(Photo by Bill Wechter - Staff Photographer) CARLSBAD ---- Under foil flags and red, white and blue garland, about 100 Barack Obama supporters crowded into a Carlsbad pub to watch the Democratic candidate accept his party's nomination and kick off his historic presidential campaign.
Some spectators were lucky enough to get chairs, but for many there was standing room only at Hensley's Flying Elephant Pub & Grill on Tamarack Avenue, where the entire closing night of the Democratic National Convention in Denver was projected onto a big screen.
When Obama uttered the words "I accept your nomination," cheers from the crowd drowned out his voice.
Gabe Mendez, who organized the event for the grass-roots political group North Coast Citizens for Obama, said he picked up the banner for Obama during the primary elections.
"He is the embodiment of change," Mendez said of the Illinois senator. "I haven't done something like this since I was in my twenties."
Criticisms of the current Republican administration and Republican candidate John McCain drew some of the strongest applause from the crowd, as did promises to rein in troop deployment in the Middle East, to protect jobs in the United States, and to reduce taxes for working families.
Obama, the first black candidate to be nominated by a major party, acknowledged the work of politicians and activists that came before him, including Martin Luther King Jr.
That resonated with Charese Wolfe, also black, who said her late parents and grandmother missed witnessing the historic moment by just a few years.
"My dad had doubts about Barack. Not about the man, but about whether America would embrace him," Wolfe said. "They would be so proud right now."
Linda Joseph said she started out as a Hillary Clinton supporter, but switched allegiances after reading Obama's book, "The Audacity of Hope."
She said she was most moved by Obama's promise to bring troops home from the war in Iraq.
"The entire speech was uplifting," she said.
The only thing Wolfe said she would have changed was the closing music played after Obama's speech.
"I think the topping on the cake would have been Bruce Springsteen singing 'The Rising,'" she said.

We need an intellectual in the white house that has a backbone made of steel...this man embodies strength and wisdom...a powerful combination. Go OBAMA!!

To Bad wrote on Aug 29, 2008 8:09 AM:A lot of feel good crap and Bush bashing! I was hoping to hear specifics but in Obamas usual fashion spoke in generalities. Again no plans with specifics. Sorry, taxing the heck out of those that make over $250,000 isn't going to pay for all the give aways. Renwable energy is NOT going to get us off imported oil for years, not drilling is only delaying our independence. Oh yes, he talks change in Washington? His VP is one of the longest serving Senators who has done nothing of note. So it is just more of the same. I wanted to vote for Obama but I have to stay with experience.
To To Bad wrote on Aug 29, 2008 8:27 AM:I agree all I have heard is we are for change, ask them what change? They counter with we have a plan. What is the plan brings he response we are for change. Sounds like Peoplsi a few years back.
Cardiffian wrote on Aug 29, 2008 8:37 AM:Well, "To Bad", it appears your mind is already made up and nothing can change it. Hope you enjoyed the speech anyway. As for Sarah, maybe, maybe not. Personally, I can't understand why a woman would not be pro-choice - seems counter intuitive. She may be qualified, but it reeks of desperation that McCain feels he has to choose a woman for his VP. Since he has to crater to the evangelicals, maybe he thought her gender was a silver lining to an otherwise black cloud? I did find McCains spot last night congratulating Obama on his and our country's achievment in coming so far very classy. That's the McCain I used to know and admire. If only he would show more of that side of him, he might have a chance. I thought the speech was good, had plenty of substance, and we now know what he's going to run on. Good job all around. I understand that the GOP convention maybe postponed due to the storm. Do you think any of the right wing evangelicals will read any religious significance to it? Obama/Biden 08!

AmericanFemale wrote on Aug 29, 2008 10:23 AM:Sarah Palin, really? I agree with the above statement that this is desperate pandering to a voting block John McCain needs. Obama's choice, despite being an older, D.C., insider white dude, is at least strategic in a GENUINE way-he picked Biden because the team is a good compliment of skills, strengths and a blending of experience. I respect that, but what I DON'T respect is the INSULT to women EVERYWHERE that is McCain's choice of Sarah Palin. It's an insult, because we ladies know at least enough to look past her gender and see her for what she really is: inexperienced and terrible policy. Just because she doesn't look like Dick Cheney doesn't mean she's a good second in command-the country would go to hell in a handbasket with this woman in charge for more than a day. This is NOT about gender, that's why as a democrat, and a female, I voted for Obama. Please people-don't let the facade distract you from the real and incredible chance we have at turning this country around by electing Obama/Biden. Let's get these republican jokesters out of here once and for all before McCain changes his mind and selects a Beanie Baby for his running mate!

Obama will be 4 years of all talk no action.
Of all the billions of people in this country ... are these two really the best we can do? Very sad.
Old Timer wrote on Aug 29, 2008 10:52 AM:The Republicans are finally abandoning the insane politics of Bush/Cheney for a more compassionate style of government. Unfortunately, they should have ousted Bush/Cheney long before now and saved our country so much grief, death, debt, lies and embarrassment. I still blame the republicans for the mess this country is in and after eight years can not, in good conscious can not give them four more years. They had their chance and now we have pedophiles, corruption, public rest room homosexuality, lies, convictions, embarrassment. No more for them. McCain and Palin represent a needed change in the Republican party, but until all the old guard are gone (or imprisioned) No way - No how.
ObushMc wrote on Aug 29, 2008 11:08 AM:If these were normal times, I'd probably vote for McCain because he's a courageous and red-blooded American. But these are not normal times. Bush has been a complete screw-up for the last eight years. I don't buy the Democrats' line that McCain is some kind of Bush toady, but he's obviously going to be a lot more like Bush than McCain is. Republicans should've thought twice before nominating a stupid hick like Bush back in 2000. Be careful what you wish for...

Dr. K - Independent wrote on Aug 29, 2008 12:10 PM:Is anyone but me tired of hearing the only line the Republicans seem to have: "Obama doesn't have a plan . . . or Obama speaks in generalities . . . or 'What is the plan brings he response we are for change. Sounds like Peoplsi a few years back.'" I'm not sure what that last challenge means but it appears to be posted from a McCain supporter. Both candidates have offered plans of similar specificity, if not similar content. Set aside your biases long enough to listen with an open mind and an open heart to both sides, then vote your conscience. In the meantime, remember that everyone has an opinion but too few have an informed opinion.

To To To Bad wrote on Aug 29, 2008 1:33 PM:Yep they have a plan of change. Isn't that what was said when the Dems won back the House and Senate last election? We got change all right because of their typical inaction: Mortagage crisis, Mortagage bailout to irresponsible borrowers and lenders while those of us who are responsible pay for it. Higher unemployment, oil crisis ala Jimmy Carter days, Russia beating their war drums. I think we have had all the change we can handle. Where is a Reagan when you need him?

Greg in Oceanside wrote on Aug 30, 2008 5:22 PM:Obama is nothing but an orator, and his supporters are following him like lemmings. We can go on and on about 'why' you shouldn't vote for him but it'll take too much time and space. I do know I'm thoroughly sick of the bad-mouthing of America the Dems are good at, and how we need "change." I know I don't want any "change" Obama (and Biden) want to bring to our country. They want to turn the country into a welfare state. It's time for people to be accountable for themselves and not expect the government to do things for them.
McCain's pick for VP will push him over the top. I love the reaction from the Obama camp that claims Gov. Palin is too inexperienced. Hmmm, let's look at Obama's record and resume, shall we? No need, there's nothing to list or on his resume, and his greatest claim to fame (besides his Senatorial stint) was that he was a 'community organizer.' He hasn't even managed a convenience store, so what makes him think he can run a country?
Ok, let's look at Gov. Palin's; she was a mayor, is the governor of Alaska, and in charge of the AK National Guard. Sort of makes Obama look like a baboozler and a charlatan, doesn't it?
So, to all those who've been on the fence on which candidates are the best, are you ready to join us and support on the McCain/Palin? By the way, there a rally at the El Camino Country Club on Thursday 9/4, 6:00 PM, so come on over and join the team!
To Greg in Oceanside wrote on Sep 2, 2008 10:14 AM:I don't see how anyone can look at either of these candidates and think they're actually going to do anything they say.
McCain will be Bush continued ... NO THANKS!
Obama will be all talk with no substantial action ... Like we need more of that in Washington!
Palin was picked for one reason and one reason only ... The republican party wants to pull in as many of the disenfranchised Hillary supporters as possible and they're dumb enough to think putting a woman on the ticket will be enough.
Palin's experience is no better than Obama's ... just different. Unfortunately, we do have to consider whether or not Palin would make a good president considering McCain is about 102 with the health record of a 120 year old.
Once again, we are left with nothing more than the lesser of two evils. Which one is the lesser is a matter of opinion, but anyone who thinks either one of these candidates are actually going to bring anything new to the table (let alone run with it) is just plain kidding themselves.
Of course, I don't suppose it really matters anyway since it's the electors that determine the winner and not the voters.
Have fun at your party on Thursday. I've yet to see anything on either side worthy of my support.
