial strain. They are leeches on the rest of us. They want the treatment but don't want to pay, just like they say ... others with no resources are getting. These complainers are guilty of the same crime they are accusing [others] of –– receiving care without payment.
When the ambulance arrives at their door, are they going to go to the nearest medical facility when they are having a heart attack, or will they go to the emergency room at a hospital 30 minutes further! To continue excellent care, the hospital has to construct and renovate buildings to earthquake standards by 2013. These will expand the emergency department and build cardiovascular and neurology departments and womens and children's services. Tri-City Medical Center requires long-overdue improvements. Vote for Proposition A. Your life may depend on it!

What kind of message is McCain sending?
When Sen. John McCain proposed a solution for failing public schools, he suggested that parents be given vouchers for students to be enrolled in other public or private schools. This would be at taxpayer expense and would probably be for transportation, too. What kind of message does this send to the neighborhood where the children live? What happens to the school and the students left behind?
Instead of admitting failure, why not make the failing school into a symbol of pride for the neighborhood with the recruitment of innovative administrators and teachers, the hiring of security guards to prevent vandalism and the involvement of local businesses with rewards and prizes for high achievers? Corporate participation could be in the form of scholarships for student success that would be available upon completing high school.
These changes would cost far less than the voucher solution. Parent participation, which has been shown to be a key factor in student progress, would be easier when the school is in the same area as the home. Instead of giving up and moving out, why not take the challenge and show what can happen when a community of businesses, administrators, parents, teachers and students all work together to make a school really work?

Parade problem solved
Regarding "Prospects improving for Christmas parade," Aug. 11: Let's stick with inexpensive routes and limits on man hours. Have the parade at one of the high school football fields. Problem solved. Staging area, parking, etc. No worries about the merchants. They can be open for those who don't attend the parade.
If this suggestion isn't acceptable, it's because this entire issue was bogus from the beginning. ... Other towns do this, and their parades are larger and better than Escondido's. Chief Maher, don't forget to vote in November 2008. Clean house. ...

Vote no on Prop. A because it's not fair
No matter how you vote on Proposition A, your vote should count. If you do not vote, how can it count? A letter just a few days ago (Aug. 11) stated that if your ballot is not returned, it will be counted as a yes vote. Is this possible? How can a ballot be counted as a yes or no if it is not returned? Sounds unconstitutional to me.
We voted no for the same reason that we voted no on the last two bond offerings of Tri-City Hospital. It simply is not fair that only portions of the cities are in the hospital district. Shame on the city and hospital for not keeping the boundaries up to date as the cities have grown.

Majority want Prop. A to pass
Straight to the point, Proposition A will: Expand and upgrade the emergency room, modernize the Intensive Care Unit, build a new urgent-care facility and provide advanced medical technology.
Opponents assert that voters have failed to back this bond twice before. There is a clear fallacy in this comment. Two previous bond measures have gained 65 percent and 66 percent support –– that clearly shows a large majority of voters who want this bond to pass.
Here#'s the bottom line: All this will cost very little. According to the County Assessor, the assessed value of the average residence in the district is about $240,000. This, coupled with the large tax base in the district, means it will cost about $53 a year for the average homeowner. That#'s it. A modern, seismically compliant medical center for less than $5 month. Remember, this is based on assessed value, not appraised or current market value. The assessed value of property is often much lower than its market value.
I urge those who feel strongly in favor of maintaining quality health care in North County to vote yes for Proposition A. Let's truly let the majority be heard this time!

Memorial to vet merits a 'well done'
If you were traveling on the streets of San Marcos Sunday, Aug. 10, you perhaps noticed there was less traffic visible. You would be right. A large crowd of people had poured into the VFW Post 3795 on Mission Avenue. A memorial service was being held for a well-liked veteran, Herb Ranquist.
Herb, a former Navy chief, his dress uniform proudly displayed, was extolled by many in attendance, testifying to his character, sense of humor and just knowing Herb was there as assurance the job would be done. Harvey Benne of Escondido performed the "Ragged Old Flag," which he does so well. We sang the National Anthem and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. A flag, reverently folded, was presented to the family. Background music included "Amazing Grace," the Navy Hymn, Herb's favorite song, "Wind Beneath My Wings," sung by Bette Midler and concluding with taps. Cmdr. Virgil Griffin got the ball rolling, backed by several of the post's officers. We then adjourned for a delicious potluck. A loud "well done" to Post 3795, and its Ladies Auxiliary. In case you hadn't noticed, there are some fine people who visit the San Marcos VFW Post. P.S.: The traffic is now flowing smoothly again.

Scare tactics won't change 'no' vote
OK, I have had enough of the demands and scare tactics that say we have to vote for Prop. A. For people who complain the rooms are too small, this is a hospital, not a hotel. For those who say we can't get good health care unless we rebuild almost an entirely new hospital, all the letters I read about Tri-City are complimentary.
I have used the ER and received the finest of care. For regular medical care, however, thousands of us will never step foot in this facility because our insurance is at other hospitals. The issue about earthquake safety is also a scare tactic. The hospital may not need to retrofit, and if they did, the deadline is 2030. The worst of the scare tactics –– the wait in the ER is too long. A recent article stated that Tri-City had the shortest waiting time in the ER in North County ("Average ER waiting time nears 1 hour, CDC says," Aug. 7). The average time is 24 minutes, according to Tri-City.
You can't scare people into the voting for this bond. It's the wrong bond at the wrong time. Please vote no on Prop. A and remember to return your ballot in the mail.

Litter abounds in College Park
I have lived in the Tri-City area for many years, and the College Park area has not changed much over 20 years. However, lately, whenever I jog, I now take a trash bag with me. But if the city wanted to, they could catch some of these litterbugs and fine them.
I am talking about the people who have garage sale signs taped to every tree and pole in sight and then never come and take them down. All the code guy would have to do is go to the address on the sign –– bingo! Busted. No more trash in the street.

Reality check for skeptics
A reality check for those global-warming conspiracists whose theory letters contrast sharply with actual news reports of real world events. Redundant argument is a one-trick pony beaten into the mud of political myopia and unabashed ignorance. Their favorite stereotype is "alarmist" for those, including the media, who dare mention "global warming." Their self-proclaimed "patriotic" attitude would have shot Paul Revere out of the saddle.
"In Greed We Trust?" A real conspiracy is Big Oil, corporate lobbyists and accomplice government administrators painting our nation into an economic corner via oil dependency while inducing foreign competition for our main energy source. Read the galling report in the North County Times: "China announces more pollution controls for Olympics," Aug. 1. Embarrassed Communist officials scramble to artificially scrub Beijing's air for the Olympic Games, shuttering scores of factories and reducing vehicle traffic by up to 90 percent, affecting provincial millions.
"Massive ice sheet breaks loose in Canada," July 30, per the middle article in the green column: The Canadian Ward Hunt Ice Shelf lost a 7-square-mile chunk last week. (Note: the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica lost a Rhode Island-sized chunk this decade. Possibly a trend?) Sweet dreams; don't forget to set the alarm.

CHP should use BP checkpoints
Driving on public streets is a privilege, one that requires some skill. Every driver should meet the requirements and every city should have checkpoints to enforce the law. Biased NCT reporting shameful
It is shameful that you would print a poll favorable to Barack Hussein Obama and not report the rest of the polls. You failed to report on the recent Rasmussen and Zogby polls that show McCain ahead. You are the North County Times, not the New York or L.A. Times. It is a tight race, and that is what should be the story. This country needs this debate.
The N.C. Times should be reporting and not creating the story by what you left out. Corny or not, you have a "sacred" duty to not be a part of the story, just report it. By not reporting the whole story, showing all the major polling results and only showing those favorable to one candidate, you could be hurting that candidate and this desperately needed debate, interjecting a mood of complacency into their camp.
I am not asking. We the people demand that our newspaper report all of the news, not just the news it likes!

Iran merits scrutiny of its actions
In regards to Dolores Wiener's statement, "Anyone who supports Iran over the U.S. and Israel had better examine their motives" (Letters, Aug. 11) –– Well, Dolores, I did examine my motives and this is what I found. Of the three countries, only Iran has signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. According to Iranian Ambassador Ali Soltanien, Iran will welcome "extensive nuclear inspections" if Israel will agree to the same inspections.
When Ambassador Soltanien suggested a Mid-East nuclear free zone, our government's reply was,"This is not the time," for these discussions (will there ever be a time?). There is no doubt that a lot of the problems in the Mid-East would not exist if our double standard favoring Israel, especially over the Palestinians, would end.
So, Dolores, my motives are to bring peace to the Middle East by having the U.S. take a more fair and balanced stand in the area. Since Iran, the rest of the Arab nations and a great many Americans want this to happen, it just might succeed. Why don't you join us?

Editorial on checkpoints was ridiculous
The Aug. 14 editorial ("Checkpoints' value needs serious look") questions whether enforcing our laws is worth the cost. Have you ever heard such a ridiculous question? Are we to judge the response to this question by the economic revenue returned to the city by each action?
How much is returned to the city coffers when a drug bust occurs? How much is returned to the city coffers when a robbery is foiled? What about the cost of constant patrols when the day ends without any arrest at all? What is the economic gain to the city when a child molester is arrested?
It is just plain ridiculous to take the position that enforcement of driving laws does not return enough money to the city to justify the action. Return on investment is the last measure that should be considered in evaluation of our police department.

Checkpoint editorial was wrong
The Aug. 14 editorial, "Checkpoints' value needs serious look," left me wondering whether the North County Times is more concerned about the public's safety and well-being, or are they trying to undermine the public's confidence in local law enforcement.
The editorial's final paragraph, reads in part, "In short, do the ends justify the means, or are we ending up with an entirely different problem?" Maybe it will take having someone of the N.C. Times' staff to be victimized by a hit-and-run accident, or worse yet, be seriously injured or killed by an unlicensed or otherwise illegal driver before the editors come to their senses and campaign for stricter enforcement.
Let's not ignore the fact that many of the vehicles in these checkpoints are not safe enough to be driven on our public roadways. Most "fender-benders" cost the car's owner, or their insurance company, thousands of dollars in repairs. The cost to unlawful drivers in penalties and impound fees pales, compared with paying damages and paying medical fees. We owe it to ourselves to support the efforts of our police department when it comes to strict enforcement of these violations.

Writer responds to writer's writings
Responding to Peggy Sloan's letter of Aug. 1: Peggy, Peggy, Peggy, you seem so angry. That is not good for your health. You are mad at William Ficere, Darrell Beck and me; is it because of our letters or because the bloom is falling off the Obama rose?
The latest negative is Barrack's association and praise of Ludacris and his latest rap recording. Obama's past associations are slowly but surely bringing him down (and rightfully so). The old proverb that comes to mind: "You are judged by the company you keep." [Offensive words] are not a part of my language, but apparently flow freely from Ludacris. Obama admires him and his talent. Peggy, as for my letters having no "facts or meat" –– yours have?

She says she doesn’t want a President who can’t speak or think on his feet. Has she seen any of Bush’s press conferences in the past eight years? To say that Bush is the most inarticulate President in our history would not be a stretch.
She says that Obama is proposing trillions of dollars in handouts and government spending. Under Bush and the Republican controlled Congress (the Party of fiscal discipline, mind you) we had record spending, record deficits, and increased the national debt in six years by almost as much as it took all previous Presidents and Congresses to do in 230 years.
At least the Democrats are honest in proposing taxing and spending. As opposed to the Republican’s shameful borrowing and spending, which was not exactly conservative long-term strategic thinking.

Sarah Turitto, an Obama supporter, complaining about photo choices, and Arlan Brown, a McCain supporter, complaining about poll inclusions.
One threatens to cut her subscription; the other makes demands on a newspaper he does not own. Interesting to note that the Democrat is using market forces to bring influence while the Republican sees some sort of civil rights abridgement.
Truly a world upside down.
Through the Fog wrote on Aug 17, 2008 6:38 AM:Somehow, momentarily coming out of her BCS stupor, Jean Carroll has accidentally stumbled onto the best rationale to vote for McCain. That being divided government.
If McCain can bring himself to say to the American people, “The Democrats are going to retain control of Congress, you remember what it was like when one Party (the Republicans) controlled the government in the first six years of the Bush Administration, do you really want one Party (the Democrats) to do the same for the foreseeable future?”, he could induce ticket splitting on a massive scale.
It is my opinion that this one issue will indeed sway the undecided voters away from Obama, handing the election to McCain, and maintaining the gridlock we love to hate but is actually in the best interest of all of us.
As I’ve said before, a day when the President and Congress do nothing is, on the whole, a good day for America.

Ayers is so toxic to Obama, because his own written record of equating U.S. Marines with terrorists. We see that almost daily with our buddy "Chris" here.
And then we still have 20 year friend,

Rashid Khalidi founder of the Arab American Action Network (AAAN), a group associated with confrontational statements of support for Palestinians and antagonism toward Israel. In 2001 and again in 2002, the Woods Fund of Chicago, with directors Ayers and Obama, made grants of $40,000 and $35,000 to the AAAN. Mr. Khalidi also served Yasser Arafat's PLO at the Madrid conference in 1991.

You see, there is a certain group of education professionals who view the school system as "Their's." OBAMACAN wrote on Aug 17, 2008 10:23 AM:There goes Ron again, at 9:41 a.m., in his utter frustration and desperation, with the cheap labels, baseless name calling and attacking everyone but the candidate himself.
1. You repeat the false and baseless charge that Obama promotes socialist policies, but you never actually cite specific examples rooted in the economics of socialism, which I doubt you even understand.
2. You claim ties to Frank Marshall Davis, a man who was a friend of Obama's World War II vet (white) grandfather, who Obama knew in Hawaii during his youth. THE MAN HAS BEEN DEAD FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS. He was a poet and something of a colorful character and, yes, like many from the 1930's era, he had been a member of the Communist Party, but he was just a lowly poet and writer. His association with young Barack was social, in the waning days of a beach bum poet.
3. Yet again, in your desperation, you continue to list names of people who had some problems, NONE OF WHICH INVOLVED OBAMA. By the time someone becomes a presidential candidate, they have met a lot of people, and some of them will have turned out to have a few skeletons in their closet. The only thing that matters is if some of those skeletons belong to the candidate. None belong to Obama. But let's see how Ron's favored Candidate, McSame, measures up to the Ron standard: McBlame was at the center the scandals involving Charles Keating and Lincoln Savings, trading influences for financial support and writing letters for Keating directly related to his corrupt operations. Unlike Obama's NON-POLITICAL involvement with his own pastor, which was purely religious, McPain's involvement with preachers Rod Parsley, John Hagee, and of course Robertson and Falwell, all of whom made anti-American and bigoted statements far worse than anything Obama's pastor ever said, was 100% political as McStain sought them out ONLY for POLITICAL support.
Ron will do anything to try to avoid discussing the corrupt Washington insider status of McSenile's tainted public life, and when it comes to his personal infidelities and betrayals of sacred oaths (and lying about it THIS YEAR), Ron hems and haws and squirms and wiggles and points his finger at the other guy.
Want to talk about the economy? The failed war in Iraq? How Big Oil used their own guys in the White House to squeeze and gouge American consumers? Same with Big Pharma and Big Healthcare?
Only those who have profiteered off the billions in defense spending and the transfer of wealth from working people to fat cats would want to push for more of the McSame.

Ron wrote on Aug 17, 2008 10:35 AM:The fact of the matter, "Through the Past Darkly" @5:42 AM, I've already addressed this issue, days ago.
According to a study done recently, the Obama plan will create another $3.4 trillion on top of the $9 we have now, and the McCain plan will create another $5 trillion. I said at the time, pick your deficit.
Obama is proposing trillions of dollars in handouts and government spending, and he, according to his plan, will not have enough revenue just taxing "the Rich." Hence, I always refer back to 93' and a Democrat Congress plus Clinton. What did they do? That's right!!! Taxed all the way down to the $33,000 level. Which is what Obama will do, when it is all said and done. He'll be forced to, by these Old Bull's in the Congress who have been waiting for years now, to make their own mark on history.
And I know how you guy's just love to talk about this $9 trillion debt, as if that is the only concern. I have news for you, it is not. FDR started us down the path of this Ponzi Scheme, this inter-generational ponzi scheme which at the moment rises about $2 trillion each year we fail to act, and at present represents some $54 trillion in out year liabilities.
LBJ added to this coming disaster by his MediCare/MediCaid Great Society morass. And GWB has yet added to it again with his drug benefit.
Now, you can talk about 230 years of fiscal history, but the $9 trillion compared to our current GDP, comparing that with FDR and the debt created by WWII, are very similar. In short, we are able to fund short term expenses, like wars, by borrowing. Long term expenses like SS, MediCare can not be.
that would be like buying your groceries on a credit card. You can do it, but it's not wise. We've not been wise for a very long time, and now the ONLY option Democrats have to "fix" this, it to TAX EVERYTHING that moves.
Raise the cap's, tax it all. It will be the 20th time we will have raised the taxes on these programs. The last 19 times, all done by Democrats.
The true legacy of the Democrat party is these entitlement programs, that year after year, we borrow more & more money with interest.
So, you can talk about this measely $9 trillion for now, when the Big Bill hits, remember I told you al this. OK?

Back in 2000, when Obama was a state senator in Illinois, an entrepreneur named Robert Blackwell Jr. hired him to be his lawyer, paying him a monthly retainer of $8,000 — big money for a part-time legislator with an annual salary of just $58,000. A few months later, Obama sent a letter urging state tourism officials to give a grant to one of Blackwell's companies, the amusingly named Killerspin, to fund a table-tennis tournament. Killerspin received $320,000 in public funds; Obama pocketed $112,000 in fees from Blackwell.
So far this year, Blackwell has bundled more than $100,000 for Obama's campaign. Looks like there's going to be a shitload of table-tennis tournaments all across America next year.
Obama also supported the Freddie Mac-Fannie Mae rescue, and that, too, is no surprise, given that he hired one former chairman of Fannie Mae to chair his vice presidential vetting panel and hired another former Fannie Mae chairman to serve as his consultant on housing issues. Most of us will never get within a hundred miles of a single Fannie Mae chairman, but Obama has already hired two — and he isn't even president yet.
You see folks, Obama is just as slimey as the rest of the Politicians.

Lobbyist do concern me, it is, however, found in the Constitution, perhaps not the model we find it today. I think we have lobbying on steriods, just one man's opinion.
But, I believe it is so, because there is SOOOOOOO much money lying on the table in Washington. When Washington invloves itself into areas rightly given over to the States, by the Constitution, it will bring about the teat sucklers.
Further, when you have through regulation devolved our market system into a failed form of merchantilism, business's feel they must go to Washington to seek priveledge, and a "one up man-ship" on other's.

Economy & taxes: the one that wants to provide middle class tax relief and provide subsidies to help rust belt auto manufacturers retool for green cars and who understands that economic prosperity does not "trickle down" from the rich but bubbles up from consumers and workers, or the one who can't fix the economy because he does not even know it is broken and whose top economic advisor was the author of both the subprime lending deregulation and the deregulation of oil speculators, and who blamed middle Americans for bein a "nation of whiners"?
