Cruisin' Grand not what it used to be
What a difference a year makes. I am not sure what has happened to the attendance, both by street rods and visitors, but Cruisin' Grand is not nearly the event it once was. Last year, it was a struggle to find a parking place to exhibit cars. This year, you can actually get parking on Grand.
I understand that there is a new person in charge of Cruisin' Grand; if their idea was to make things better than they were, then they are failing. I am not into the politics that has been and is going on with this event, but things need to change to get participants interested in coming back. Perhaps the downtown businesses want this event to fail so that they can have Friday attendance in their businesses the same as the other six days a week. I am sure the restaurant that my wife and I go to Friday nights actually enjoys us spending our money there.
And as far as the participants go, remember, it's about the cars. Come back and let people enjoy your hobby.

This nation has a great national park system
My wife and I have re-acquainted our kids from Florida and New Jersey with some of our Western parks in recent years. In 1972, we took a five-week, cross-country trip from our Maryland home when our kids were in the elementary and middle school grades. At that time, gasoline cost as much as 38 cents a gallon in a few Western states! That trip made a lasting impression on them.
For the first time, my wife and I recently visited the major parks in the Canadian Rockies. Although the scenery was spectacular, what was missing were the interpretive centers we were used to that acquaint newcomers with a variety of scheduled activities and programs. Information centers at Banff and Jasper manned by volunteers cannot substitute for our own Park Service facilities. Pamphlets and books on geology, botany and wildlife are lacking. Naturalist-led half-day trips conducted by nongovernment personnel are costly, especially for families.
We must do all we can to make sure that Congress doesn't neglect our national parks with inadequate funding. They are a priceless resource that we can't afford to ignore.

Shale oil not a viable option
Shale has been touted as a great oil resource. Sixty percent of the world's shale oil is in the Green River Formation within Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. Three reasons why this source should not be tapped: First, shale contains, on average, 35 gallons of oil per ton. Pound for pound, shale contains one-tenth the energy of oil, one-sixth that of coal.
Second, to produce shale oil, the rock is mined, then trucked to a reprocessing plant where it is crushed, fed into a kiln and roasted to a thousand degrees Fahrenheit. This heat cracks the shale kerogen wax, which can be refined into a liquid fuel. Retorting shale is capital-intensive, inefficient and polluting. This process is so costly and laborious that global production has never exceeded 25,000 barrels per day. Retorting a million barrels per day would entail mining and disposing of 700 million tons of earth per year, digging the world's deepest open-pit mines (1,000 to 2,000 feet).
Third, and most important: The Green River Formation is where the major water source for the Southwest is located. Open-pit mining of this extent would demolish this water source. Once mined, the water tables can never be restored. Decision time?

Republicans won't dupe voters again
Contrary to inferences in some past letters, Obama's answers to questions are well thought out and cover the complicated issues. McCain tends to give the well-rehearsed stump speech ā“ā“ even for interviews. Bush always has a quick answer to questions. Often idiotic, but quick.
McCain, a courageous old military man, has a militant solution to our international problems. Invade Iraq, for instance, stay 100 years. Talk tough to Russia. Our hands are tied, but talk tough anyway.
The financially irresponsible Republicans have duped the voters with their "tax and spend" slogan. Their modus operandi is borrow and spend. Let our grandchildren pay the bills.
The ... biggest deficits in recent times occurred under Reagan and Bush. It's really time for change.

Court forces physicians to 'treat' patients
In response to the article in the North County Times, "Court rules doctors can't refuse services to gays," Aug. 19, regarding the ruling of the California Supreme Court. ... I cannot sit quietly by as Drs. Christine Brody and Douglas Fenton are targeted by the lesbian left.
While I do not personally know these two physicians, I am sure that they are dedicated to causing no harm to any person as a patient. Sounds as if Lupita Benitez was "treated" by these physicians for one year, then became angry when they made the choice not to artificially inseminate her. Sounds as if she has successfully (for the moment) turned the physicians' right not to perform an elective procedure around. You see, there is a very big difference between a medical necessity and a medically elective procedure. An elective procedure does not need to be done to maintain one's health. ...
We are a country of people who whine about having to pay a fine for not renewing our driver's license as well as for "hurt feelings" due to misplaced need for an elective medical procedure. Dr. Brody and Dr. Fenton, please know that the majority of people in the country back you in your use of your medical as well as your moral judgment.

Candidate of the people
Over the years I've written many letters, but never about a political candidate. I am a Republican, but my letter is about a Democratic candidate. This says much for what I see as integrity in this man, as well as my freedom to choose because of the person rather than the party.
I see Grey Frandsen as being a candidate of the people. How long has it been since we could say that? Grey is running against the incumbent, Kevin Jeffries, for California Assembly District 66. How lucky we are to have this choice.
Grey is openly willing to state his opposition to Liberty Quarry. He is adamantly opposed to having this mine in the community where he lives with his family. This has become a top issue in his campaign, as it is in our communities. His background in politics is impressive, both in Washington and in reconstructing policy in countries around the world. He worked on campaign reform with Sen. Russ Feingold. It is his humility and his connection to the issues affecting us every day that influence me; the economy, jobs, the environment. I see his main issues not being political, but nonpartisan. He unites people rather than divides them. Choose wisely.

Mass e-mails are often incorrect
To Irene Edwards (Letters, Aug. 16) and to all those letter writers in the North County Times who seem to get the majority of their information on Barack Obama (or anything else for that matter) from e-mails that flood their inbox, I encourage you to investigate any claims received in this manner on a wonderful Web site, www.snopes.com.
This Web site has well-researched, thorough and unbiased examinations of the claims made in just about any e-mail you might receive. They will even look into anything you receive that they have not yet investigated! Knowledge is power, right?
I encourage anyone who receives any e-mail that makes you feel like you should pass it on to first check it out with Snopes. Or even just Google it! Sometimes I've been surprised to find the e-mail true.
Before you automatically hit that forward button, or write a letter to the editor, please check it out. Do the research. This small effort ensures that you, and the rest of us, are honestly informed. And that way we don't waste time thinking about things that perhaps have already been researched and found to be demonstrably untrue.

Help defenseless animals
I am a volunteer who has been collecting signatures to help place Proposition 2 on the ballot. As you may or may not know, Prop. 2 will allow caged and confined animals more space to at least move around in. It has been proven that these animals have feelings, have memory and suffer and feel pain. The American Egg Board and the USDA have no concern for the feelings of animals and are willing to stand by and watch the needless suffering of chickens and other farm animals.
I am very glad that the Humane Society of the United States is filing suit against this activity, and I hope your paper will take a stand to help defenseless animals and support Prop. 2.

Dems fatten their pockets, pick ours
Michelle Malkin's Aug. 14 column ("Why Pelosi opposes drilling, loves wind") was a gem, and it was the truth about Nancy Pelosi and T. Boone Pickens. It seems they both have large sums of money invested in wind power and natural gas, Pickens billions and Pelosi $200,000. Is it any wonder she is dead set against drilling in ANWR and off our coasts? That would be a loss for her.
I'm a bit puzzled about the Democrats using government positions to fatten their bottom line and keep the country in dire straits. I've got a drained gas tank and empty wallet! Pelosi would lie through her phony smile to further her own interest, and as a Libertarian, I can see through that very plainly. Do you Dems see the lies, or are you blinded by her arrogant smile?
Then there's Proposition 10, to dole out $10 billion for wind farms and gas, another Pelosi deal to fatten her pocket. Wind power is a dud in California. How about it, Dems? Does it pass or do you do the right thing and dump it? I say dump it because it won't save one thin dime. God bless the honest voter.

No apology necessary
You do not owe any Guadalcanal vets an apology for your recently published article that was criticized by a reader in the Aug. 17 paper. First, our troops ships were escorted from Wellington, New Zealand, via the Fijis to Guadalcanal. The two Allied battle cruisers, the HMAS Canberra and HMAS Australia, provided protection for the Marine troopships. They remained on station fighting in numerous battles with the Japanese Navy until the Canberra was sunk the night of Aug. 10, 1942, and its Walrus seaplane was left high and dry on the beach. The First Marine Division was later reinforced by the 164th and 182nd U.S. Army regiments. (Allies? I should say so.)

We are tired of Bush's presidency
I refer to the letter, "She remains an angry woman," dated Aug. 16, by Peggy Sloan, in which she refers to John Schueler's letter dated Aug. 6. "I am no longer the person I was before Bush took office eight years ago."
I feel the same about Bush destroying the Republican Party for this election. First, his administration fooled the Congress and the American people that there was a large number of weapons of mass destruction, later found to be untrue.
Secondly, he tried to destroy the Social Security and Medicare program until AARP and the general public backed him down.
Thirdly, we see that this war has cost us over a trillion dollars, and is still costing America billions each month. And McCain says we will win. ... Recall that all the Republicans running for office kept their distance from Bush's plans, and later decided to change by complaining about Bush ā“ā“ then he became the great leader of the Republican candidates. Remember, Colin Powell resigned, and now McCain and Obama are tied for presidency. Don't believe it. Obama should win. You watch and see.

Commuting in a different way
With the economy faltering and the gas prices rising, everyone would like alternative transportation to help conserve money and reduce traffic congestion. Being a Southern California resident my whole life, I have seen the traffic situation steadily get worse and the price at the pump get almost unaffordable.
To help resolve this problem, there needs to be a light rail system connecting the North County MTS to the San Diego trolley. Also, having stops at industrial parks, malls, etc.
Instead of planning how to put more vehicles on the road with the recent ongoing Interstate 15 construction, there needs to be a way to reduce the amount of cars and have alternative transportation. A well-planned light rail system is the solution to the problems with traffic, and it keeps some more money in the pockets of the San Diego County residents. If everyone helps out, we can make a difference!

Hey Arthur wrote on Aug 25, 2008 3:38 AM:Maybe NCT doesn't owe apologies to any Guadalcanal vets, but I think you do, sir.
I am a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer who served on one of those ships you flippantly refer to as, "Marine troopships", which makes me and my shipmates Guadalcanal vets.
Our ships belonged, not to the Marines (who I have unwavering respect for), but to the Navy. Our ships faced extreme enemy fire to put you ashore so you could do your job, and to refer to any one of them as anything less than a "United States Navy Man-o'-War", or a "Ship of the Line", makes us feel like we were little more than taxi drivers for your colleagues.
Sir, we were far more than that! And, we lost shipmates in action doing our duty to support your mission!

That news was a complete surprise to Hussein and Biden. Yet, 80% of the American peole know it and, along with Bush & McCain have advocated drilling and nuclear plants until other sources are available in sufficeint quantities to meet our needs. Yet Pelosi, Reid, Hussein, Biden and Kennedy wave their middle finger at drilling. They prefer we send $700 billion to the 2-bit oil sheiks, as gas prices and grain commodity inflation choke our economy. In addition, Hussein and Biden want to drastically increase taxes on employers, which shall certainly be passed down to the workers through lower wages and lower benefits. Then, he wants to turn the medical delivery system over to the same bureaucrats who have bankrupted Social Security & Medicare. The only change Hussein & Biden stand for is the change that will be left in your paycheck when you vote for them.

This greatly disturbs me, all this time, I could have sworn you were a man of conscious.
Now, yesterday.. I gave you several great options to help someone right here, today, but you bocked.
gracchus, no one ever said you had to save them all equally at the very same time. You start as any great movement does, one person at a time. And the movement, begins with you.
Like I said, nothing is stopping you from adopting a person, a family today, to help them with their medical needs, their food, their housing. But you gave me an excuse, I am truly, truly disappointed.
If everyday we fail to act, someone dies.. then why do we not act? Even if I can only save one, I'm going to do that, because that is what I'm called to do, according to my faith.
I dedicate my revenue, over and above what the goverment takes for their "charity", and provide income to a few charitable causes I feel are deserving.
The boat I bought, is regularly used by Boy Scouts to earn merit badges.
These are not things I'm telling you to impress you, or make myself look better to anyone. If all I had was the ability to make coffee & sandwiches for the homeless, that's what I would use.
The key difference between me and you is that I will act upon my beliefs, and you will wait for leadership.
In your technocratic mindset, which is very common with most liberals, the thinking goes, If I can't save them all, then it's not fair, it's not just, and it's not right. So, you'll hold back, and not act, when misery surrounds you. You'll go out and light candles to "bring awareness", and not actually get in, do the hard work, person to person, and help with what you got. Even if all you can afford is a can of corn, buy it, and give it away.
Further, I think many liberals think of the government as their "church." However, in this church, they wait for those with "more" to be taxed, thus escaping their own personal commitment.
When Jesus said: feed the hungry. He did not mean wait for the government to tax the Rich, so that a program will be made to feed them. He meant for you to do it, with whatever you have, and when the government misses certain people, and you see that need, you are required to do it, on his behalf.
This is a very key difference between you and me. I choose to act individually, you will wait for some big collectivist cause, with the Rich pulling the cart. That's your form of charity.

If there is one thing we do not need it is more physical infrastructure. Aside from social and span of control aspects, most work can be done collaboratively from home with telecommuting.
I ran a Los Angeles TV station entirely from my Poway home in the early 80s by computer, finally spending one day a week at the office only because when I did visit, no one knew me!
Many jobs do not require face to face work. My clients today do not know if I am on the mainland, or on the north coast of Kauai -- and they don't care. They hire my mind, the results of which are electronically transportable to anywhere, anytime.
We need to reorganize our society to work independently, electronically, instead of building more terribly expensive freeways and even more expensive light rail.
We spend far too much time and money transporting bodies instead of minds. Obviously it won't work for everyone, or for every project, but it will work for sufficiently large group that there is no need for more costly and time consuming physical infrastructure.

But Snopes is not the end all and be all, particularly when the subject is as complicated as the age of China's women gymnasts or Obama's complicated early history.
Both of those are now challenged in appropriate courts, not courts of public opinion. In the case of Obama, the challenge is by a long-time Democratic Party activist lawyer, and the decision will be rendered not by Snopes but by a court.
The story is not Obama's past so much as it is the citizenship challenge by a Hillary supporter, who says he is doing it to keep the Republicans from sabotaging the election after Obama is selected this next week, by revealing what he has revealed now.
Is this a Clintonian move to stop Obama? I have no clue. Is this a crazy Democrat lawyer? I have no clue. Is Obama's early history suspect as to citizenship? I have no clue. Are some of the Chinese female gynmasts 14? I have no clue.

DD Wiz wrote on Aug 25, 2008 8:42 AM:The published letter from Ryan Strausbaugh is excellent and correct, as far as it goes, in recommending increased electric-powered light rail as an alternative to just putting more cars on the road (and making sure they actually go to places people want to go to), but he misses additional important aspects of this solution.
1. Light rail can't cover every place in the County. Many times North County people are involved in personal or business activities in other parts of the County that go places where light rail is not feasible. Why not have some transit that allows carrying autos so that we could get our cars off the roads going into San Diego, but have them when we get there to enable driving the rest of the way to out-of-the-way destinations?
2. Provide tax and other incentives to business that promote telecommuting. Today, with high-speed Internet available and easy access to teleconferencing on almost every computer, including laptops, it simply is not necessary for many workers to drive into offices each day. By definition, everyone in this forum can understand this (unless, like McCain) they had to have their staffers log on for them.
Peace (and sunshine) to all, DD Wiz
Ron wrote on Aug 25, 2008 8:59 AM:Now, see.. this disturbs me when I read something like this from George Buzzelli; "Shale oil {is} not a viable option."
The United States established the Office of Naval Petroleum and Oil Shale Reserves in 1913 under Progressive Woodrow Wilson, no less.
{which will tell you how far down the slide this current crop of progressives as fallen}
During World War II, concern for conserving and increasing the nationās oil resources prompted passage of the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944 under FDR.
Oil shale has a fairly episodic history in America, all based on the cheap price of conventional oil. Stewart Udall, founder within the Democratic Party of the environmental movement, was pro-shale. As Secretary of the Interior, he mobilized in the 1960s to move shale forward, to lease it, to make it commercial, but this effort failed again, the very low price of conventional petroleum ruled out shale,
the economics were not favorable.
The OPEC embargo in the 70's, cause conventional petroleum price escalation, shale once again attracted attention. American oil companies applied for leases and paid $41,000 per acre in Colorado.
In the 1970s, The Air Force looked at shale, tested it, and found that it was a superior liquid for jet fuel. Roughly 65 percent of the oil shale is liquid, which could go into jet fuel. The J-8 engine can take shale oil as premium jet fuel.
The Air Force last year, began testing a synthetic fuel blend for the B-52, and next in line is the C-17, a crucial step to the private sector, since the C-17 shares engines in common with some commercial aircraft.
You might be able to run your car on a battery for 30-50 miles by the end of 2012. But you cxan fly an airplane on em. They need jet fuel, shale is but one method.

These young men have put their hides in harms way so you can do this to them. Another example of how liberals love their country. The anti war groups pushed for this and got it.
This is flat out appeasement to liberals.

If we the people decide to feed the poor via government and taxation, it's our business. (I'm pretty sure Jesus said nothing about being the world's policeman, for example. And since Jesus made it so very, utterly clear that this teaching (to individuals) is how they can be saved (without even mentioning faith), he will join those who honor Jesus by rejecting the heretical teachings of Paul who repeatedly taught exactly the opposite, i.e., that salvation is based on belief without regard for your actions (Romans 3:28; 4:6; Galatians 2:16; Ephesians 2:8-9; II Timothy 1:9; Titus 3:5).

James Madison, the primary author of the US Constitution lived long enough to pen: "I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents." He wrote that concerning, as my memory recalls, a mere $15,000 that Congress was considering to pay to some community of unfortunates in need of charity.
Charity was never authorized by the Constitution -- and neither was authorized a Department of Education, or an Air Force or a number of other things, They are all extra-Constitutional constructs and done illegally without amending the Constitution.

And according to my sources {yes, there are many..}
it wasn't aimed at preventing abuse or protecting consumers, and everyone knew it.
According to them, this legislation was so hostile to ordinary American families that it could only have come about in a place as corrupt, cynical and unmoored from reality as Washington, D.C. The bankruptcy bill is morally bankrupt. And so is any senator who votes for it.
"So what does the bill do? It makes it harder for average people to file for bankruptcy protection; it makes it easier for landlords to evict a bankrupt tenant; it endangers child-support payments by giving a wider array of creditors a shot at post-bankruptcy income; it allows millionaires to shield an unlimited amount of equity in homes and asset-protection trusts; it makes it more difficult for small businesses to reorganize while opening new loopholes for the Enrons of the world; it allows creditors to provide misleading information; and it does nothing to rein in lending abuses...."
My compliments to the Huff post!
And Biden voted for it.

Clearly, charities for religious purposes are clearly constitutionally forbidden, but if the government determines that proactive efforts to prevent problems, such as education, job training, family support services, etc., are preferable to reactive solutions to problems (cleaning up messes after they occur), as long as it is a public policy endeavor rather than an effort at being a "do-gooder" to win "salvation," this is for the public to decide through their representatives.
The most successful public policy efforts understand that "stitch in time" approach to preventing rather than solving problems.
