Nominees due for veterans' award
TEMECULA ---- Nominees are being sought for the third annual Outstanding Community Service Award, which recognizes local military veterans who continue to serve their community.
Any veteran residing in Temecula or Murrieta is eligible for consideration. Five winners will be announced at the Tribute to Veterans event Nov. 15 at the Community Recreation Center.
"We are looking for members of the community who are veterans who are also involved in local community service," said Perry Peters, a member of the organization's advisory board. "They are serving their community as well as their country."
The deadline for nominations is Tuesday.
Applications must include the name of the individual, his or her branch of service, highest rank held, dates of service, last duty station served, as well as contact information of the person making the nomination.
Each entry should be no more than three pages, double spaced, and specify why the nominee should receive the award.
Those who nominate winning entries will receive a Good Samaritan Award.

Elks host bingo games
LAKE ELSINORE ---- The Lake Elsinore Elks Lodge hosts weekly Thursday night bingo games at Trevi Entertainment Center. Doors open at 4 p.m. and warm-ups are at 6.
Proceeds benefit the Elks charitable activities.

Marine Corps League to gather
WILDOMAR ---- The monthly meeting of the Marine Corps League, Southwest Riverside County Detachment No. 1057, will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Lake Elsinore VFW post.
The group meets the last Saturday of each month. All active and former Marines and Navy corpsman with honorable service are invited.

Model railroad club to meet
SUN CITY ---- Model railroad enthusiasts are invited to meet with the newly formed Sun City Model Railroad Club at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the West Room in the Del Webb Hall.
Organizers will discuss the needs of the club, set goals designed to help model railroaders with their layout, share what takes place at the model railroad train shows and share where model railroaders can purchase supplies.

Oak Grove volunteers to meet
MURRIETA ---- A volunteer group, Angels for Oak Grove, meets monthly to benefit Oak Grove, a residential treatment facility and school that serves children with a variety of social, emotional, medical and neurological impairments.
The Sept. 3 meeting will be at Carrow's restaurant, 24640 Madison Ave.

Campaign economics topic for GOP group
MURRIETA ---- Energy and health care, hot button economic issues in the upcoming election, will be discussed when the Murrieta-Temecula Republican Assembly Club meets at 6 p.m. Sept. 5 at Pat & Oscar's.
Speakers will be Logan Darrow Clements, a businessman and political activist, and Daryl Temkin, founder and director of The Israel Institute, which promotes Israel and its efforts to further alternative energy for a global oil-free economy.
Check-in is at 6 p.m. and dinner is at 6:30. The cost is $15 for members, $20 for others and $10 for students for dinner and the program.

Computer Users to meet Sept. 6
TEMECULA ---- The Temecula Valley Computer Users Group will meet at 10:15 a.m. Saturday at the Temecula Public Library.
Longtime member Simonne Gallagher will demonstrate creating mailing labels using the Mail Merge feature of Microsoft Word 2003. The creation of the address list in Excel also will be demonstrated.
The general meeting will be preceded by a session about Quicken SIG from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Rancho Water District. Member Mike Loring will help users create Quicken accounts for checking, savings, credit card and loans.

Deaf coffee night scheduled
WILDOMAR ---- A coffee night for hearing-impaired people, which is usually held the first Monday of the month at Olivera's coffee shop, will be held Sept. 8 due to the Labor Day holiday.
The social event is from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at 36068 Hidden Springs Road, Suite A.
The gathering also provides an opportunity for American sign language students to practice.

Singer to address group
CANYON LAKE ---- Christian recording artist Marcia Gehris will perform and speak when the Canyon Lake Women's Connection meets from noon to 2 p.m. Sept. 10 at Canyon Lake Lodge.
Gehris will talk about "What it really means to be a star."
The cost is $15 and reservations are due by Sept. 4.

Think Tank expanding
TEMECULA ---- The Think Tank group that meets twice weekly for brainstorming and problem solving is expanding its offerings.
The group meets at 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Carl's Jr. on Ynez and Winchester roads to discuss just about any subject except politics and religion.
The group also offers a manual arts foundation to train teenagers and is now looking for volunteers for a visiting angels program to visit veterans in convalescent facilities.

Senior fitness program featured
TEMECULA ---- Senior citizens can attend an open house showcasing Healthways SilverSneakers Fitness Program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Fitness 19.
Instructors will give demonstrations of the SilverSneakers muscular strength and range of movement.
The program, designed for Medicare-eligible individuals, offers physical activity, health education and social events.

Hot Summer Nights conclude Friday

Youth club plans basketball tourney
TEMECULA ---- The Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest County is registering children for its Inter-Club Middle School Basketball Tournament.
Each of the eight clubhouses in Temecula, Murrieta and Lake Elsinore will have a coed team. Games will be played every Friday from Sept. 5 to Oct. 3.
The fee for is $30 for club members. Non-members will pay an additional $20. Participants will receive a uniform and award. The deadline for registration is Friday.

Breakfast to benefit Jacob's House
MURRIETA ---- A pancake breakfast to benefit Jacob's House will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. Saturday at Giovanni's Restaurant.
Jacob's House is a residence planned to be built near the proposed hospital in the southern part of Temecula where family members of ill children can sleep, eat and find support from others.
The cost will be $5 per person.

Martial arts classes offered
LAKE ELSINORE ---- Tae kwon do classes for ages 4 to adult are offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Lake Community Center. New sessions begin the first week of each month.
The Olympic-style classes, from 4:45 to 6:45 p.m. Mondays and 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays, are taught by Master Tom Vo, a fifth-degree black belt.
The fee is $20 for one day a week, $35 for two days and $45 for all three.
