Skateboard demonstration upcoming
OCEANSIDE ---- The Oceanside Salvation Army and Glory Skateboards will present a skateboard demonstration from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 30 at 3935 Lake Blvd. Bring skateboards and helmets and skate with the pros from Glory Skateboards. Ragtime Piano Concert set
OCEANSIDE ---- Eric Marchese will perform a Ragtime Piano Concert at 8 p.m. Aug. 30 at the Sunshine Brooks Theatre, 217 N. Coast Highway. The benefit concert will feature works of such noted ragtime composers as Scott Joplin, Irving Berlin, George Botsford, Joseph Lamb and Charley Straight. Tickets are $15. History of Oceanside Pier is topic
OCEANSIDE ---- A special free program about the history of the Oceanside Pier will be hosted by the Oceanside Historical Society and Public Library at 10 a.m. Sept. 6 in the Community Rooms at 330 N. Coast Highway.
The event will include photos of the pier, solicited from the community. Attendees can bring their own pier and beach photos, which will be scanned to build a comprehensive collection of the pier's past and present. A video will be shown of the 1956 Miss Southern Californian Beauty Contest held in the Pier amphitheater. The second-place winner was Raquel Tejada, who became famous as actress Raquel Welch.

Surf contest at Oceanside Pier
OCEANSIDE ---- The 12th annual Surf for the Sea will take place Sept. 6 and 7 at the Oceanside Pier, north side. Surf for the Sea is a commemorative event in memory of the late Harry Bennett, Steve Leighton, Tore Bonura, Chuck "Clubber" Hundley, Banning Capps and John Craven, all local surfers who have passed away. The event benefits the Surfrider Foundation San Diego Chapter and other environmental organizations helping to protect the coast, ocean, waves and beaches.
Trophies will be awarded in 14 divisions. Entry fee is $40 for amateur and $80 for the Pro/Am Division. All competitors receive an event T-shirt, lunch catered by Johnny Manana's and a chance at the opportunity raffle, whose prizes include surfboards and wetsuits.

Brother Benno Foundation needs photos
OCEANSIDE ---- The Brother Benno Foundation will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Oct. 25. Part of the foundation's celebration will be a 10- to 12-minute DVD of photos put to music to help tell the story of the foundation's 25 years of service to the less fortunate. The foundation is asking anyone who has pictures taken at the center or the original Brother Benno Kitchen on Minnesota Street from 1983-1991 to lend them to the foundation for the DVD. Vista Elks to hold annual barbecue
VISTA ---- The Vista Elks Lodge will hold its 50th annual Barbecue Gala from 1-5 p.m. Aug. 31 at 1947 E. Vista Way, with food, music, raffle prizes and a craft fair.
Raffle tickets for a 47-inch flat screen HDTV game ready TV are available at the barbecue or in advance at the lodge. Tickets for the raffle are $1 each and winner need not be present to win.

Library to host 'Fourth Tuesday' teen workshops
CARLSBAD ---- The Carlsbad City Library kicks off its series of free workshops designed to teach teens real-world skills (finance, research, how to get into college and job-hunting) with "Become Wealthy" at 7 p.m. Aug. 26 at Carlsbad City Library's Computer Lab, 1775 Dove Lane. Participants will discuss being smart about money and learn how to secure their financial future by making wise decisions. Other workshops:
-- Sept. 23, 7-8 p.m., "Research Tips." Learn how to use electronic databases and the library catalog better, as well as Internet searching tips.
-- Oct. 28, 7-8 p.m., "Get Into the College You Want." The workshop gives a brief introduction to some SAT testing strategies, financial aid and how to apply to get into a college of choice.
-- Nov. 25, 7-8 p.m. "Get a Job." Tips on how to write a resume, craft a cover letter, and how to prepare for a job interview.

Sustainable energy subject of workshop
CARLSBAD ---- A informative workshop on sustainable energy will be presented by the Center for Sustainable Energy and speaker Andrea Cook from 7-8:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at the city of Carlsbad Faraday Center, 1635 Faraday. Cook will discuss climate change, the impacts on water and energy supply, wildfires, public health, greenhouse gas emissions and new environmental laws (AB32), tips to reduce personal carbon footprints and more. Carlsbad Optimists hold golf tourney
OCEANSIDE ---- The Optimist Club of Carlsbad "The Achievers" will host the 12th annual Carl Tillinghast Golf Tournament Sept. 22 at the El Camino Country Club, 3202 Vista Way. Entry fee of $150 incudes green fees with cart, lunch and dinner, golf gift, contest prizes, raffles and beverage tickets.

Public invited to annual art walk
LEUCADIA ---- Leucadia 101 Main Street Association's 2008 LeucadiART Walk will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 31. The free event will feature local art galleries and artists displaying their work along Highway 101. There will also be art demonstrations, entertainment and children's activities. Local artist's work on display at Pannikin

Center to offer 'Gentle Pilates'
ENCINITAS ---- The Encinitas Senior Center will offer its Gentle Pilates class from 9-10 a.m. Mondays at the center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive. Seniors learn to move from the core, strengthen, lengthen and pick up new cues for better posture. Students should bring a mat and pillow to class.
