TEMECULA: Temecula police hold checkpoint Saturday
By The Californian | ∞
TEMECULA ---- Police plan to conduct a sobriety checkpoint at an undisclosed location in Temecula on Saturday night, officials announced.
The checkpoint will run from 9 p.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday, police said.
Along with targeting those driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, officers will also be checking the license status of motorists passing through the checkpoint, said Temecula police Sgt. Ken Southern.
Funding for the checkpoint is provided through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.

Wow wrote on Aug 29, 2008 6:57 AM:Samiam and Why Not are too closed minded to appreciate the efforts by TPD! Thanks to the RSO / TPD for their checkpoint efforts!!! We need more of them! In the future, I hope to see more checkpoints in Lake Elsinore, Temecula, Hemet and Menifee... We need USBP and RSO to continue their efforts! Thanks to all the officers for their efforts. And, if you are someone who hates police presence, maybe you have something to hid, maybe you should move elsewhere!!!!

If drinking and driving is illegal wrote on Aug 29, 2008 7:24 AM:then why do drinking establishments have parking lots?
Hmm wrote on Aug 29, 2008 7:53 AM:I agree it's another fishing day but there will be no fish to fry in Temecula. Why? TPD will set up the checkpoint so far away from any bar that it's worthless to even be there. Last checkpoint was where? Rancho California near Chardonnay Hills. How about on Margarita or Ynez near the mall?
Mark wrote on Aug 29, 2008 8:03 AM:They always set one up on Margarita just before you enter Murrieta. That's how they get everyone coming back from drinking in Temecula.
How about wrote on Aug 29, 2008 8:12 AM:setting up the checkpoints outside of Kilnary's, The Stampede, any of the wineries or the casino?
Oh leave the poor wrote on Aug 29, 2008 8:20 AM:drunks alone. Isn't their life miserable enough? I mean come on, isn't that why they are drinking because they are suffering and the only way to cope with their afflications, they think, is to drink. What is so "HAPPY" about happy hour?
To Hmm wrote on Aug 29, 2008 8:33 AM:The last checkpoint was not at Rancho Cal, but at Winchester and Nicolas and it had 4 DUI arrests, (among others). To How about- The wineries are out in the county area and not in the city limits, that's why we set up near Rancho Cal. And to Why not- the department does have grant operations to work the gang/drug crimes in the city, you just don't hear about it because we aren't required to put out a press release waring people. This stuff isn't hard to figure out before you open your foolish mouth...
Show Us Ze Papers wrote on Aug 29, 2008 8:38 AM:Just another revenue producing exercise by the TPD. This is not about keeping the streets safe. All they have to do is drive around Pechanga or Hwy 15 and see reckless or drunk drivers. It's just another chance to hassle the law abiding citizens of this town and take away our rights. They don't call Temecula Copland for nothin'.

Geez wrote on Aug 29, 2008 8:48 AM:Why is everyone whining about where it might be at when they haven't even said where it is. If you are so concerned, why do you stake outside of those places and when you see a drunk driver call 911 like the signs on the freeway tell us to do. Stop complaining and take action.
What wrote on Aug 29, 2008 9:14 AM:How is arresting DUI's revenue generating?
And FWIW they have had cops sitting outside Kilarys at the end of the night.

Heres an idea... wrote on Aug 29, 2008 11:36 AM:Why not set up around many of the established restaurants over by the mall. Then you would really rake in some revenue. Besides, it is the same ole cops on here defending what they do because they are worried to death what the general public thinks of them. And then when you don't like it you make sure you blast away with full force. If you don't like what is said then quit reading it!!!
TickTock wrote on Aug 29, 2008 12:10 PM:This does nothing to stop drunk drivers, checkpoints ae meaningless. What a waste of time and money! If you want to stop DUI drivers, stand outside a bars!
To Esteban... wrote on Aug 29, 2008 12:28 PM:You say anticops? I'll take that as a compliment. You say pro-crooks? Wrong again. But thank you for the anti-cop. It made my day.
Murrieta Mom wrote on Aug 29, 2008 2:10 PM:How much does one of these things cost?Could these funds be used for a more positive public purpose say like Family Planning Clinics?
Sandy wrote on Aug 29, 2008 2:19 PM:You know, if I did the crime, I'll do the time but these checkpoints that stop people who are minding their own business and make them show their drivers license, insurance and registration sounds like harassment to me, no probable cause. Now if you assume everyone has their paperwork in order, obeying the law and not driving under the influence, why do you need to check? Why not wait for a violation to occur and then do your job.
The way I see it wrote on Aug 29, 2008 5:36 PM:Driving on the road is not a right, it's a privledge. Yeah it's a pain if you're stuck in the line waiting.
You can't assume that everyone's papers are in order. And if they are not, well T.S. they're supposed to be and you should get dinged for it.
I'm astounded that people have issues over this. Statistics state 1/3 of accidents are related to alcohol. Doesn't that say anything here?
To If drinking and driving is illegal wrote on Aug 30, 2008 12:44 AM:Drinking and driving is not illegal. Drinking and driving while intoxicated is. Hope this helps!

Yup it does, the people complaining are the drunks!
Too hmmm wrote on Aug 30, 2008 8:08 AM:Rancho California road and Chardonnay Hills? I never saw it. But I can give you an idea of why they set it up there.....gee the winneries? Just a clue. As to all the cop bashers out there stop drinking and driving and you won't have anything to worry about!!! Also get a life. To Sandy... sorry to inconvience you with making sure that you are safe. This is NOT harrassment and it almost like babysitting a bunch of roudy kids. People refuse to NOT drink and drive....are you one of them?

Your funded police state is going to have the rug pulled out from underneath it, By the people. Silly,Scared,Controlling,Little Guys, News flash, The wall street journal is owned by a foreign propagandist. Put your trust in that, better yet bury your head in the sand, again!
To Murrieta Mom wrote on Aug 30, 2008 9:48 AM:When the Constitution was written, there were no cars. That's why driving is still a privilege in your FREE society. The Supreme Court still upholds that checkpoints are lawful. I love how you all think that you know what is or is not lawful, but just disregard what the courts say. Take your head out of the sand and make a difference.
EverWonder wrote on Aug 30, 2008 10:45 AM:Ever wonder why the deputies of Temecula are on here all the time? It is because they are trying to do rumor control so that the real frustrations of the citizens who pay for these contract cops does not get out to the masses. The RSO needs Temecula since it is one of their most lucrative contracts. Not to mention their lack of professionalism really comes out in these comment sections. For the check points i really dont care since i obey the law. But i do lose respect for our city leaders and our so called police department when i read some of these comments.

What if your innocent Dad was charged with DV or violating a restraining order that was never isseed. What if your innocent child support paying homeless Dad was beaten up by the (TPD) RCSD. What if you yourself received some asphalt theraphy by the Temecula PD (RCSD). What if your house was broken into and your family threatened by the TPD (Riverside County Sherriffs Department) and they then said opps its the wrong house.

For all you freedom haters. wrote on Aug 30, 2008 4:34 PM:You might change your mind if you or your loved one felt the Jack Boots of the Temecula PD which is really the Riverside County Sheriffs Department and the Riverside County DA's office. Maybe if you had your face pushed into a wire fence by the TPD. You would be singing a differn't toon. Temecula needs to 86 the RCSO and hire their own PD accountable to the people just like our neighbors to the north.
As an wrote on Aug 30, 2008 6:26 PM:outside agency cop, I'm saying I can really care less what the general public thinks of me. The checkpoints are still lawful, and you still don't have a clue what it's like to work law enforcement.
Too Funny wrote on Aug 31, 2008 1:49 AM:Murrieta is going broke paying for their own PD with all the equipment, insurance, retirement, liability, etc. Why do you think their PD was in a broken down trailer for 17 years? They have 20 fewer officers than Temecula and pay nearly twice as much. AND they are trained by RCSO. Temecula gets everything under one contract for one price. So much smarter. The checkpoints fall under Temecula's contract.
ToFunny wrote on Aug 31, 2008 8:27 PM:So how does Murreita PD get thrown into this????
