ESCONDIDO: Checkpoint set for Friday

By North County Times | Wednesday, August 27, 2008 10:28 PM PDT

ESCONDIDO ---- Police cited 23 drivers and impounded 16 vehicles Wednesday in the first of two checkpoints scheduled this week, an Escondido police lieutenant said.

Wednesday's enforcement was held at the intersection of Ninth Avenue and Tulip Street between noon and 2:30 p.m., Lt. James Stuard said. Of 948 vehicles that passed through, 796 were stopped and 36 were sent for a secondary inspection after drivers were unable to provide proof of a license.

Most of the 23 citations issued went to drivers with no license or a suspended licence, Stuard said.

The city's next DUI and driver's license checkpoint is scheduled to run from 6 p.m. Friday to 12:30 a.m. Saturday. The location has not been disclosed.

Greg in Oceanside wrote on Aug 27, 2008 11:43 PM:This is always welcome news. Glad to see people were issued citations for not having a license and that cars are now in the impound lot for at least 30 days. Serves them right.

I'm just wondering why the numbers don't match. If 23 didn't have licenses, why were only 16 cars impounded? Were people cited for not having insurance?

And, were any illegal aliens apprehended? I'd hope so, considering the hordes of illegal aliens who have made Escondido their home.

Come on NCT, give us some details!

Let's hope Friday's checkpoint is a success too.

esteban wrote on Aug 28, 2008 6:42 AM:Anticops? What do you think?

To Greg in OS wrote on Aug 28, 2008 6:58 AM:I believe the discrepancy in the numbers stem from having an alternate driver available in the vehicle. If there's another person in the car that does have a valid license then that person can drive the car away. Why wasn't the licensed person driving to begin with is anyone's guess. Perhaps driving illegally is more fun!

Citizens of Chamber wrote on Aug 28, 2008 7:05 AM:We at the Citizens of Chamber support the checkpoints and encourage people to vote for the candidates in the city council race who also support the checkpoints: Sam Abed and Ed Gallo.

Call the Cheif wrote on Aug 28, 2008 7:06 AM:remind him his first duty is to protect American Citizens, demand he brings in ICE as you don't feel safe and your life is in danger. If he ignores the request......

And be sure to stop all wrote on Aug 28, 2008 7:10 AM:girl scouts ridning skates without proper permits. I think everyone in Escondido we agree we have a problemn with Girl Scouts riding skates. If we the citizens know we have a problem with unlicensed, uninsured Illegal Aliens driving, who do you advise the police to check? Girl Scouts? It is like if I have a mosquito problem I am not going to be spraying for ants. GROW UP!

to Resident wrote on Aug 28, 2008 7:10 AM:Do you drive without a license or insurance?

Council of Members wrote on Aug 28, 2008 8:02 AM:We the Council of Members believe that if we impound every car in Escondido we have a slight chance of reducing the budget deficit we created by 10% !!! VOTE US OUT IN NOVEMBER!

Man Club wrote on Aug 28, 2008 8:08 AM:I'm going to let my 13 year old start driving himself to school. he doens't have a license or insurance, but no one else does either. What's the difference?

re Man Club wrote on Aug 28, 2008 9:13 AM:If you saw the letter from the Chief of Police to NCT the other day. There is a major reduction in hit and runs. So there is a difference.

Scorekeeper wrote on Aug 28, 2008 11:20 AM:A question in general about this story.
Why is it that the results of check points conducted in Escondido get published in the NCT and the ones in Vista hardly ever go to print?

Paul wrote on Aug 28, 2008 2:02 PM:We Need Abed & Gallo.

We need them, just like we need a enormous gaping hole in our heads!!!

The Incompetents MUST GO!!!

Oh so wrote on Aug 28, 2008 2:09 PM:Oh soooo smart Greg in Oceanslime. He can't figure it out why the numbers don't match.

Well, maybe he should move to Washington DC and tell the big guys how to solve the illegal immigration problem and the unlicensed/uninsured drivers problems. Oh soooo smart Greg in Oceanslime spends his days and nights and nights and days lecturing us all about right and wrong and about how cities and people and police and schools and fire dept. and hospitals should do things. WELL, G in O-slime...I'm suggesting that you immediately MOVE to Washington DC and start putting your efforts to better use. Seriously, you should move!! Haven't you heard: In just a couple of decades, caucasians will be the MINORITY!!! Run for your life now, it will be too hard for you to fake it - everyone will recognize your holier-than-thou personality a mile a way - I doubt you will be invited to many bbq's - you will probably feel really out of place with all those people of different colors.

Solution Guy wrote on Aug 28, 2008 2:59 PM:I will gladly sit through a checkpoint and thank EPD for making us safer.

To Solution Guy wrote on Aug 28, 2008 3:52 PM:Good you sit through them. But, don't cry if they break out the rubber gloves. Take it like a man, Mr. Solution Guy!

p.s. glad you are not in charge...so far, your "solutions" are not the making of a genius - just bullies punishing all because of the few. That's no solution!

Citizens of Chamber wrote on Aug 28, 2008 4:23 PM:We at the Citizens of Chamber would like to get in line for the rubber glove treatment if it means a safer community.

Move Back wrote on Aug 28, 2008 10:52 PM:Move Back to the east coast and take your prejudices and bondo with you. While you are at it...take your buds Marie, Steve, Ed, Issam and Dick with you!!! Then you extremists can set up town and have at it...checkpoints galore...you should move to Hazelton - you'd fit right in.

Mark wrote on Aug 29, 2008 1:31 AM:Thank you EPD for taking my Bill of Rights and using it as toilet paper!!

Personal Attacks wrote on Aug 29, 2008 8:42 AM:I was just innocently passing by and started reading the comments. So much hatred to and from strangers over a simple problem that really affects only a few. Tying freedom to any action on the road is plain ignorance. Attacking anyone who has a personal opinion is ignorant and plain stupid. Is this what you want people to think of you?

To Craig wrote on Aug 29, 2008 1:19 PM:Sure his name is "Greg". Oh Sure.

Have you ever read any of (quote) "Greg in Oceanside"s comments? Do you want to talk about INSULTING?

Let's see Greg's comments usually consist of rants about illegal "aliens" (like they are less than human). Need an example, just read his comment above. He writes about: "And, were any illegal aliens apprehended? I'd hope so, considering the hordes of illegal aliens who have made Escondido their home".

Is that not ridiculous or what? "Hordes of illegal aliens". I think Greg's comments can be pretty much classified as MELODRAMTIC.

So, if G in O believes there are 'hordes'...then he should stop spending so much time ragging about it online and get to doing something MORE PRODUCTIVE.

Actually, the truth is: I think "Greg" is a cop in Escondido. I think he sees the ugly side of Escondido because he is a cop. He doesn't see our town in any other light than having to deal with criminals and criminal activity. That's what cops do. Since G in O, supposedly lives in O'side, he does not see the good things in Escondido and he just rags, rags, rags about MY city. I'm personally sick of it...and think he should concentrate on his damn city!! We don't need any more negativety by people that DON'T EVEN LIVE HERE!!! He just adds to the hate and the animosity with his endless endless rants about illegals. And he does it on pratically every story related to Escondido. He appears to be quite OBSESSED!!

So, Craig...anonymously I post - you bet - you know why? Because it actually lets me counter ridiculous comments made by some people (like G in O) with just as much bluntness as allowed!!! And I will continue to counter the likes and mindset of those like G in O.

p.s. Don't forget: Greg constantly insults Escondido.
