OCEANSIDE: DUI checkpoint set for Saturday
By North County Times | ∞
OCEANSIDE ---- Police will conduct a DUI checkpoint at an undisclosed location Saturday night, an Oceanside police spokesman said.
The checkpoint will take place between 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 a.m. Sunday, Sgt. Kelan Poorman said.
He said the purpose of the checkpoint is to enforce drinking and driving laws and to make people think twice before drinking and driving.
Poorman also encouraged people to call 911 anytime they see an impaired driver.

I hope this includes illegal aliens too.
Colt wrote on Aug 28, 2008 10:35 PM:Time to do what they do in Reno, and that is picket these things! Now before you jump all over me with some sob story about your cousins friend who got hit by a drunk, let's stop and look at what this is....it is a check point. An excuse to violate our privacy. Stop it.
Grants for gang sweeps wrote on Aug 28, 2008 11:19 PM:Checkpoints are easy overtime... do a sweep of gang neighborhoods and patrol them till 3 in the morning.... we are getting sick of the "easy" way out.... earn that overtime.....
To Colt wrote on Aug 28, 2008 11:37 PM:stay off the roads this weekend, i'll be driving drunk, oh and tell the rest of your family too, that way they will be less of a target for me when i crash and kill someone.
To Colt wrote on Aug 29, 2008 4:16 AM:I'd rather have my privacy violated than my life violated by a drunk driver. There is absolutly no reason to drink and drive.
Greg in Oceanside wrote on Aug 29, 2008 6:22 AM:Colt doesn't seem to realize, there are lots of people out there who aren't playing by the same rules as the rest of us. Based on the numbers of people law enforcement cite each time they conduct these checkpoints, it's pretty disturbing there are that many people driving around without a license, on a suspended license, without insurance, or intoxicated.
Sure, there are people like Colt who claim this is an invasion of privacy, or undue search and seizure. But for those of us who follow the rules, pay fees, have insurance, obey laws, have common decency and do the right thing, we don’t relish in the idea of sitting in a checkpoint, we do so knowing it benefits all of us in the long run.
to greg in oceanside wrote on Aug 29, 2008 6:57 AM:why do you have to mention illegal aliens? it should just be pointed out in general who should be cited or ticketed not just them. it is going to include many people so stop pointing the status out!
good wrote on Aug 29, 2008 8:00 AM:ok vista, what are you waiting for?
...also to Colt wrote on Aug 29, 2008 8:18 AM:Im dumbfounded. How exactly is a DUI checkpoint violating YOUR privacy? Your out in public driving on a public road! If you dont want to your privacy violated stay home! Keep up the good work OPD keep the roads safe.
Greg in Oceanside wrote on Aug 29, 2008 8:57 AM:To those obviously concerned to my inclusion of illegal aliens, I mention them for obvious reasons; they drive without licenses or insurance, and are the ones most likely to leave the scene of an accident (aka hit-and-run). And illegal aliens are using our public roadways without paying taxes to rightfully use them.
How often have we read about immigrants involved in alcohol-related incidents and fatalities, especially out in our rural areas?
Long Run...No Not Really wrote on Aug 29, 2008 9:55 AM:Funny that Greg thinks long term is like next week or next month. That just reflects how society has become so short sighted, insisting on instant news, solutions to problems, food, etc. Long term, we're desensitizing our citizens to a government that can us CHECKPOINTS. Check history, and you'll see that long term this is just a step toward a totalitarianism. Check history, and you'll see that there are ALWAYS those that don't play by the rules. What makes, and hopefully continues to make, our country different is that we sacrifice a bit of safety, and sometimes even lives, to pursue the idea that FREEDOM is worth the cost. Just like Colt said, go ahead and come with all the reasons why you think this is OK. All your showing is your ignorance of the bigger picture, the true long term vision, not the myopic one Greg puts forth. Like my momma always said, two wrongs don't make a right.
To Greg wrote on Aug 29, 2008 10:12 AM:I'm sure you meant ILLEGAL immigrants, right? Or maybe your true colors are shining through.
Everyone that drives pays for gas, so pays gas taxes, so pays for the roads. Even ILLEGAL immigrants pay taxes. Sales tax, gas tax, and most even income tax (granted using EINs or false SSNs, but they still pay). The idea that most ILLEGAL immigrants are living in the bushes working for cash is just not accurate.
toGreg in oceanside wrote on Aug 29, 2008 12:06 PM:Right with ya, nail the drunks, the unlicensed, and the illegal's.
I want them all out of the way.

TO GREG wrote on Aug 29, 2008 2:11 PM:Immigration issues are the FEDS jobs. If they are driving w/o a D.L,issurance, or drunk, I dont care what race they are they need to get busted. Let OPD do thier job with the checkpoint!
To bad.. wrote on Aug 29, 2008 2:38 PM:They have to set up checkpoints the lazy man's way!!!
To TO GREG wrote on Aug 29, 2008 3:16 PM:Agree, except let OPD do their job the old fashioned way, WITHOUT the checkpoints.
nameless wrote on Aug 29, 2008 5:48 PM:why without the check points....
seems to me it's a lot easier letting the poor drunk and uninsured idiots just come to the OPD instead of out trying to chase them around
southside wrote on Aug 29, 2008 6:38 PM:Fact is that they will take place, "IF" they have issues with being on the road, drunk, insurance, etc- take their cars and get them off the ROAD! Doesn't matter WHO they are,, I agree with "to Greg comment". nail them, NAIL THEM! get them off the street. Driving is a privilege, maybe some have forgotten?
Hey Greg wrote on Aug 29, 2008 7:05 PM:Road taxes come from gas taxes, how do illegals get out of that? Please enlighten us
to hey greg wrote on Aug 30, 2008 2:45 AM:Road taxes actually come from fees attached to your registration renewal and drivers license renewal...if u dont believe me, call caltrans and ask where their funding comes from. Illegal aliens may or may not pay registration fees, but they certainly dont pay for the driver's license renewal!
Amazing wrote on Aug 30, 2008 6:50 AM:It is amazing how we blindly agree to check the Constitution at the door everytime we want to do something in the name of terrorism, public safety or another gimmick. The Constitution was designed specifically against unwarranted search and seizure. Of course diving is a privliledge and not a right but, the act of driving can't possibly justify detainment - no matter how brief in a check point. What's next, door to door searches, and the rounding up of citizens until they are proved to be perfectly law abiding or legitimately domiciled? You may say this is extreme - but it has happened before - ever heard of Hitler? So much for the free movement of citizens,
Scooter wrote on Aug 30, 2008 7:39 AM:I'll stand with you, Greg (I'm your Huckleberry!). Use the checkpoints to get drunks, illegals, wife beaters, gang bangers, whatever off the streets and out of our our cities. Show 'em all we mean business. If you don't have anything to hide or worry about, these check points are a piece of cake!
Keep up the check points and the good work, OPD!!!
Good Idea wrote on Aug 30, 2008 10:13 AM:I think we should use these to capture and dispose of anyone draining the public treasury so that there is more for the rest of us. Let's get rid of all minorities, social security and welfare recipients, the disabled, anyone not naturally born here, anyone on medicine, anyone over producing and increasing the population...WOW, the potential here is endless. I simply think it is a good idea.
Grants Get Your Facts Straight wrote on Aug 30, 2008 4:36 PM:Why don't you get your facts straight before commenting! Are you aware of the fact that the majority of the officers who work these checkpoints DO NOT get overtime? They are required to "flex" their hours.

Yes it is wrote on Sep 1, 2008 11:03 AM:Yes, it is a GOOD IDEA, even it it means disposing of minorities, social security and welfare recipients, the disabled, anyone not naturally born here, anyone on medicine, anyone over producing, or not producing, and ANYBODY THAT DRIVES under the effect of alcohol. These people don't belong in the streets or highways, regardless of their motivation to poison their bodies with alcohol.
