CARLSBAD: Arrest made in gas station stabbing

By North County Times | Friday, August 22, 2008 6:28 PM PDT

CARLSBAD ---- Police arrested a 35-year-old parolee suspected of carjacking one man then stabbing another man Friday morning, Carlsbad police spokeswoman Lynn Diamond said in a news release.

Rafael Chavez is accused of overtaking a man in his car in the 3300 block of Roosevelt Street, Diamond said. The car was about to run out of gas, so he allegedly ordered the man to stop at the Shell station at 1145 Carlsbad Village Drive, the release said.

Outside the station, Chavez allegedly stabbed a 50-year-old man during a robbery, Diamond said.

The robbery occurred at 6:51 a.m. The victim told police that he had just bought a coffee and roll at the shop and walked behind the station, where a man with a knife demanded his wallet, Carlsbad police Lt. Matt Magro said. A struggle ensued, and the assailant stabbed the victim several times, including at least twice in the torso, Magro said.

Police talked to the stabbing victim only briefly before was taken by helicopter to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Magro said. He had lost a lot of blood and initially his injuries were considered life-threatening. But he was stabilized at the hospital and is expected to recover.

Surveillance tape showed a man who entered the shop behind the victim and the same man speeding away in a car after the stabbing, Magro said. There is no tape of the actual stabbing.

The carjacking victim told police that, just after the stabbing, Chavez ordered him to drive to a residence in Vista. He complied and dropped the suspect off, then reported the crime at the San Marcos Sheriff's Station, Diamond said.

Sheriff's deputies and Carlsbad police officers arrested Chavez at the residence a short time later, Diamond said. He will be booked into Vista jail Friday night, said police Sgt. Keith Blackburn.

Police were serving a search warrant at the Vista residence later Friday and searching the car involved in the crimes, which is impounded, Blackburn said.

Brazen and Scary wrote on Aug 22, 2008 10:48 AM:Can't even get a doughnut and coffee without fear in Carlsbad? The thug probably lost his way from Oceanside, right? WRONG! Stay away from the 'gang-outs' in 'downtown Carlsbad' or at least pack heat. Home invasions, car thefts, daylight purse snatchings, are under-reported in paradise. Hope the victim recovers and the lowlife hung in a guillotine.

WOW in the wrote on Aug 22, 2008 10:58 AM:I typically go to this gas station every morning on my way to work around the time of this incident. Today was different, Cbad police everywhere, gas station shut down, yellow police tape all over the place.

I used to think that our little village was a very safe place to live though I am seeig a lot of crime in our neighborhood and it is causing an alarm to me and other residents.

This past weekend the gang task force was out in full force which was nice to see. Wonder if it made a differance?

I hope they catch this guy and make an example out him. Best of luck to the victim... prayers for him.

Pushed in Carlsbad wrote on Aug 22, 2008 11:55 AM:Let me see, these guys got pushed from where? and who did the pushing? Do you realize how ridiculous your statement is? It is wishful thinking on your part that crime does not happen as a matter of routine in Carlsbad.

Just when you think you're safe in a community...

Umm.. wrote on Aug 22, 2008 12:09 PM:The headline was amusing. Someone stabbed a gas station? Was it the price of gas?

to Pushed wrote on Aug 22, 2008 12:54 PM:The poster's comments were quite clear. Police efforts in the other cities are pushing the dregs into Carlsbad. Once Carlsbad gets a handle on it, they'll move back to where they came from.

Not in This Town wrote on Aug 22, 2008 1:20 PM:Having lived in Carlsbad for many many years, let's just say this: if an actual report was taken on each and every crime in this town, our statistics wouldn't look that much different than those of neighboring cities. For those of you who believe that, by living in Carlsbad, you are inoculated from crime, I can only say, time to wake up and smell the coffee.

build the fence wrote on Aug 22, 2008 1:26 PM:Between C-bad and Encinitas!!
Just kidding. Hope this guy recovers and the suspect is arrested. Wake up folks, it can happen anywhere. It's a sad fact of life.

Jsten wrote on Aug 22, 2008 1:43 PM:Carlsbad has little or nothing to do with it. Obviously the perpetrator is mobile. Its the I-5 Corridor that provides the conduit for people, good or bad, to move efficiently throughout the area. Maybe carlsbad was targeted because the people are believed to be more affluent.

Ironically, it was Oceanside, where I first saw the movie "Death Wish" long long ago. Maybe people should look at it again when it comes up on TV.

I have on several occasions past a crime scene and do not see it in the paper, also from personal experience, I know it does not get reported.

Don't get me wrong Carlsbad is a great place to live but it is not crime-free.

nameless wrote on Aug 22, 2008 3:17 PM:"The villains are being pushed into Carlsbad."

they say ignorance is bliss, actaully so assume carlsbad violence and crime is a result of other city cracking down would be pretty funny if it was'nt so pathetic

To Cbader wrote on Aug 22, 2008 3:20 PM:Not every 99-cent crime makes the paper. Remember the old journalism saying: If it bleeds, it leads, baby.

FTM to Lloyd wrote on Aug 22, 2008 3:38 PM:Sorry to burst your bubble Lloyd but the FBI crime statistics show more crimes committed per person in Caelsbad than in Oceanside. Also, there are 3 times as many 'persons' in Oceanside so you are going to have twice as many crime stories from Oceanside than Carlsbad. Carlsbad is just 'smaller', not 'safer'.

Top Lloyd wrote on Aug 22, 2008 4:03 PM:"Cbad PD who are a lot better then there surrounding agencies."

Really? Cbad PD wish they half of the experience that OPD and Vista Sheriff have in dealing with this type of incidents.

Get a Clue!

Lloyd wrote on Aug 22, 2008 5:11 PM:Sorry FTM but apparently you are just blurting out assumptions.

Per the FBI website the UCR (uniform crime report) for 2006 (2007 is not complete yet) that Carlsbad has a population of 91,590 and Oceanside has a population of 167,604. Not quite the "3 times as many persons" that you say it is, I guess your wrong on that point.

Carlsbad had 329 violent crimes and 2455 property crimes compared with Oceanside's 1011 violent crime and 6337 property crimes. Hmmmm FTM seems like your math is a little bit off. I doubt you even know what you are talking about. Or maybe you meant to say "3 times the amount of crime..."

Now to Top, over 50% of the cops in Carlsbad are laterals, meaning that they came from somewhere else, Like San Deigo PD, Oceanside, Sheriff departments, LAPD, and elsewhere. Their experience level is extemely high, unlike Vista with their young pup deputies running around. Oceanside.... nope nobody goes to Oceanside or Vista they leave those places to find better work elsewhere. Carlsbad gets to pick the best from the other agencies that don't treat them right.

Carlsbad gain, others lose.

Yeah Tuck I hear you nothing more needs to be said. Oh where are the latino activists defending the upstanding criminals?

Always Armed wrote on Aug 22, 2008 10:21 PM:Pepole get used to these typs of crimes increasing. Words that were written thousands of years ago say " the worst is yet to come". This is VERY true. Lloyd wrote on Aug 22, 2008 11:21 PM:Hmmm Top how about that Cbad PD making a quick arrest, wrapping it all up in one day. So a bank robber gets caught moments after robbing a bank and now a carjacker/robber is also caught shortly thereafter. Seems like Cbad PD is quick on the job. You don't hear the others doing that do you? What was that thtat you said about "experience" dealing with these incidents?

To Lloyd wrote on Aug 23, 2008 1:13 AM:Read!!!, Sheriffs assisted Cbad PD, in other words Sheriffs found the guy and Cbad PD came and picked him up.

Lloyd stop comparing apples to oranges. Vista Sheriffs and OPD talk to real gangbangers, how do Cbad spend their time while on patrol?
giving out tickets to grandmom!

Comparing Cbad, Encinitas, Poway, etc to OPD and Vista Sheriffs is like comparing AA to MLB,

To Lloyd wrote on Aug 23, 2008 2:06 AM:Lloyd. I was near the residence when it was hit. Eight "Vista Sheriff's" patrol vehicles quickly surrounded the residence. Carlsbad came after Chavez was already detained.

You weren't there. Carlsbad is a good agency along with all the other hard working officer's and deputy's in the county. New or veteran you have to start somewhere.

Good job by CPD for gathering suspect info quickly and good job by the SDSO "Vista" for reacting to that info and getting this guy off the streets.

Not all officer's and deputy's are bad. Every job has its bad apples even Law Enforcement.

Our state and country are being overrun with this dangerous invasion which in turn is bankrupting our cities and turning many areas into third world neighborhoods.

FTM to Lloyd wrote on Aug 25, 2008 1:44 PM:Can you be any dumber? Your own figure say there are 2784 crimes in Carlsbad and 7348 crimes in Oceanside.

Using YOUR OWN population figures shows 32 crimes per person in Carlsbad and 22 crimes per person in Oceanside!!

Like I said: The crime stats for Oceanside are lower per person than Carlsbad, and your own figures show it. (By the way, you have the Oceanside population WAY WAY off because you don't count Camp Pendleton).

In any case Oceansides crime rate is much lower than Carlsbad.

Sorry to spoil your party over there.

FTM to Lloyd wrote on Aug 25, 2008 1:51 PM:Lloydd get's this wrong too:

According to Wikipedia:
pop. Oceanside = 173303
pop. Carlsbad = 90271

Lloyd really needs some math lessons too.

FTM to Lloyd wrote on Aug 25, 2008 2:23 PM:FBI crime index shows in 2000 the only S.D. city with a lower crime rate than Carlsbad was Coronado. Since then things have changed. Also, the FBI only pooles crime data for cities OVER 100K pop., so your stats were not even on thier web site.

I WAS able to get the FBI crime index for both cities and both Oceanside and Carlsbad have a FBI Crime Index of 6 overall. Oceanside has a higher VIOLENT crime index if you break out the crimes by TYPE. If you go by TYPE, Oceanside has a Crime Index of 6 and Carlsbad has a Crime Index of 4. That's very good for Carlsbad, but it's the HISTORICAL data that is troubling ALL OF US along the beach cities. Back in 2000 Oceanside had a Crime Index of 7 and Carlsbad had a Crime Index of ONE! (1). That's right! ONE!. Things are only slightly improving in Oceanside but the figures for Carlsbad are extreamly scary and somthing needs to be done with the CPD so they are not so dependent on Sherrifs and others to fight violent crime.

Lloyd wrote on Aug 26, 2008 12:13 AM:Boy FTM you are ..., google FBI UCR, and then go to Schedule 8 and see what you get buddy. The numbers that the FBI uses are there, you are just not smart enough to know where to look. The area for cities over 100,000 are on a different graph. You then contradict yourself and say that you were able to get the FBI crime stats, like what are you some special person and only you can find these?

Oh and BTW your math is off. How could a city with more then double the crime (7348 is a LARGER # then 2784) but not double the population (167k vs 91k)have "less crime". Are you even thinking when you type?

And you can't divide the population by the number of crimes, WHICH IS WHAT YOU DID!!! to get a crimes per person. Are you serious? Then the more crimes that you have the less you end number is. If OSide had 167k crimes and 167k people then your number would be "1". Are you for real? Do you even know what math is?

Let me show you how to do math (again using 2006 #'s a point that escaped you) Oside 167,604 population w/7348 part 1 crimes means they have about 44 crimes per 1000 people. Cbad has 91,590 pop and 2784 part 1 crimes meaning they have about 30 crimes per 1000 people. You divided the wrong number there smart guy.

Lloyd wrote on Aug 26, 2008 12:15 AM:And Mr Wikipedia I said 2006 numbers, do you think maybe the numbers vary from source to source and year to year???? Off by a couple thousand people over 2 years. And that is not math there guy, it is called facts.

Is your village missing one of their special people?
