Center provides educational services

NORTH COUNTY ---- Palomar College's North County Educational Opportunity Center assists adults interested in entering, re-entering, continuing or enrolling in a college or adult school. Ostomy support group to meet

OCEANSIDE ---- The Ostomy Support Group of North San Diego County will meet at 1 p.m. Aug. 22 in Assembly Room 1, Lower Level, Tri City Medical Center, 4002 Vista Way. Genealogical society to meet

CARLSBAD ---- The North San Diego County Genealogical Society will meet from 10-11:30 a.m. Aug. 26 at the Carlsbad City Council Chambers, 1200 Carlsbad Village Way.

Professional genealogist Gena Philibert Ortega will speak on "California Dreamin'," discussing California repositories and archives, public and private libraries, museums and other state resources that can benefit researchers with or without California ancestors.

Ortega is a genealogical lecturer, instructor and author who writes for the online newsletter Genweekly, published by Genealogy Today.

Computer group to meet

OCEANSIDE ---- "Googling Around: Everything You Didn't Know You Could Do with Google" will be the program for the meeting of the Oceanside Macintosh User Group at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at Oceana Clubhouse Auditorium, 550 Vista Bella.

Club member Bill Colburn, a math department faculty member at Palomar and MiraCosta colleges, will show how to make the most of Google searches.

Needlepoint group to meet

ESCONDIDO ---- The Palomar Mountain chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild will meet at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at Redwood Elderlink, 1151 S. Fallbrook team wins close cribbage match

FALLBROOK ---- Recently, 41 cribbage players participated in the monthly Senior Challenge Cribbage match at the Vista Elks Lodge.

In a close match, a one-win difference separated the winning Fallbrook team from the Oceanside team. The top winner was Tom Waterbury on the Oceanside team, who won all seven of his games. In second place was Fallbrook's Ed Wozniak who, for the second straight month, had six wins with two skunks. In third was Willie Williams with five wins and two skunks.

Rounding out the top six places were Luella Brotherton, Ted Moody and Eileen Haworth, who each had five wins and one skunk. Wilf Ash of the winning Fallbrook team won the $25 gift card donated by Ralphs.

Single Travelers Club to meet Aug. 26

CARLSBAD ---- The Single Travelers Club is a small, local nonprofit organization that meets monthly to discuss travel opportunities. It formed specifically to help people meet like-minded folks for travel discussion, and since the single supplement charged for solo travelers is so high, members are trying to find a way to avoid the penalty.

Meetings usually take place at a restaurant so participants can enjoy refreshments, food and talk about travel. Meetings feature a guest speaker, and the organization has a monthly newsletter.

The next meeting will be from 5-7 p.m. Aug. 26 at Bellefleur Restaurant, 5610 Paseo del Norte, Suite 100-B in the Carlsbad Outlet Mall off Palomar Airport Road. Reserve by Aug. 25 to Rita Love at (760) 721-8412.

Handweavers group to meet

OCEANSIDE ---- The Palomar Handweavers' Guild will meet from 7-9 p.m. Aug. 26 at a member's home. The program will be on card weaving, also known as tablet weaving. This will be a hands-on program. Guests, including beginners, are welcome.

Book launch party set for Sept. 14

ENCINITAS ---- "Becka Goes to San Diego," fifth in the series of children’s books, "Becka and the Big Bubble," hits shelves nationwide in September. Barnes & Noble hosts a free launch party with authors Gretchen Schomer Wendel and Adam Schomer from 2-5 p.m. Sept. 14 p.m. at the New Ocean View Encinitas Library, 540 Cornish Drive.

Meet "Becka," be put inside a bubble, enjoy free wine, beer, juice and food, face painting, live music, walk away with a goodie bag and more. Books will be available for purchase (suggested retail price $11.99) at the party and 15 percent of proceeds go back to local schools.

Surf for the Sea event scheduled

OCEANSIDE ---- The 12th annual Surf for the Sea will take place Sept. 6 and 7 at the Oceanside Pier (north side).

Surf for the Sea commemorates Harry Bennett, Steve Leighton, Tore Bonura, Chuck "Clubber" Hundley, Banning Capps and John Craven, all local surfers who have passed away. This is a memorial benefit for the Surfrider Foundation, San Diego Chapter and other environmental organizations helping to protect our coast, ocean, waves and beaches.

Trophies will be awarded in 14 divisions. The entry fee is $40 for amateur and $80 for the Pro/Am Division. All competitors receive an event T-shirt, lunch catered by local restaurant Johnny Manana’s and a chance at the opportunity raffle including surfboards, wetsuits, and prizes provided by the surfing industry. Surf for the Sea also includes a beach clean-up.

Crawford Foundation plans fundraiser

SAN DIEGO ---- The Crawford Foundation will host a silent auction fundraiser with dinner and casino night entertainment from 5-10 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Crawford Educational Complex, 4191 Colts Way. This is in celebration of Crawford's 50th anniversary.

The evening includes buffet dinner, 10 free raffle tickets, silent auction and raffle items and casino night entertainment (blackjack, roulette, and craps, Texas Hold'em Tournament $20 buy-in.) There will be Crawford memorabilia, pictorial displays and more. Proceeds will go toward completion of funding required for a computer room in the school library, purchase of sports equipment and establishing scholarships.

Volunteer host families sought for international students

NORTH COUNTY ---- Cultural Homestay International is seeking local families to host foreign high school students for a year in America.

Students come from South America, Europe and Asia. Each student is paired with a family, considering a multitude of interests such as hobbies and personality, to help ensure a fun and successful year for both the student and the family. Host families should enjoy teenagers and be willing to treat their exchange student as a member of the family.

Italian association seeks members

NORTH COUNTY –– The North County Italian Association is a nonprofit organization that promotes Italian culture and provides scholarships for students of Italian descent.

The group meets monthly for fun activities including picnics, potluck dinners, game nights, theater and outings. They also play bocce and meet for lunch. The group welcomes anyone interested in the Italian culture.

Singles club seeks members

NORTH COUNTY ---- The North County Singles Social Club is looking for new members 55 and older. The club meets Fridays at the Vista Elks Lodge for dinner and dancing to live music. People can come as guests three times before deciding to join. Cost is $14.

Toastmasters groups meet

North County ---- Toastmasters International provides communication and leadership programs in a number of North County locations. Develop communication skills in a fun and friendly environment with lots of support and coaching.
